Start Your Engines. Yes start your engines! These words are spoken before each NASCAR race and as they say they are the most famous words in racing. In a way, they are very practical words. After all, if the race car drivers don’t start their engines they cannot race. In another way, they are instructional words. They let the drivers know that it is time to get ready to race. In a third way, they are inspirational words. That’s right, inspirational. Of course, these words are never spoken or heard in a vacuum. Much preparation, work, training, and energy are needed to be able and ready to start your engines. Without proper preparation attempting to start your engines would be futile. Even if the engines started, the race would probably be short-lived. I think of this motorsports phrase as I reflect on September at White Memorial. It is time to “Start Your Engines!” This month we will be “kicking off” many of our ministries as we re-engage in our fall programming, studies, and activities. To mention a few: • Choirs are back in rehearsals and are already providing worship leadership. • Sunday School classes for all ages begin meeting on September 9. • Youth Fellowship (PYC) kick-off is September 9. • The annual Generosity season (formerly called Stewardship), begins September 16. This year our guiding theme is “A Time to be Generous: Supporting the Life of the Church.” The scriptural basis is Galatians 5:13, “You were called to freedom, brothers and sister; only do not let this freedom be an opportunity to indulge your selfish impulses, but serve each other through love.” • The new Sounds on Oberlin concert series kicks off on September 23 • After months of planning and background work, this fall we will see progress on our building project. You can read about these and all of the upcoming activities in the September newsletter. In addition to reading this printed newsletter, be sure to read the WMPC Weekly and WMPC Weekend emails we send each Monday and Thursday mornings. Also, be sure to read the Summer/Fall edition of the WMPC Word which will arrive in your mailbox in early September. Throughout the summer many people have been planning, preparing, and working for these ministries. Now it is our time to Start Our Engines, so we might faithfully love and serve God and all of our neighbors. We look forward to sharing in ministry with you. Grace and Peace,

STEP INTO SOMETHING NEW

Are you interested in volunteering in a meaningful way, to make an impact on someone’s journey towards stability? If so, StepUp has just the opportunity for you!

NC READS INITIATIVE

Children at White Memorial are blessed to hear stories read aloud during Sunday School and at home. As a result, they are excited about reading and will be kindergartenready. Not every child is so fortunate, but we can empower parents with the knowledge that just reading to their child daily, starting at infancy, can help prepare children for kindergarten. If students are prepared for kindergarten, they are more likely to be successful throughout school and afterwards. During the week of September 24th, the White Memorial Weekday School, will be collecting new and gently used books to support the NC Reads initiative. Bins will be available for collection outside the Weekday School office and in The Connector. These books will be distributed to preschoolers and elementary students. As we look to increase the percentage of students reading on grade level, access to books at home from birth plays a key role.

StepUp Ministry is looking for Co-Partners for our Life Skills Program, where participants learn skills including budgeting, goal setting and relational development. The goal is stability in all aspects of life over the long term. Not sure if you’re ready to commit? Come see Life Skills in action on a Tuesday night. Please contact us at [email protected] or 919-781-0156 if you are interested in touring!

FOOD NEEDED

Remember that food is needed in our local pantries. When shopping, pick up a couple of extra cans to place in the crate in The Connector. Thank you for checking the expiration date before placing in the bin.
