Reformed Informer SEPTEMBER 2018 - FIRST REFORMED CHURCH, SULLY, IOWA

Pastor Wayne Sneller Email: [email protected]

Dear Friends, Recently my computer went down. As I worked to get my information back, many of the sights that I use on a regular basis asked for a password and a verification of my identity. I scrambled to find my original documentation so I could prove who I am and that I was a valid user. This process reminded me of the Bible verse from Matthew 10:32-33 that states, “Who ever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in Heaven.” Or in other words “But those who reject me publically, I will reject before my Father in Heaven.” (Good News Translation) These are pretty strong words of Jesus and He gets right to the point. If you know me and identify with Christ in our earthly journey, he will stand before God and claim us! As we begin another church education year, I am reminded of the importance of being students of the Word of God. It is not limited to our children but commands all of us to know Christ personally and leave no doubt in people’s minds to whom we belong. I urge our church to improve our knowledge of God and to get into His word. How can we do this? Attend our worship services. Be serious about worshipping together and feeding on Christ’s word. Invite a friend to church and be a guide in the wonderful relationship we can have in Christ. Be a student of the Bible. Study God’s word! May your Bible be used at home and opened before your children. May it be used more than the remote on your TV! Or at least as automatically. As parents, send your children to church education opportunities. May Sunday School be a regular part of your week. Encourage your youth to be part of our church youth groups. We have great leaders and sponsors that will help develop your child’s spiritual journey. In other words, take time to acknowledge Christ before others! Take seriously the command to be a student of the Word. The benefits go beyond this world and prepare us for a heavenly reception! The password is Jesus is Lord! In Christ, Pastor Wayne

Arie & Elaine Scholten Birthdays: February 17-Arie September 22-Elaine Anniversary: April 26, 1968 The opportunities and outreach to the children and youth of the community, the friendliness of everyone in the congregation, Pastor Wayne’s messages as well as being a witness to the baptisms of their 5 grandchildren are more of what Arie & Elaine Scholten cherish about First Reformed Church. Arie Scholten grew up around the Pella and Sully areas with his parents Bill (deceased) and Cora Scholten. Yvonne Osmond (Johnston), Shirley Van Genderen (Sully) Willie (deceased) and Mark (Lynnville) are his siblings. He attended and graduated from Lynnville-Sully School where he met Elaine Renaud. Gladys & James Renaud (both deceased) are Elaine’s parents and she was raised on a farm by Searsboro with her brothers Marvin (Grinnell), LaVerne (deceased), Keith (Lynnville) and Dennis (Lynnville). The Scholten’s have three children; Shawna (Doug Maasdam); Eric; and Suzanne (Josh Rozendaal) and they have 5 grandchildren; Brett and Kaylee Maasdam and Corrina, Jordyn and Gabe Rozendaal. Arie and Elaine are both retired so in their spare time they take delight in sharing a meal with friends at a cabin they own. Elaine loves to sew, garden and spend time with the grandchildren. Being outside on their farm, is a hobby Arie finds enjoyable. Thanks Arie & Elaine for letting us “Get to Know You Better!”

Chad & Dara Vanden Bosch Email: [email protected] Web: www.rca.org/vandenbosch The Need Mozambique continues to be one of the poorest countries in the world; most parts of the country lack health care facilities and decent schools. While the church in Mozambique is growing, illiteracy hampers access to God’s Word and personal spiritual growth. Chad and Dara’s Ministry The Vanden Bosches serve in partnership with Audio Scripture Ministries, recording and distributing the Bible in audio form so that those in Mozambique who cannot read can still hear God’s Word. Chad and Dara also run a compassionate care ministry, bringing hospice or palliative care to those with incurable diseases. They train Mozambicans to make home visits to bring physical relief, counseling, and spiritual encouragement, showing God’s love and compassion so that no one needs to die alone. MOZAMBIQUE P Prayer requests: Praise the Lord for the opening of the new recording studio in central Mozambique. Pray that this studio will be a blessing to many in the region who are still waiting to hear God speak their own language. Pray for the safe arrival of the 2080 audio Bibles that have been purchased. Pray for the team in Mozambique as they make the hard decisions as to where the new audio Bibles will be distributed. Pray also for the team as they work on the logistics of how to distribute the audio Bibles. Pray for new patients to be brought to the Compassionate Care team. Pray for continued strength as we continue to do ministry and homeschool at the same time. Continue to pray with us for a finalized adoption and the freedom that will come with that.
