This Week at First Presbyterian

Music in This Morning’s Worship Service I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the understanding also. (I Corinthians 14:15)

This Morning’s Hymns: Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise was written by W. Chalmers Smith. It is based on I Timothy 1:17. To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only wise God be honor and glory for ever and ever. It is essentially a hymn of praise to God as creator of the universe: The invisible God whose works in nature proclaim divine glory and majesty, God’s goodness and love. Special emphasis is given to light. God is said to dwell “in light inaccessible.” God works “silent as light,” and in the final stanza “rulest in light,” – a light before which the angels veil their faces. Sometimes our failure to perceive God’s presence is not due to the lack of divine illumination but rather the overpowering brilliance of it: “’Tis only the splendor of the light hideth thee.”

Christian Women, Christian Men was written in 1985 by Dorothy Diemer Hendry. Like Abraham’s response to the rich man in today’s gospel lesson, its direct, unvarnished questioning of our care for the needy is unrelenting and unwavering. We confess that we do hear the cries of the homeless, the hungry, the aged and ill. Thankfully, we may still respond as God’s agents of love and grace. God will give us the resources with which to care for those in need, indeed, to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. The musical setting for this text was provided by Emma Lou Diemer, Ms. Hendry’s sister and a famous organist and composer.

Lord, Whose Life Through Humble Service was written by Albert F. Bayly in response to a Hymn Society of America search for new hymns that addressed social welfare from a Christian perspective. Bayly’s text begins with a recognition of Christ’s ultimate sacrifice on the cross and then points to the continuing needs of the homeless, the hungry, the prisoners, those who mourn, the sick and the aged. Bayly reminds us that Jesus’ ministry is the model for ministry to both the physical and spiritual needs of people.

Today’s Anthem A Short, Festival Te Deum Text: Ascribed to Saints Ambrose Music: Gustav Holst and Augustine, on the occasion of the latter's baptism by the former in AD 387. The Te Deum is a creedal hymn that offers a substantial summary of the Christian faith. A brief paraphrase of four sections of the Te Deum may be found as Hymn # 460: Holy God, We Praise Your Name.

Please Welcome the String Quintet This morning’s music features the addition of a string quintet. Please welcome these players to our service: Violin I: Priscilla Johnson Violin II: Lucia Santizo Kern Viola: Scott Stefanko Cello: Judith Vander Weg Bass: Derrick Tietz

The torment of the dead is that they cannot warn the living, just as it is the torment of the mature that the erring young will not listen to them.

Call to Confession and Corporate Prayer of Confession Steve Baillie God of justice and righteousness, you lift up the lowly and fill the empty, yet we adore the high and the mighty. You reach out to the poor, yet we ceaselessly pursue wealth. You talk about treasure in heaven, yet we want dollars in our accounts right now. Forgive our lack of generosity. Heal our misguided ways. Cleanse us from the assumption that all that matters is what we have and what we can get. Change our hearts so that we can tend to the things that matter, and find our life in Jesus Christ. Amen. *Affirmation of Faith: The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *Passing of the Peace of God (You may extend the hand of peace or cross your chest as a sign of blessing.) *Offertory Sentence
