SERMON APPLICATION GUIDE JOHN 1:1-5 DISCUSSION 1: JESUS, THE WORD 1. What are some things meant when John refers to Jesus as “the Word”? 2. People often wonder what God is like or settle for vague, or incorrect, notions of God. How can we look at Jesus—through the Bible—to better understand who God is and what He’s like? 3. How can you get the most out of our study of John, individually and as a group?

DISCUSSION 2: JESUS, THE LIFE 1. In what ways does John 1:1-5 exalt Jesus? How, specifically, do these verses enrich your view of him? Why is this important? 2. If all things were made through Jesus and all things were made both to point to him and glorify him (see also Col. 1:15-17), how might this affect the way we view and relate to his Creation? What are wrong ways to view and relate to Creation? 3. The theme that Jesus is life and gives life (1:4), runs throughout John and points the reader to finding full life now and eternal life forever in Jesus. What are you walking through this week where you need to find endurance, strength, fulfillment, and life in Jesus?

DISCUSSION 3: JESUS, THE LIGHT 1. How does life with Jesus lead us into light? Conversely, how might walking in darkness keep us from walking with Christ? 2. What are one or two ways this week you can better walk in the life and light Jesus gives? What might be some effects of doing so? 3. Why is the promise of verse 5 good news for us today? When might you need to remember it?

FAMILY DISCIPLESHIP QUESTIONS 1. What are ways you reflect, look like, or act like your parents or grandparents? What are ways Jesus reflects God the Father? 2. How do we know Jesus is God? How do we know he’s Man? Why are both essential?

3. Have your children take a flashlight and go into a dark room as a family. Talk about darkness, and then ask your children to turn on the flashlight. Let them take turns trying to push the light beams away. Afterward, discuss the power of light versus the power of darkness. Then ask how Jesus is the light of the world and how he has overcome darkness?

APPLICATION •

Individual: Start a journal (printed or electronic) for the gospel of John. Use this to record key observations, things God encourages you with or convicts you about, prayer requests, promises of God, takeaways, etc. Note where in John you see the divinity of Jesus and where you see his humanity. For example, John 4:6 shows the humanity of Jesus through his weariness, and John 4:14-16 shows his divinity in his ability to give eternal life and his knowledge of all things.

Group: Consider memorizing all or parts of John 1:1-18 together. Use memorization to practice meditating on God’s Word each week.

Group: As we begin The Gospel of John, we want to remain desperate for God to work in us individually and together. Spend time discussing where you need God to be at work in your heart, and then pray for one another. Brainstorm ways to better stay connected during the week to pray for and encourage one another in your pursuit of Christ.
