SERMON NOTES

MESSAGE SERIES: Special Message Sermon Text: Matthew 9:9-13

Guest Speaker Pastor Bert Jones Grace Evangelical Church October 28, 2018

Three things we frequently forget in the church: 1. That being lost was once part of our own testimony. 2. How much lost people really matter to Jesus.

3. How messy it can be when you are ministering to lost people. “The lost art of reaching the Lost” 1. Jesus saw spiritual potential in every person. (vs 9) 2. Jesus took the time to invest & have meaningful & significant relationships with many sinners. (vs 10-11) 3. Jesus focused His attention where the needs were the greatest. (vs 12) 4. Jesus showed those in need, true love, mercy and compassion. (vs 13a) 5. Jesus went further to call them to forgiveness. (vs 13b)

=================================================== We begin the 8th week of G3s. We are half way through! We hope that you will continue to make meeting a priority. The church has a few other worthwhile events to mark on your calendar: Roller-Rama (10/31) St. Joe Serve (11/4) 2nd Harvest Packing Thanksgiving Boxes (11/10) G3 Leader’s & Facilitator’s meeting (11/10) =================================================== GETTING TO KNOW YOU * Pastor Bert spoke of his last time flying. What notable experiences have you had either on a plane or another mode of transportation? * Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything you heard for the first time or that caught your attention, challenged or confused you?

DIGGING DEEPER - Read Luke 5:27-32 1. Have you ever had a time where you were really lost or had lost something valuable, what emotions did you experience?

2. How did Matthew respond when Jesus said, “Follow me”? What kind of religious/social walls did Jesus break down with that invite?

5. As a group read the following verses and list the things God desires from us: 1 Samuel 15:22 – Proverbs 21:3 – Micah 6:8 – Hosea 6:6 –

6. Why is mercy and compassion such important things to God? How is it important in our community today?

TAKING IT HOME – Think about this - who would have reached out to Matthew, or others like Zacchaeus or the woman at the well had it not been for Jesus? For the next week pray and consider this challenge: Who does Jesus Christ want you to reach out to on His behalf? How can you connect with them in order to introduce them to Jesus?

PRAYER REQUESTS (be sure to save 15-30 minutes for prayer) > >

3. In our community, what groups would you say the Church equates to these “tax collectors and sinners”? How do you think people from your social circles would react if you had a big supper with one of the groups you listed? (Do you post the photos on social media?)

4. Pastor Bert mentioned the Church in general acting like a health club more than an emergency room. Is this a fair statement? Why or why not? At Grace what would you change or have us keep doing to follow the example Christ set with Matthew?

(IF MEETING AT A HOME, PLEASE DO NOT OVERSTAY YOUR WELCOME, YOUR HOST IS TOO NICE TOO INVITE YOU TO LEAVE) =================================================== SERVICE PROJECT SPOTLIGHT – Pivotal Point provides Life Skill classes for their residents on Tuesdays from 6:30-7:30pm.
