SermonDISCUSSION Outline GUIDE Prodigal Righteousness Meets Prodigal FEBRUARY 6TH, Grace 2011 Jesus Comes Home Luke 15:25-32 LUKE 19:45-20:8 September 19th, 2010 Icebreaker: What are your initial thoughts and feelings when you think about Jesus entering the temple to drive people out? (shock, anger, support, confusion, disagreement, etc.) Introduction: This passage is the convergence of several realities that are important for us to understand. First, it is the climax of a journey begun in Luke 9:51 when ―Jesus set his face to Jerusalem.‖ Second, Jerusalem is truly the ‗royal city‘—the political, cultural, religious center of Israel—and the place filled with anticipation of the ‗Messiah‘s‘ coming reign. Third, the Passover is at hand, commemorating the deliverance of the Jews from Egyptian bondage and pointing to God‘s saving power over his people. In this context, Jesus enters the temple… Explanation and Application: Jesus Smashes and Judges Idolatry (19:45-48) 1. What is idolatry? Read Isaiah 42:8 and Jeremiah 2:13 for help. 2. Tim Keller equates sin with idolatry this way: ―Sin isn‘t only doing bad things; it is more fundamentally making good things into ultimate things. Sin is building your life and meaning on anything, even a very good thing, more than on God. Whatever we build our life on will drive us and enslave us. Sin is primarily idolatry.‖ How can a good thing become an ultimate thing? Give examples. 3. Sin has both Godward and manward consequences. What were the Godward consequences of the Jews as Jesus entered the temple? What were the manward consequences? 4. Jesus was zealous for 3 things:  Worship: The holiness and glory of God‘s House – God‘s Name  Dignity: The honor and dignity of People  Salvation: The saving grace coming to the Gentiles…the LOST! In what ways do you lack zeal for these 3 areas? How can you ask the Lord to grow your zeal for Him, for all people, and specifically for the lost?

Jesus Confronts the Jewish Leaders (20:1-8) 1. The Jewish leaders cherished their idols of self-love, greed, power/authority/control, reputation, and fear of man and sought to maintain these idols by dishonoring God and denigrating people. How did Jesus‘ question about John the Baptist help identify the idols of their hearts? 2. Mark Driscoll said: ―Those who idolize must also demonize! Those who find their identity and worth in an idol must also demonize the things, people, or truths that contradict or compete with that idol.‖ In what ways did the Jewish leaders demonize? 3. What are the idols that compete with God for your affections? In what ways do you demonize when your idol worship is threatened? 4. Jesus came to confront, condemn, and CURE our idolatry. In light of your idolatry, how will you look to the cross of Jesus Christ for forgiveness, cleansing, and restoration today?
