SERMON PREP GUIDE OCTOBER 21, 2018 READING GOD’S WORD John 13:1-20

DISCUSSING GOD’S WORD 1. What is the context for this passage? What is taking place at that time of the year? 2. Who is planning to betray Jesus? Who does John list as being responsible for this plan? 3. What act of service does this passage record Jesus doing? 4. Whose feet does He wash and what is His reason for doing so? 5. How does Jesus’ dialogue with Simon Peter unfold? 6. What does Jesus predict will happen? Which Scripture is it that must be fulfilled?

APPLYING GOD’S WORD 1. What does the opening verse of our passage teach you about Jesus’ love and humility? Are you loving others like Him? 2. Jesus displays great trust in the perfect will of the Father in verse 3. Re-read it and discuss the characteristics of God that it brings to mind. Take time to praise Him as a group. 3. How do you make sense of Jesus’ reasoning that washing one’s feet makes a person clean (think specifically in their culture)? What does it mean to be “clean?” 4. Jesus clearly lays out that He is giving the disciples an example to follow (v. 14-17). How can our community on mission be obedient to follow His example?

PRAYING THE WORD » Thank You for your faithful, devoted, and sacrificial love for us. » We recognize that You have been given all authority on heaven and earth and nothing happens apart from the perfect will of the Father. » We earnestly pray for those that do not know Your love. » Help us to not only find ways to serve others but to actually be obedient in doing so as You have done.
