SERMON PREP GUIDE OCTOBER 28, 2018 READING GOD’S WORD Matthew 28:16-20

DISCUSSING GOD’S WORD 1. What major events precede our passage this week? Why were the eleven disciples traveling to Galilee? 2. What were the two recorded responses of the disciples upon seeing Jesus? 3. What does Jesus claim in verse 18? Why is this significant for the commission He is about to give the disciples? 4. Jesus’ imperative, or command, is to make disciples of all nations (v. 19). What are the participles in this passage that further describe what is involved in making disciples? 5. What are Jesus’ parting words to the disciples in verse 20? Why is this significant in light of what will soon happen –His ascension to the Father?

APPLYING GOD’S WORD

1. Imagine, for a moment, the anticipation and faith of the disciples when they obediently traveled from Jerusalem to meet with Jesus on the mountain in Galilee. They were literally taking steps of faith as they put one foot in front of the other. How is the Lord directing you to step out in faith to be obedient to Him? 2. In Matthew, verse 17 is the first recorded meeting of Jesus with His disciples after the resurrection. It is a verse that records, honestly, the frailty of man – “they worshiped, but some doubted.” What are a few ways that this honesty encourages you? 3. How will your community be obedient to Jesus’ imperative of making disciples of all nations? Where does this mean you will go? 4. Jesus gives a clear command that His disciples should baptize. Why do you think baptism was so important to Jesus and so important?

PRAYING THE WORD

» We praise You for Your faithfulness and the fulfillment of Your Word. All of Scripture points to Your redemptive plan in Christ Jesus. » Thank You for Your graciousness and patience towards us who believe, even when we fail to trust or understand. » May Christ be worshiped by every nation, language, tribe, and tongue - for He is the Lamb of God who was slain for the sins of the world. May our lives be lived for His glory and His Name. » Give us the resolve to be faithful to Christ’s command to make disciples of all nations.
