SERMON PREP GUIDE NOVEMBER 4, 2018 READING GOD’S WORD Habakkuk 1:1-11

DISCUSSING GOD’S WORD 1. What does verse one tell us about the book of Habakkuk? 2. How does Habakkuk address God in verse two? What does this tell you about the relationship between God and the prophet? 3. Verses two through four encompass Habakkuk’s first formal complaint to God. How would you summarize what he is saying? 4. Likewise, how would you summarize God’s response to Habakkuk in v. 5-11? 5. Who are the Chaldeans? How does God describe them in these verses?

APPLYING GOD’S WORD 1. Habakkuk lays his complaint before God in the initial verses of this book. When we pray is it ever right for us to question God or make complaints before Him? 2. Like Habakkuk, has there been a time in your life that you have waited for the Lord to act? Take some time to share of God’s faithfulness despite the difficulty of waiting. Who can you share this with in your family, neighborhood, or workplace? 3. God worked in a way that Habakkuk did not expect. In fact, He says in verse five “that you would not believe if told.” How can you encourage one another to trust in His ways? [Read Isaiah 55:8-11] 4. The Chaldeans worshiped their own strength (v. 11). Is there a time that you can remember when you relied on your own strength and trusted in the yourself rather than God? How’d that turn out?

PRAYING THE WORD » Thank you, Father, for hearing our cries and listening to our pleas.Grant us the courage to trust You to act in Your perfect timing. » Forgive us, God, when we doubt Your ways and the work of Your hands. » Help us persevere through injustice as we wait upon You and not rely on the strength of man. » We praise You for You are a just God and You will establish justice and righteousness on the earth.
