Sermon Questions 2 Samuel 24 “Costly Worship” 1. What stood out to you from this week’s sermon? 2. Read 2 Samuel 24:1-3. David counts the men in his army so that he can be reassured that everything is going to be okay. However, David forgets the truth he affirmed in Psalm 33:16, which says the size of the army does not matter. Even though David is a man after God’s own heart, he struggles in this instance. How does David’s struggle with selfreliance bring us comfort when we struggle with our own sins? How do we see God’s goodness and grace show up in both David’s life and in our lives? 3. In 2 Samuel 24:10, David realizes that he sinned against the Lord and confesses his foolishness to Him. What is our first reaction when we recognize that we have sinned— do we freely confess it to the Lord or do we conceal it from Him? How does our reaction to our sin affect our relationship with God? 4. Read 2 Samuel 24:24. The key idea in this verse is that David says, “I will not offer to the Lord something that costs me nothing.” Pastor Jim said the person who worships the Lord with an undivided heart realizes that to truly worship God it will cost each of us something. Discuss a time that worshipping God actually cost you something. 5. Pastor Jim shared with us that the land which David bought from Araunah became the place where God’s temple was to be built. As David sacrificed to build an altar on this land, so too God sacrificed for us by sending Jesus to the top of a mountain. Take some time to discuss the significance of David’s purchase of Araunah’s threshing floor and what it meant for the nation of Israel. 6. God provided the ultimate sacrifice for us, showing mercy to us, in the form of Jesus. Read Luke 23:44-48 together. Take a moment to reflect on the immensity of the sacrifice taking place here. As great as our personal sacrifices may be, God made the ultimate sacrifice in sending His Son Jesus to die for us. How does the knowledge of this change the way that we live and worship? 7. As a group, pray together that God will give you undivided hearts that love Him. Pray that you will be willing to sacrifice in order to worship Him fully. Praise God for the incredible love and mercy that He has shown through the cross and the blood of Jesus to redeem and restore us. Thank Him for His unfailing, unwavering, unending faithfulness.
