Precautions and Safety • Read and fully understand ALL manufacturers’ instructions before beginning. Failure to follow proper installation instructions may result in the denial of warranty claims for operational or performance problems. • Do not work alone. Two or more people are required. Use safe lifting techniques. • Use caution when handling glass. Broken or cracked glass can cause serious injury. • Wear protective gear (e.g. safety glasses, gloves, ear protection, etc.). • Operate hand/power tools following manufacturer’s safety operating instructions.

• Use caution when working at elevated heights. • If disturbing existing paint, take proper precautions if lead paint is suspected (commonly used before 1979). Your regional EPA (www.epa.gov/lead) or Consumer Product Safety Commission offices provide information regarding regulations and lead protection. • WARNING: Drilling, sawing, sanding or machining wood products generates wood dust, a substance known to the State of California to cause cancer. Use a respirator or other safeguards to avoid inhaling wood dust.

SERVICE SUPPLEMENT FOR VINYL WINDOWS for Window Shimming (SVC013)

PROPER SHIMMING Shimming of JELD-WEN windows requires a sufficient number of shims to maintain the proper operation of the window as designed. These shimming instructions must be followed to provide proper support to eliminate sagging, bowing or any deflection that may inhibit the proper operation and overall performance of the window; shims should remain after installation of the window is complete. In regions of the country where ambient air temperatures reach or exceed 95°F (35°C), shim at 8" on center (OC) to maintain proper sill alignment in these temperature zones*. IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not over shim as this can cause distortion of the frame. • It is recommended the installer does not place the window directly on the rough opening (RO) sill. Place shims on the RO sill as needed to level the window and prevent sagging or bowing. Fig. 1 & 1a • Position the window onto the shims positioned on the RO sill; verify the window manufacturer’s tolerances for square, plumb and level. • Shim each jamb as needed; jamb requires a maximum 1/4" space per side, to allow proper shimming to hold the window plumb and level through installation. Fig. 2 NOTE: Shim jambs as necessary to keep jamb straight and plumb with a 1/4" space for interior air seal. • Casement windows require shims at each hinge location in addition to the locking location (jamb). Fig. 3 • Horizontal sliding windows and mulled window units also require shims be placed on each side of the meeting (check) rail and mull joints. Fig. 4 • Follow the fastening schedule for the fastener placement in the window. Place a shim at every fastener location to insure proper support. Fig. 5 & 5a NOTE: Products shall not be racked more than 1/8" out of square for dimensions up to 4' or more than 3/16" for dimensions greater than 4' for a diagonal measurement tolerance of 1/8" up to 20 ft2 and 1/4" over 20 ft2 (In reference to ASTM E 2112-07).
