First ever snakehead fish found in Middle River This roughly 30-inch long snakehead was found “freshly” dead and floating in Sue Creek off of Middle River. It is the first confirmed presence of the invasive species in the Middle River system.

- by Devin Crum Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) officials verified that a roughly 30-inch snakehead fish found in Sue Creek is the first ever confirmed instance of the invasive species in Middle River. The person who found the fish on Thursday, Oct. 29, noted that it was already dead when he first saw it, but that it had probably not been dead more than a day. He could not attest to what had killed the fish, but he noted it was still bleeding when he found it. “I knew it was a snakehead pretty much the second I saw it,” said the man, who asked not to be named. But he fished it

out of the water with a net to be sure, and he admitted that it was the first time he had seen one in person. The man promptly reported his find to the United States Geological Survey which logged it. DNR spokesperson Kristen Peterson at first surmised that the find was of no real significance because snakeheads have been known to be in the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers for over a decade. But after checking the state’s records she discovered that this was the first confirmed case in Middle River. “So it is unique,” she said. Joe Love, a biologist with DNR’s Fisheries Service, noted that snakeheads have

been found recently in the upper bay after having spread to the Patuxent, Naticoke, Wicomico and Blackwater Rivers, and were found in two Eastern Shore ponds in April of this year. Therefore, “It’s not a surprise, necessarily, that it was found in Middle River. But it is the first one confirmed,” Love explained. He added, though, that no snakeheads have yet been confirmed in the Gunpowder River or other northeastern Bay tributaries. Northern snakeheads, native to China, breed rapidly and prey on native fish here. In abundance, they can upset the - see SNAKEHEAD on page 5 -

IKEA kicks off annual Soft Toys for Education campaign

- by Emily Blackner On Tuesday, Nov. 3, IKEA White Marsh officially kicked off its 2015 Soft Toys for Education campaign. This annual fundraiser allows customers to purchase soft toys, with a portion

of the proceeds donated to children’s education programs around the world. The physical toys themselves can be donated as well; these will be given to local child welfare organizations. “It’s always such a great cause,”

The staff of IKEA White Marsh and representatives from Johns Hopkins Bayview, Kennedy Kreiger and Baltimore County Schools Office of Homeless Education joined together to kick off the retailer’s annual Soft Toys for Education campaign on Nov. 3.

said Bill Meiswinkel, local marketing and PR manager for the White Marsh IKEA. “Our coworkers get very excited about it and come up with lots of creative ways to increase support.” The company-wide Soft Toys for Education campaign raises money for UNICEF and Save the Children education programs, helping kids around the world learn. For each soft toy purchased between Nov. 1 and Dec. 26, IKEA will donate $1.11 (equal to one euro, the currency of the European Union, of which Sweden, IKEA’s home country, is a part). Additionally, each store sets up donation bins past the cash lanes to allow customers to drop their soft toys for

Kamenetz delivers transportation priorities to state Secretary Rahn

One east side priority noticeably absent from list

- by Devin Crum On Thursday, Oct. 29, Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz presented his priorities for county transportation projects to receive state funding to Pete Rahn, secretary of the Maryland Department of Transportation. The exchange happened during Rahn’s visit to Baltimore County as part of MDOT’s annual Consolidated Transportation Program (CTP) tour. In a letter to Secretary Rahn, Kamenetz outlined all of the transportation projects for which he would like state consideration - many of which are on the east side - while stressing that the Baltimore metropolitan region is now

the fifth most congested in the country and the inhibiting effect that is having on the growth of the local economy. “Researchers indicate that traffic congestion will only get worse in the next 20 years,” the letter states. “We need a comprehensive transit system that will support our local economy and accommodate future growth in a safe and reliable manner.” Kamenetz also points out that each state dollar invested in the Baltimore region will reach more than 25 percent of the state’s population. The county executive pointed to four significant east side projects to improve the county’s transportation infrastructure, the most major of which was, of course, Sparrows Point.

He said that while the redevelopment project at Sparrows Point enjoys such assets as 3,100 acres of industrially-zoned land, as well as access to a deep water port channel, two interstate highways and two rail lines, “the state needs to invest in certain infrastructure improvements to facilitate implementation of the plan,” which will result in generation of new jobs for the region. Specifically, Kamenetz asks for the construction of a full interchange at I-695 and Exit 44 (Broening Highway) to help maximize potential redevelopment activities. This would allow for truck avoidance of the toll plaza and would reduce truck traffic that impacts residential communities on Dundalk and Holabird Avenues, he explained.

Additionally, several bridges serving the property are in disrepair and are in danger of closure which could adversely affect the Sparrows Point redevelopment. Kamenetz points to the MD-151/North Point Boulevard bridge over Wharf Road and Industrial Railroad, the MD-157/ Peninsula Expressway bridge over ramps to I-695, the Wharf Road ramp bridge over Wharf Road and the Wharf Road bridge over Baltimore Industrial Railroad as bridges in need of rehabilitation and proper maintenance. Kamenetz also asked for the creation of a signalized intersection from Sollers Point Road and Main Street at Broening Highway to enhance road access and reduce traffic congestion as increased - see PRIORITIES on page 6 -

SNAKEHEAD

NEWS

- continued from page 1 local ecological balance. The species was first discovered in the Chesapeake Bay watershed in 2002 in a Crofton pond. In that instance, the state had success treating the pond to kill the snakeheads. But it would not be realistic to use that technique in the entire Bay watershed, Love said, and there are no state programs to eradicate the fish. Instead, DNR’s efforts are aimed more at learning how snakeheads interact with other animals in the environment and trying to anticipate and brace for any potential impacts, Love explained. However, the department is looking

into electrofishing in conjunction with recreational and commercial fishing, which he said have helped to reduce their biomass in recent years. DNR encourages anglers to kill and “harvest” any snakeheads they catch, rather than releasing them, and to report any catches in Maryland outside of the tidal Potomac River to fishingreport.dnr@ maryland.gov or 410-260-8325. Love noted that the state is acknowledging those reports and has incentives in place to encourage people to catch and kill them through legal methods. “But the public seems willing to euthanize them” either for food or for the good of the ecosystem, he said.

To learn more about the incentives, visit DNR’s website at http://dnr2. maryland.gov. While snakeheads may not look appetizing, they are a popular food fish in Asia and are delicious, Love commented, which is something to consider if you catch one. Some restaurants in the area even list snakehead on their menus, such as the Alewife restaurant in Baltimore. There is also a YouTube video on the state website which shows people how to prepare the

fish for eating while reminding them that it is against state law to possess them alive. The penalty for possessing a live snakehead or introducing one into Maryland waters can reach $25,000 and 30 days in jail. Transporting invasive fish across state lines without a federal permit is a Lacey Act violation, and the penalty can reach $250,000 and up to five years in jail. Because snakeheads are an invasive species, they may be caught year round and there is no catch limit for them.

PRIORITIES

- continued from page 4 redevelopment activities take place at the port and Sparrows Point. Other projects listed as priorities in Kamenetz’s letter included widening and raising of MD-7/Philadelphia Road between Campbell Boulevard and Mohrs Lane in Nottingham, completion of sidewalks along Kenwood Avenue from Lillian Holt Road to Hazelwood Avenue in Rosedale, and upgrading the MD-150/Eastern Boulevard streetscape in downtown Essex, which is one of the oldest in the county. Kamenetz states the MD-7 improvements would increase traffic capacity and safety in the area, as well as enhance Pulaski Highway as a location for new employment-related development. The sidewalks along Kenwood Avenue would increase

pedestrian safety for Overlea High School. And the “downtrodden” look of the downtown Essex public realm makes it difficult to encourage private reinvestment for improvements in buildings, the letter states. However, noticeably missing from the county executive’s list was the relocation of the Middle River MARC train station on Eastern Boulevard to the other side of MD-43. Essex and Middle River communities have advocated for this move for several years so that the station can become a part of the eventual redevelopment of the Middle River Depot property in a transit-oriented development. Former Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith and MDOT at one time both supported the move, with the state conducting a feasibility study that recommended it to move forward. But when Smith was appointed MDOT secretary in 2013, he quashed the project.

nTy E w T TEEn FiF

Bob Bendler, president of the Essex-Middle River Civic Council (EMRCC), said he believes the project has more life now than it did two years ago with so much development and redevelopment happening in the area, and with Smith no longer in the picture it should be a priority to move forward. According to Ellen Kobler, spokesperson for the county executive, the MARC station relocation was included in Kamenetz’s presentations to the County Council and to Secretary Rahn, however. “The county executive made it very clear that that project remains a priority,” Kobler stated, adding that he stressed that to Rahn as well as County Council Chair Cathy Bevins, who represents the area. Kobler also stated that the letter described predominantly new projects, and the MARC station project would be included in the full transportation package submitted for state consideration. Bendler expressed relief that Kamenetz still supports the project and sees it as a priority for the east side. “I’ve been advised that the county will be following up with the state on this priority,” he said. “I’m encouraged that it will find its way back onto the table. “It’s obvious from looking at the current [MARC] station that it is at capacity. It can’t grow,” Bendler commented. “People go there and can’t find a parking spot and they don’t come back. So you don’t know how many riders you’ve lost.” He added that the accommodations at the station are lacking and a place is needed for riders to relax and enjoy the experience. Another hoped-for move to the area is Amtrak, which indicated in its 2010 northeast corridor infrastructure statement that a relocated MARC station would be desirable for their eventual location to the site. That statement also said the relocated station would be central to a vast amount of transit-oriented development and other redevelopment projects occurring in the area. Bendler agreed, pointing to Lockheed Martin’s cleanup and redevelopment efforts, the redevelopment of the Middle River Depot site, the planned redevelopment of the property owned by Len Weinberg adjacent to the Depot and the commercial and residential development occurring along MD-43 as prime examples.

- continued from page 2 used the toys in its mobile vaccination vans, for hospitalized patients throughout the year and even for some of its geriatric patients. Meiswinkel said that the layout of those donation bins has been changed this year. “We wanted to try to do something a little different. It’s a little more festive-looking,” he explained. Another exciting, new aspect of the program is the special line of 10 limited-edition Sagoskatt soft toys which were designed by children around the world. Last winter, IKEA solicited drawings from children worldwide, choosing 10 to be made into soft toys sold exclusively in IKEA this Christmas season. The winners were chosen based on what judges thought children would most want to cuddle; these include a chubby unicorn, a dinosaur with a pirate hat, a sixarmed monster and more. “The same program is being opened up in the US,” Meiswinkel said. “Next year, some of those US toys could be winners.” One winner will be selected from each of the 41 US stores, along with the stores worldwide, and the judges will choose next year’s line from among those winners. Submissions are accepted from Oct. 30 Nov. 15 online at http://www.ikea.com/ms/en_GB/ good-cause-campaign/soft-toys-for-education/kidsdesign-for-good-cause/index.html# or by dropping the drawing off at the returns desk in the IKEA store. Last year, the store donated $2,791 worth of toys, and this year Meiswinkel said he’d “love to see that up in $3,500 range.” Company-wide, IKEA has donated 77 million euros to UNICEF since 2003, impacting 11 million children. “In the US, this Baltimore store has [consistently] been in the top five stores in terms of percentage to volume,” Meiswinkel revealed. “That’s really a testament to our customer base.”

Darrius Sample, Dundalk Owls prove they are for real

- by Patrick Taylor There is an old saying that liars figure, but figures never lie. It is a tired cliche, one that doesn’t hold up under scrutiny. Numbers can be manipulated to fit any agenda. And when looking solely at team records, it can be pretty easy to buy into undeserved hype. I was worried that might be the case with the Dundalk Owls, who entered Friday night’s matchup with the Perry Hall Gators with an undefeated 8 - 0 record, but was proven wrong after the Owls clinically picked apart their opponent. I have seen a slew of Dundalk games up to this point and knew they had high-quality players. As a team they pass the eye test with flying colors. But in watching those games it became apparent that the quality of their opponents was lackluster at best. So the Owls sat at 8 - 0, but they hadn’t really played a quality opponent, with the exception being Catonsville, who are a solid team but nothing special. But you can’t fault a team for the schedule they face. And the Owls built up a massive amount of momentum leading up to their Friday night matchup with Perry Hall. Both teams needed a win - Dundalk to prove their quality, Perry Hall to work their way into the playoff picture. But both teams don’t have Darrius Sample, who has proven that he is an absolute stud. Sample is the perfect high school quarterback. His athleticism, high football I.Q. and ability to turn trash into treasure make him invaluable, and all of that was on display

Friday night as he led the Owls to victory, carrying the team on his back to the tune of an eight touchdown performance. Eight! Sample was sublime from the very beginning, scrambling and passing all over the place. His first touchdown of the night was a thing of beauty, finding RJ Nicholson on a hot route in the back of the endzone from about 25 yards out. He followed that with multiple rushing touchdowns and Dundalk was sitting on what looked like an insurmountable lead. But the Gators are a strong team with plenty of offensive firepower, and after some initial hiccups they got into a groove and managed to storm back on the Owls. All season long Dundalk’s defense has looked rock

SPORTS

solid. They have managed to get loads of pressure on the quarterback due to the strength of not just their pass rush, but their defensive backs maintaining solid coverage. That all collapsed for a little over a quarter, and, like a good team should, Perry Hall took advantage and suddenly we had what looked like a classic in the making. And then Sample did what he’s done all year and silenced his opponent. On a key fourth and long from about 30 yards out, Sample found running back Kobi Eure inside the ten, and the senior took it in for the touchdown, sending the fans into pandemonium. It was a great route run - see OWLS on page 8 -

- continued from page 7 by the versatile Eure, but the poise Sample showed in such a high-stakes moment proved that he has everything it takes to lead his team deep into the postseason. Dundalk’s defense refound their footing, causing two takeaways with a recovered fumble and interception by Nicholson against Perry Hall quarterback Reece Wiseman in the third. Wiseman had struggled early in the contest, with an interception leading to Dundalk’s second touchdown of the night. But he got it together with a passing touchdown and a receiving touchdown on a beautifully executed trick play. Wiseman swept the ball to Sebastian Lucas and it looked like Lucas would be swallowed up for a minimal gain. But immediately after the sweep, Wiseman bolted down the sideline and Lucas fed him to bring Perry Hall within a touchdown. Wiseman began the third quarter with another touchdown pass, and the Gator defense managed to stifle a Dundalk drive. With the chance to go ahead, Dundalk’s defense stood firm and caused a fumble which led to Eure’s touchdown. That was followed by the Nicholson interception, and Sample took the team 70 yards before finishing off the drive with a 21-yard rushing touchdown.

On the Owls’ next drive, Sample again finished things off with a scramble from inside the five. And to cap things off for the evening, Sample found wide receiver Ta’vaughn Johnson for a 70-yard score, though plenty of credit needs to be given to Johnson, who has looked deadly all year, on that play. Sample finished the game with a school record eight total touchdowns, five with his legs and three through the air. The eight touchdowns bring his total number up to 32, which is another record for Dundalk. The team as a whole set a record for best start to a season with their ninth straight win. It’s worth noting that while Sample deserves a massive amount of credit, he wouldn’t be able to operate like he does without the likes of Nicholson, Johnson and Eure proving themselves as deadly weapons. Eure rushed for over 140 yards and added a couple dozen through the air, and Johnson and Nicholson managed to get open plenty and capitalize on their receptions. With Dundalk’s offense firing on all cylinders, they’re impossible to beat. Perhaps the most impressive theme of the night was the Owls’ ability to capitalize off of turnovers. Forcing turnovers is always a key to winning, but taking advantage of those turnovers is the most important thing a team can do. And with two touch-

downs set up by interceptions and one coming off of a fumble recovery, the Owls showed that opponents absolutely must take care of the ball lest they face the wrath of the Dundalk offense. The win keeps Dundalk atop the 3A/North standings while Perry Hall’s loss dropped them from fifth to sixth. Dundalk will finish regular season play on Friday when they take on Franklin at home at 6 p.m. The Gators will host Towson on Friday night at 7 p.m.

Around the league

The one-two punch of Ian McBorrough and Brandon Hlavach again combined to lead Eastern Tech to victory with the duo combining for five scores. Western Tech never stood a chance against the Mavericks, with Eastern Tech scoring early and often en route to a 46 - 7 win. Hlavach kicked things off with a 7-yard touchdown reception, which was quickly followed by a goal line run by McBorrough. McBorrough followed that up with a 31-yard rushing touchdown before Hlavach decided he wanted to get back in on the fun, scampering for a 63-yard touchdown in the third quarter. McBorrough responded by upping the ante with a 73-yard rushing touchdown shortly before the end of the third quarter. Tech now sits at 9 - 0 atop the 2A/ North standings, and they currently

find themselves at number nine in the Baltimore Sun high school power rankings (where Dundalk currently sits at 14). The Mavericks will host a strong Overlea team on Friday night at 7 p.m. For Overlea, their postseason hopes were dashed on Friday night with a 35 - 0 loss to Hereford. After starting off the season on the wrong foot, Overlea surged and looked like a postseason dark horse. Instead, they’ll be hoping to cap their season with an upset win over one of the best teams in the area. It’s a tall order, but Overlea has a defense capable of making big plays. Patapsco slipped past Kenwood over the weekend, edging out the Bluebirds by a score of 35 - 30. Like Overlea, Patapsco gave a late-season push that propelled them into a postseason bubble team, but that bubble has since been popped. Still, the Patriots will be proud of all they’ve accomplished this year as they host Woodlawn at home on Saturday at 1 p.m. Elsewhere, Parkville, Chesapeake and Sparrows Point all won over the weekend, though at this point they’re just playing for pride. Sparrows Point certainly regained some after stomping Pikesville 42 - 0. Parkville easily handled Towson by a score of 29 - 7, while Chesapeake managed to squeak one out against Northwestern.

POLITICIANS

A vote investigated

- By Former Del. Jake Mohorovic In an article entitled “District 6 businesses show growth, success” (East County Times, Oct. 1, 2015) Republican Delegate Bob Long wrote, “the Maryland General Assembly passed a balanced budget that included NO TAX INCREASES.” Wow! Delegate Long gave me the impression he voted for the passage of

the Maryland State Budget (House Bill 70) that had no tax increases. This was certainly exciting news. So I double checked with the Maryland Department of Legislative Services to be sure. But my enthusiasm was crushed. Delegate Bob Long actually voted AGAINST the State Budget which had no tax increases. And no increases was the centerpiece of his campaign?

McDonough to celebrate Rain Tax victory

Delegate Pat McDonough will celebrate the termination of the rain tax in Baltimore County with a victory party on Saturday, Nov. 14, at Carson’s Creekside Restaurant in Middle River. McDonough started his long journey against the rain tax more than threeand-a-half years ago. When the law was passed, the delegate would speak about it weekly on his radio show on WCBM, 680 AM. In the beginning, McDonough referred to the law as the “Storm Water Remediation Fee.” He discovered that many people viewed that title as complicated and uninspiring. McDonough then came up with the term “rain tax,” which more clearly defined the problem. The new name caught fire and generated major opposition. The term was picked up nationally by the media, who kept contacting McDonough. In 2014, McDonough introduced legislation to repeal the rain tax, which was defeated in committee. Despite the setback, the delegate continued to speak out on radio and in the community. As part of his re-election campaign, McDonough had “Stop the Rain Tax” on all of his signs and hand-out material. At the grassroots level, the delegate rolled up his sleeves and visited many business owners to encourage them to contact their representatives about the tax.

In the 2015 Maryland General Assembly session, McDonough co-sponsored another repeal bill along with Governor Hogan. The state authority over the rain tax was removed, transferring the power to eliminate the tax to local government. In Harford County, which McDonough also represents, the new executive, Barry Glassman, terminated the rain tax during his first week in office. Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz remained a strong advocate for the tax. McDonough talked with County Council members and continued his campaign on radio and in the community to stop the rain tax. Finally, the Council became united on this issue with a unanimous vote to phase out the rain tax over a two-year period. Kamenetz will be unable to veto or stop this decision. GOODBYE RAIN TAX! McDonough stated, “Three cheers for the County Council! They did a great job. Now, tens of millions of tax dollars will no longer be grabbed by the government. In the future, the people’s money will remain in their own pockets. This new-found stimulus will help lift the county’s economy and create badly needed jobs. This victory proves that you can fight city hall.” For additional info., contact Del. Pat McDonough at 410-238-0025 or [email protected].

New Sandra Bullock film is in ‘Crisis’ from the get-go

- by Teddy Durgin “Our Brand Is Crisis” dares to pose the question: “Is it OK to throw one South American country into complete social and political turmoil if, in the process, Sandra Bullock finds her soul?” According to director David Gorden Green and screenwriter Peter Straughan... yes! Yes, it is. Bullock plays Jane Bodine, a depressed, chain-smoking former election campaign strategist who has been out of the game for six years and living as a recluse in some remote snowy mountain range. She is pressed back into service by an old colleague named Nell (Ann Dowd) to revive the political fortunes of ex-Bolivian President Castillo (Joaquim de Almeida), who wants to return to office after 15 years. Castillo, though, trails by double digits in the polls against a younger, more dynamic rival named Rivera (Louis Arcella). In addition, Rivera’s campaign is being run by Jane’s arch rival Pat Candy (Billy Bob Thornton), whom she has never beaten head to head. As a movie, “Crisis” is a mess. It never finds a consistent tone. It tries to stake out some middle ground between broad comedy and gritty, on-the-ground political drama and comes up short on both counts. Its chief shortcoming, though, is I never really knew what or who I

was supposed to be rooting for while watching it. Is Castillo the right leader for his country? Are we supposed to pull for him? Because, for half the film, he just seems bored and going through the motions of a campaign. Does he really have a vision and a passion for public service? It doesn’t help that every time Rivera is on the screen, you can see his magnetism and why he is the front-runner. At the same time, are we supposed to pull for Jane? She seems like a perfectly miserable sort. Who cares if she burned out in politics half a decade ago? She makes it clear that she was a hired gun who never believed in her candidateclients or loved her country. She loved the game, the rivalries, the dirty tricks, the boozing and schmoozing. She’s clearly brilliant. But nothing gives her joy. She’s all smirks and quiet scoffs and sleepy-eyed cynicism. Green tries his best to give us commercial- and trailer-friendly moments throughout, like Jane stumbling down a flight of steps or throwing up in a trash can or almost falling off a chair. But the pratfalls play like outtakes from one of those “Miss Congeniality” movies and out of place for a flick that has “Wag the Dog”/”Bulworth”/”Ides of March” ambitions. The most interesting aspect of the - see CRISIS on page 14 -

New zombie flick is fun... scouts honor!

CRISIS

- continued from page 13 film is the rivalry with Candy, only because Thornton so effortlessly plays a scumbag. But even that falls short because 1) his candidate just seems to be the better politician, who we’re not allowed to pull for; and 2) the screenplay doesn’t allow Candy enough moments to best Jane, which would have made his eventual comeuppance all the more sweet. Still, I did enjoy their game of one-upsmanship, especially when Jane convinces a conductor to pull out of a train station early while Rivera is still giving a speech to the masses on the back of the caboose. There’s also a great scene late in the film where Jane slyly gets Rivera to quote notorious Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels as a “wise man” during a key campaign speech.

But too many “Aw, come on!” moments pile up throughout. The worst occurs in the film’s closing moments where suddenly we’re asked to believe Jane’s life and career take a complete, 180-degree humanitarian turn as rebellion in the streets intensifies. The film needed to earn this ending. It needed to earn your vote. It didn’t.

- by Teddy Durgin Now, right up front, I can tell you that NO seriousminded reviewer is going to give this movie a positive review. Fortunately, I am not a serious-minded reviewer. “Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse” is a really fun flick, folks, especially if you are someone like me who isn’t burned out on zombie flicks, zombie TV series, zombie video games, zombie cooking shows, etc. Yes, I’ve seen every zombie flick to hit the big screen in recent years - everything from the “Dawn of the Dead” remake to “Warm Bodies.” Unfortunately, with my hectic journalism schedule, I’m too busy to sit down with most TV series. So, I don’t watch “The Walking Dead” or “Fear the Walking Dead.” And I - see ZOMBIE on page 15 -

ZOMBIE

- continued from page 14 really haven’t played video games since my old Atari 2600 gave out and I had to say “Buh-bye” to Pac-Man, Donkey Kong and their respective spouses and offspring. So, I am not burned out on the slow-walking undead who are oh so eager to feast on human survivors. Tye Sheridan, Logan Miller and Joey Morgan star as three lifelong friends who have been Boy Scouts since they were six years old. Now they are sophomores in high school and Sheridan’s Ben and Miller’s Carter want to quit, turn in their dorky uniforms and discover the touch of young females. But Morgan’s Augie doesn’t want to change. He lost his dad a couple of years earlier, and Scouts are a way to keep his dad’s memory alive. Soon, though, none of them will be alive if they contract a zombie virus that’s spreading like wildfire through their small town. They and the local stripper, Denise

(Sarah Dumont), are all that stands between the few human survivors and extinction. Well, that’s not totally true on those last two counts. One, Denise insists that she is just a cocktail waitress at the local touch and feel. And two, the zombie outbreak is not a true apocalypse. It’s localized to their town, and Ben and his friends hear via radio that the military is going to bomb their little burg into oblivion in two hours. That’s how long they have to find Ben’s sister and her friends, who are having a super-secret seniors party at an unknown location. That’s really all the plot you need for this kind of flick. It provides both a mission and a ticking clock for our protagonists. All that’s needed from then on are some well-paced zombie attacks and a dozen or so good gory kills. “Scouts Guide” has both in abundance. My favorite is the surprise attack of a crazy cat lady (Cloris Leachman!) followed by an attack of her... zombie cats!

Clearly, this is not high-brow entertainment. Some of the more raunchy, profane humor is a bit off considering the three leads are essentially a trio of sweet, genuinely nice kids. Personally, I prefer the PG-rated spills and thrills of “Goosebumps” because that never felt like it had to pander to the lowest common denominator for street cred. But the R rating here does feel more appropriate to what is actually going on on screen. Sheridan was remarkable in movies like “Mud” and “Tree of Life.” So, it’s nice to see such a talented young actor elevating a genre pic like this. Miller and Morgan, meanwhile, provide funny support and screen vets Leachman and David Koechner get to ham it up as recently zombified townsfolk who have it in for the boys. ”Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse” is paced well and ultimately delivers for those who like their yuks served up with plenty of yucks.

Winner chosen for Why Pay More service, repair giveaway

From left: Melody Marrone, owner Russell Bates, NAPA representative Harvey Zilber, Service Manager Tim Smith and contest winner Kim Biro.

Kim and Jack Biro of Parkville have been chosen to receive up to $500 in vehicle

service and repairs from Why Pay More Auto Service, Inc. in Essex. They were

nominated by their ex-daughter-in-law, Melody Marrone. Marrone wrote in her nomination that Kim Biro has gone above and beyond to help her and numerous other individuals throughout the last 10 years. Specifically, Biro has helped Marrone who is disabled - and her children (Biro’s grandchildren) by allowing them to live with her and driving them to wherever they need to go, all while caring for her husband who has Alzheimer’s and dementia. Now Biro’s brakes are in desperate need of service with little extra cash to get it done, Marrone explained, and the

family would certainly be in dire straights if the car were taken out of commission. “She makes sure so many people are taken care of, I just want to see her taken care of,” Marrone wrote, adding that Biro is not in great health herself, but still puts everyone else before herself. “If anyone deserves the help, it’s her!” Why Pay More owner Russell Bates gave a special “thank you” to Robert Bolles, manager of the local NAPA auto parts store at 6300 Frankford Ave. in Overlea, for their help with the contest. “And stay tuned; we are in discussions about doing another contest for Christmas!” Bates added.

Operation Gratitude annually sends 150,000-plus care packages filled with food, hygiene products, entertainment and handmade items, plus personal letters of support, addressed to individual soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines de-

ployed overseas, to their children left behind and to veterans, new recruits, first responders, wounded warriors and their caregivers. Through collection drives, letter-writing campaigns, craft projects and financial donations, Operation Gratitude provides civilians anywhere in America a way to say “thank you” to the men and women of the U.S. military through active, handson volunteerism.

Arrests made in connection with body found off I-95

Maryland State Police homicide investigators arrested two individuals connected with the body found on Oct. 27 in a wooded area along I-95, in Baltimore County. The individuals arrested are identified as Mark Vonnordeck, 48, and Dawn Surdi, 61. Both share a residence in the 200-block of Carroll Island Road in Middle River. The two were charged on warrants with first degree murder, first degree assault and second degree assault. Surdi was arrested last on Oct. 30 at her residence without incident. Vonnordeck was located a short distance from the residence after attempting to flee on foot. Vonnordeck and Surdi are being held without bail at the Baltimore County Detention Center. The victim has been identified as Thomas J. Pope, 18, of the 3500-block of Honeysuckle Lane inMiddle River. Pope’s family reported him missing to the Essex Precinct of the Baltimore County Police Department on Oct. 26. Pope’s body was found around noon. in a wooded area along a fire service road near the 71.7 mile marker in Kingsville, Maryland. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled Pope’s death a homicide. Investigators believe the victim was familiar with the suspects. A motive for the murder has not yet been determined. Maryland State Police homicide investigators continue to work in cooperation with members of the Criminal Enforcement Division and the Maryland State Police Forensics Laboratory. Investigators have also briefed the Baltimore County State’s Attorney’s Office on the progress of this case.

Current crime trends

Since Oct. 14, there have been three commercial robberies in the Parkville and White Marsh precincts involving similar motive and suspect description. Cases occurred on weekdays during late morning and afternoon hours. In all three cases, suspects displayed or implied weapons and took money. In the third case, the suspects also took cigarettes. Anyone with information regarding these incidents is urged to contact Baltimore County police.

Fatal crash leads to pursuit, death of child

A fatal crash on Pulaski Highway on Nov. 1 resulted in a secondary crash that led police on a pursuit into Baltimore City, ending in the death of a oneyear-old boy. At 6:49 p.m. Baltimore County Police were notified that a pedestrian had been struck by a motor vehicle on Pulaski Highway near Krueger Avenue. The pedestrian, an adult male, was struck as he attempted to cross Pulaski Highway. The driver remained on the scene. The victim was transported to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, where he was later pronounced deceased. He has been identified as Randolph Croom, 51, of the 8200-block of Pulaski Highway. As a result, a portion of Pulaski Highway was closed while the Baltimore County Crash Investigation Team conducted its investigation. At approximately 9:07 p.m. a silver MercedesBenz traveling on Pulaski Highway struck a Baltimore County Police cruiser assisting in the road closure. The officer assigned to the cruiser suffered non-life-threatening injuries when she jumped over the jersey wall in an effort to get out of the way of the Mercedes. The driver of the Mercedes immediately fled the scene on Pulaski Highway towards Baltimore City, initiating a pursuit by another Baltimore County Police officer who had been assisting with the initial fatal crash investigation. The officer pursued the violator to just inside Baltimore City onto Moravia Road. According to the Baltimore City Police Department, the vehicle was traveling northbound in the 5400-block of Moravia Road, approaching Sinclair Lane on a steady red signal. The Mercedes entered the intersection at a high rate of speed. The front passenger side of the Mercedes struck the rear driver’s side of a Volvo C30. The Volvo made the right turn from eastbound Sinclair Lane onto northbound Moravia Road. The Volvo rotated clockwise and mounted the east curb continuing to rotate into a bus stop were a one-year-old was in a stroller. The Volvo struck the child, who landed near the driveway to the Parkside Shopping Center. The Mercedes then continued north on Moravia Road in the 5300-block, coming to rest approximately 250 feet north of the collision scene.

The child was transported to Johns Hopkins Pediatric ER, where he succumbed to his injuries. The suspect in the Mercedes was transported to Shock Trauma with minor non life-threatening injuries for evaluation. The driver of the Volvo was not injured. The initial fatal crash on Pulaski Highway and the hit-and-run crash into the police cruiser both remain under investigation by the Baltimore County Crash Investigation Team. The crash on Moravia Road resulting in the death of the child will be investigated by the Baltimore City Police Department. Charges against the driver of the Mercedes are pending the conclusion of all related investigations.

Belair Road crash injures Baltimore City officer

At 1:15 p.m. on Oct. 27, Baltimore County Police and Fire personnel responded to the 7100-block of Belair Road in White Marsh for a serious crash. The initial investigation into this crash has indicated that a Baltimore City Police motorcycle was traveling northbound on Belair Road approaching Madeline Avenue. A Jaguar traveling southbound on Belair Road moved to turn left onto Madeline Avenue. The Jaguar turned into the path of the motorcycle, and the two vehicles collided. The operator of the Baltimore City Police Motorcycle, a 15-year veteran of the Baltimore City Police Department, was transported to the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, where he is in critical condition.

IN YOUR WORDS Ensuring safe and healthy learning and work environments should never be an issue that is subject to politics. In his startlingly slanted editorial, “School air conditioning fight heats up between Kamenetz and state leaders” (Oct. 15), Patrick Taylor serves as a mouthpiece for County Executive Kamenetz’s public relations machine and attempts to portray Governor Hogan and Comptroller Franchot as politically motivated. In so doing, Mr. Taylor completely missed the point of this entire public health and safety ordeal. This is not the first time that Mr. Franchot has used his highprofile position to speak up on behalf of thousands of students and teachers who learn and work in unhealthy environments. He has done so starting with Middleborough Elementary School four years ago, and has not stopped since. Myself and other parents of Middleborough Elementary School students fought to get air-conditioning installed in that school. I can

School air conditioning fight heats up

personally say Mr. Franchot absolutely cares for the children of the state of Maryland. Without his help we would have been brushed off like every other group before us. He did it for the health and well-being of the children who attend Middleborough and the staff who work there. Anybody who has followed the town halls he held in Dundalk and Arbutus this month can attest to the fact that this issue is deeply personal, and not at all political, to countless families. Kids and teachers are getting sick, becoming nauseous and faint, and finding themselves unable to concentrate and learn as a result of sweltering classrooms with inadequate air circulation. It’s not about the money either, as Mr. Kamenentz has recently suggested. Our county has gotten more money for school construction and more state funding per pupil than all of our neighboring counties. I was there when Mr Kamenetz had the ability to use money

from the new alcohol tax to help fund air-conditioning. Yet, he chose to replace lockers and stage lighting. When asked why, he said it was to reward the elected officials who voted for the alcohol tax, because it was a “hard vote.” So it wasn’t about need or the students; it was about rewarding fellow politicians. That doesn’t sound political to you does it? And it’s not about the cost and reliability of portable air conditioners. We know they work because they have been installed with great success in Anne Arundel County and elsewhere. Our county leaders need to stop playing the blame game and take action with the state funding that they do have. In our system of government, it is the people’s job to talk and the government’s job to listen. And I hope, for the sake of the health and well-being of our young children and dedicated teachers, that county leaders start listening and start acting. Michael Darenberg, Essex

Regarding the North Point Government Center: Facts, Not Fiction

Contrary to the comments and statements received from the county administration and the developer, let me give you some facts. Thousands of petition signers opposed the sale of the North Point Government Center property and hundreds of letters were sent to state and local agencies. The Baltimore County administration attempted to persuade the citizens by saying the monies for the sale would be used to provide air-conditioning for area schools. Then the county was going to save money by moving the North Point police precinct to the Eastwood Elementary School building to save money. The last I heard, it was going to cost approximately $8 million to transfer the police station to Eastwood. Those dollars could have gone a long way to air conditioning schools in the area. The Government Center has served as a regional park for over 60 years and thousands of citizens in at least 10

communities still rely on it for their recreational needs. The administration states that a “vocal minority” is opposed to the sale of North Point. But the overwhelming amount of residents surrounding the center are opposed to its sale. This is backed by the 7,000-plus petition signers and hundreds of individuals and organizations in the area who have voiced their opposition in writing to the state Board of Public Works and other state and county officials. The sale of park land by Baltimore County sets a dangerous precedent that could make every park and playground in the county vulnerable to sale by its government. The county is supposed to be protecting our parks for future generations, not selling them. The administration states they have had over 60 meetings with the community regarding the Merritt Pavilion Development. There were two required PUD meetings in which a combined 500-plus residents attended in vehement opposition to the sale of North

NOVEMBER 9TH - 15TH

Point; only about 20 attendees spoke in favor of the sale. What communities have they had the remaining meetings with? There have been a number of meetings that occurred with the Dundalk Recreation Council. People from the community were prohibited from attending most of those meetings. For the most part, the actual Dundalk Recreation Council members have remained neutral about North Point. There was a time when the county would meet with the residents about a proposed park to work with them in developing something that would meet the community’s needs. The county’s process at North Point has created a loss of theater space, loss of field space and lack of community input or involvement. Many of the residents and volunteers that are opposing the sale have spent their own money and thousands of hours in dedication to the principles of what recreation - continued on page 19 -

He also incorporated a beautiful stone that marked the passing of a special needs scout in his troop as well as a plaque honoring the combat vets he volunteers with Operation Second Chance/NBLP. Joe’s experiences over 13 years of Scouting included two two-week backpacking treks to Philmont in New Mexico (the second time as lead scout) and working at Broad Creek Scout Reservation in the summer months.
