Sessional Playworker Job Description and Person Specification Purpose of role: To provide holiday play sessions, primarily for children aged 5-12, and at certain sessions for children aged 0-4 with their parents/carers, ensuring a range of stimulating free play opportunities both indoors and outdoors, as part of a team of staff and volunteers. To support children to play in their own way, with their own ideas, for their own reasons. To contribute to the recording and evaluation of sessions. Reporting lines: Responsible to the Play Services Manager. PVG scheme: The role requires individuals to join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme if not already a member. Play Midlothian will cover the cost of this. The post is subject to the PVG Scheme Record accessed prior to the post commencing. Training: Attendance is expected at induction training on play, child protection, health and safety and evaluation, plus at first aid training if required. Duties: 1. To set up resources for free play indoors and outdoors, varying the set up as judged appropriate to stimulate children’s play. 2. To support children to play, helping them to access resources, and joining in with play if invited. 3. Facilitate opportunities for all types and aspects of play, including sensory, physical, intellectual, creative and emotional. 4. To comply with Play Midlothian's risk-benefit assessment policy and procedure, including assessing play sites and play resources for hazards before and during sessions, and taking appropriate action. 5. To carry out dynamic risk assessment of children’s play and intervene where necessary, ensuing a balance is struck between enabling children to challenge themselves and avoiding harm. 6. To attend to injuries or call on first aid support available, as instructed in advance of playscheme. 7. To prepare snack for children attending playschemes. 8. To tidy up and store materials at the end of each session, and assist with the transport of materials to and from the sites as directed. 9. Under the guidance of the Senior Playworker, ensure all children at playscheme have completed registration forms and are registered daily. 10. To carry out tasks in the day to day running of play sessions as instructed by the Senior Playworker and/or Play Services Manager.

11. To contribute to completing necessary paperwork provided, including session records, observations and evaluations. 12. To comply with all Play Midlothian policies and procedures, including ensuring any child protection and wellbeing concerns are reported in accordance with Play Midlothian’s Child Protection Policy. 13. To carry out other duties as may be required from time to time by the Development Manager or Play Services Manager. Additional duties for Senior Playworkers: 1. To take registration money and handle petty cash, ensuring procedures are followed and receipts are kept for expenditure (which must be approved by the Development Manager/Play Services Manager). 2. To oversee registration of all children at playscheme, ensuring relevant forms and documentation is completed. 3. To ensure that registration details and cash are locked away at the end of registration and stored in accordance with Play Midlothian’s data protection policy. 4. To manage snack budget and resources, ensuring sufficient snack supplies are available, in co-ordination with the Play Services Manager. 5. Co-ordinate teams at sessions. Person specification - experience, skills, knowledge and abilities sought: Essential  Experience of working with children aged 5-12  Interest in children’s play and desire to support children to play with their own ideas, in their own way, for their own reasons  Understanding of the importance of free play and outdoor play  Willingness to support all sorts of free play, to be outdoors in all weathers and to get messy  Ability to communicate well with colleagues, children and parents  Commitment to equal opportunities  Experience of working as part of a team  Ability to accurately complete paperwork  Ability to promote a welcoming and supportive atmosphere at playscheme Desirable  Experience of either being a volunteer or working alongside volunteers  Experience of working with children under 5  A Playwork qualification (e.g. SVQ level 2 or 3 or equivalent)  Experience of working in a free play setting or project  Experience of supporting outdoor play  Experience of supporting children with additional support needs  Up-to-date first aid certificate Additional for Senior Playworkers:  Experience in cash handling, working with small budgets and resource management  Experience of working or liaising with parents
