As We Gather

“This is our theology: we teach a precise distinction between these two kinds of righteousness, the active righteousness of doing good works before the world and for the benefit of our neighbor and the passive righteousness of faith which trusts in the works of Jesus Christ for salvation, so that morality and faith, works and grace, secular society and religion may not be confused. Both are necessary, but both must be kept within their limits.” (Martin Luther Lectures on Galatians)

Welcome & Community Greeting

Song (Please remain stand)

“Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee”

1

Joyful, joyful, we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love; Hearts unfold like flowers before thee, Op’ning to the sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; Drive the dark of doubt away. Giver of immortal gladness, Fill us with the light of day!

2

All thy works with joy surround thee, Earth and heaven reflect thy rays, Stars and angels sing around thee, Center of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain, Flowery meadow, flashing sea, Singing bird and flowing fountain, Call us to rejoice in thee.

3

Thou art giving and forgiving, Ever blessing, ever blest, Well-spring of the joy of living, Ocean depth of happy rest! Thou our Father, Christ our brother, All who live in love are thine; Teach us how to love each other, Lift us to the joy divine.

4

Mortals, join the mighty chorus Which the morning stars began; Love divine is reigning o'er us, Leading us with mercy's hand. Ever singing, march we onward, Victors in the midst of strife; Joyful music leads us sunward, In the triumph song of life. Joyful music leads us sunward, In the triumph song of life!

Epistle

1 John 4:11-19 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us. 13By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. 14And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. 16So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. 17By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. 18There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. 19We love because he first loved us. 11

Holy Gospel (Please stand)

Luke 10:25-37 And behold, a lawyer stood up to put [Jesus] to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 26He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” 27And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” 28And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.” 29But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. 31Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. 34He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’ 36Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” 37He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.” 25

Sermon

“The Gospel on Display” (1 John 4:11) Ordinary (Week 2: “Neighbor Love”)

1) LOVE LEADS _____________________________________. This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. 1 John 3:16. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8.

2) LOVE _______________________ DISPLAYS CHRIST ____________________. We love because he first loved us. 1 John 4:19. Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 1 John 4:7. Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Ephesians 5:1-2.

3) GO AND _______________________________________. The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.” Luke 10:37. For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. 2 Corinthians 5:14. (Jesus said), “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.” John 15:12.

Apostles' Creed

LSB 207

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen.

Prayer of Confession (Please stand)

P: O God our Father, C: Since You have set forth the way of life for us in Your Beloved Son, we confess with shame our slowness to learn of Him, our failure to follow Him, our reluctance to bear the cross. Forgive us that we have too often been thoughtless in our judgments and hasty in our condemnations. Forgive us that we have been grudging in forgiveness, slow to seek reconciliation, and unwilling to help our neighbors as You desire. P: Have mercy on us, O God, according to Your steadfast love; C: Create in us clean hearts, O God, and put a new and right spirit within us.

Assurance of Forgiveness

P: In Christ Jesus, the hand of God has reached out and rescued us from sin and death. Christ bore the judgment on the cross for us, and He was raised from the dead to confirm that God’s salvation is complete. By the command of our Lord Jesus Christ, I, a called and ordained servant of the Word, forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son T and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen! Thanks be to God.

C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
