FAMILIES LIVING THE GOSPEL SHELTER THE HOMELESS

Tools

“Pope Francis once surprised parents by asking them to become aware of the homeless hidden in plain sighttheir own children! He observed that too many children were ‘orphans within the family’ because their parents were too busy to ‘waste time’ with their children. Because of this, children, even children in intact families, experience a ‘feeling of orphanhood that…is more profound than we think’ (General Audience, 1/28/15). Giving shelter to the homeless in the little way of family life requires us to go beyond providing the basic necessities of life for those we love, or, for that matter, putting on a good show for our Pinterest followers. It means filling our homes with a powerful sense of love and belonging that provides them a true shelter from the spiritual, emotional, and relational storms of life…Research shows that children are more likely to be religiously committed adults if they experience the Faith as the source of warmth in their home. Cultivating this warmth is what sheltering the homeless in the little way of the family is all about.”
