The Prelude

“Trumpet Processional”

The Welcome and Parish Notes

Fedak

8:30 & 9:45 Led by Martha Aenchbacher 11:00 Led by Chuck Hodges

The Choral Call to Worship 9:45 & 11:00 “The Strife is O’er, the Battle Done” Sung by the Sanctuary Choir

Praise & Thanksgiving *The Processional Hymn

“Prayer is the Soul’s Sincere Desire” Prayer is the soul’s sincere desire, unuttered or expressed, the motion of a hidden fire that trembles in the breast. Prayer is the burden of a sigh, the falling of a tear, the upward glancing of an eye, when none but God is near. Prayer is the simplest form of speech that infant lips can try; prayer the sublimest strains that reach the Majesty on high. Prayer is the contrite sinners’ voice, returning from their way, while angels in their songs rejoice and cry, “Behold, they pray!” Prayer is the Christians’ vital breath, the Christians’ native air; their watchword at the gates of death; they enter heaven with prayer. O Thou, by whom we come to God, the Life, the Truth, the Way: the path of prayer thyself hast trod; Lord, teach us how to pray!

*Please stand as you are able. The congregation speaks or sings the text in bold type.

ST. ANNE

*The Prayer of Confession

God of the Risen Christ, we lay before you everything that keeps us from rising with Christ to new life in you. We confess the burden of our self-righteousness that keeps us from sharing the good news with people we judge unworthy. We confess the burden of our apathy that keeps us from lifting the burdens of others. We confess the burden of our anger that keeps us from acting as a people of peace. Enlighten our souls by the radiance of your Risen Son that we may let your light shine through us. Amen.

*The Gloria Patri

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.

*The Passing of the Peace The Prayers of the People and the Lord’s Prayer 8:30 Led by Eric Fessler

9:45 Led by Chuck Hodges 11:00 Led by Betsy Butler Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day, our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Proclamation of the Word The Offering The Offertory Anthem 9:45 & 11:00 Air and Chorus “Rejoice, Oh Judah” from Judas Maccabaeus

Sung by the Sanctuary Choir; Taylor Greer, soloist Violin | Rachael Fischer, Josh Holritz | Viola: Megan Peyton | Cello: Ana Abrantes Sicilia Bass: Chris Enghauser | Trumpet: David Burrell and Anderson Romero Rejoice, O Judah, and, in songs divine, with cherubim and seraphim harmonious join! Hallelujah! Amen.

*Please stand as you are able. The congregation speaks or sings the text in bold type.

Handel

*The Doxology

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise God, all creatures here below Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise God, the source of all our gifts! Praise Jesus Christ, whose power uplifts! Praise the Spirit, Holy Spirit! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

*The Scripture Reading Matthew 6:9-13 9 “Pray then in this way: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

The Message “Praying With Jesus”

The Sacrament of Holy Communion

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one. 11

John Page

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Almighty God, creator of heaven and earth. You formed us in your image and breathed into us the breath of life. When we turned away, and our love failed, your love remained steadfast. You delivered us from captivity, made covenant to be our sovereign God, brought us to a land flowing with milk and honey, and set before us the way of life. And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might. Heaven and earth are filled with your glory. Hosanna, Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Holy are you, and blessed is your Son Jesus Christ. By the baptism of his of his suffering, death and resurrection you gave birth to your Church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death, and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit. By your great mercy we have been born anew to a living hope through the resurrection

of your Son from the dead and to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading. Once we were no people, but now we are your people, declaring your wonderful deeds in Christ, who called us out of darkness into his marvelous light. On the night in which he gave himself up for us, he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said: “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” When the supper was over, he took the cup, gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, and said: “Drink from this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ’s offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith. Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and wine. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood. By your Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory and we feast at his heavenly banquet. Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy Church, all honor and glory is yours, Almighty God, now and forever. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen.

Pentecost Sunday at Athens First United Methodist is May 19. We will have tables with refreshments prepared for this special day. Wear red and take time for fellowship between our services (after the 8:30 service and before the 11 o’clock service) Pentecost is the festival that celebrates the gift of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the Christian church. In Acts Chapter Two, Jesus had told the disciples to wait in the city where they would be clothed with power from on high. Fifty days after the Resurrection of Jesus, they were gathered in one place and they were praying. There the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples with a mighty wind and tongues of fire. They were filled with the Spirit and began to preach the good news in many languages. Join in the celebration of Pentecost!
