SMALL GROUP QUESTIONS

WEEK: 9

GOAL OF TONIGHT Help students see how God’s story intersects with their story and why that matters in their day-to-day life. WELCOME & ICE BREAKER Welcome back to small group and to GZ! How was your Christmas break? What was the funnest thing you did over break and who did you do it with?

BIBLE VERSES Genesis 2:15-17, Genesis 3:1-7

QUESTIONS TO DISCUSS THE BIBLE VERSES This week begins a 3 week study on the issue of sin. We'll start with the birthplace of sin - the Garden of Eden. Read Genesis 2:15-17 and ask: 1. What was Adam supposed to do for work in the Garden of Eden? 2. What trees was he allowed to eat from? 3. What was going to be the punishment if he ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil? Leaders do this: place a bunch of pieces of candy and a carrot out in front of the students. Tell them they can eat the candy but not the carrot. Tell them the candy tastes way better anyway. Ask them to imagine that they had never tasted any of these things before in their life. Why might they want the carrot anyway? Now read Genesis 3:1-7 and ask these questions: 1. When the serpent asks Eve a question in vs. 1, what is tricky or untrue about the question itself? (Hint: how any trees were they told they could NOT eat from?) 2. What does Satan promise will happen if they eat the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil? 3. Why do you think Adam joined Eve in eating it? 4. Would you have eaten that fruit if you were there? Why or why not? 5. What kinds of "fruit" or sin are middle school students most likely to give in to?

LEADER INSIGHT This lesson shows how tempting sin is and how we are all prone to give in to it. The good news about sin is that it can be FORGIVEN! If students in your group feel shame about their sin, remind them of God's forgiveness. If they seem to not care, then explain how sin separates us from our perfect God and how we need him to forgive us so we can be near to him.

APPLICATION SUGGESTIONS Ask the students to make a list of the sin that is most tempting for them. If they are comfortable with each other, they could share it and pray for each other. If not, they could keep the list and pray to ask God to help them resist temptation this week.
