CAVIUS NANO LIMITED CAVIUS Nano, a New Zealand company based in the Bay of Plenty, and CAVIUS APS, the Danish parent company, collaborated together to create the world’s smallest photoelectric smoke alarm in 2008. This is a unique and significant relationship between a New Zealander and a Danish designer.

Battery Life Doubled

Originally CAVIUS produced a tiny and sleek smoke alarm which contained a 5 year battery, however in June 2013, we were able to make people’s lives that much easier as we introduced a smoke alarm with a 10 year ‘long-life’ battery.

Thermal Heat Alarm Launched Later in November 2013, we designed and produced an alarm which would become a game changer and was seriously needed in homes, the CAVIUS Thermal Heat Alarm. This alarm can be installed directly into a kitchen, laundry or garage.

1 Million Alarms Sold

Since then, CAVIUS has sold over 1 million alarms worldwide that continue to help protect homes and save lives. Constant testing in the world’s best fire safety laboratories and input from the world’s leading fire experts help make CAVIUS alarms not only the smallest but also one of the most trusted.

THE CAVIUS ADVANTAGE Why choose CAVIUS? Because our alarms are superior to other standard designs for more than one reason:

Core Technology

Software

Design

The software also includes a calibration routine, which stores a gain factor in flash memory. This is more accurate than the variable resistor set by hand on most other alarms, and much more reliable long term. The software also includes features for self-test, hush mode after alarm, and battery test.

The world’s smallest smoke and heat alarms were designed by a Danish team, who are experienced in developing high quality system smoke alarms to EN54-7 certification.

The CAVIUS alarms use the highest quality components to ensure reliability in performance, stability and the alarm will be 100% operational during their lifetime of 10 years.

Chamber Size

To maintain a high quality performance; CAVIUS invest additional cost in the manufacturing of optical components, amplifiers for the photodiode and a micro controller to carry out signal processing.

Performance

The performance of the smoke sensor includes a wide smoke entry in all orientations around the alarm. It also includes strong resistance to false alarms due to point sources of contamination, insects, and humidity. CAVIUS smoke alarms are certified for recreational vehicles where the exposure to different humidity and change in temperature is greater.

The software in the CAVIUS smoke alarm includes a fire detection algorithm with features similar to that found in expensive analogue detection systems.

Manufacturing

During the manufacturing stage, 100% of all CAVIUS alarms are tested in a smoke tunnel to ensure the right calibration and every single piece is checked in an echoic room for sound output test. Samples from each production week are sent to an accredited lab and an external audit company will inspect and test the alarms before shipping them to the retailer. Our factory is audited several times per year from NF, VdS, and ISO.

ARE PHOTOELECTRIC SMOKE ALARMS BETTER THAN IONISATION SMOKE ALARMS?

YES!

Within the fire protection and prevention industry, it is recognised that photoelectric smoke alarms are significantly better at detecting smouldering fires (which are more common in households), whereas ionisation sensors respond marginally faster to flaming fires.

COMPARISON OF TECHNOLOGIES Photoelectric

Ionised

A photoelectric smoke alarm’s sensing chamber contains a light emitting diode and a light sensitive receiver. When smoke, or other by-products of combustion, fills this chamber the light beam is scattered and sets off the alarm. Photoelectric smoke alarms are suitable for living rooms, dining rooms, hallways and bedrooms. This is because these rooms often contain large pieces of furniture such as sofas, chairs, and mattresses, which, while burning, will create more smouldering smoke than intense flame and heat. However photoelectric smoke alarms will recognise both fire stages.

An ionisation type smoke alarm uses radioactive material to ionize air in the sensing chamber. As a result, the air chamber becomes conductive, permitting current to flow between two charged electrodes. When smoke, or other by-products of combustion enter the chamber, the conductivity of the air within the chamber decreases. When this reduction in conductivity is reduced to a predetermined level, the alarm is set off.

This type of smoke alarm is now the internationally recommended solution for household use.

For the past decade, it has been recognised around the world from conducting laboratory and field testing - that Photoelectric alarms respond significantly faster to smouldering fires (more common). In several countries ionisation alarms have been removed from their Building Code. In Australia, photoelectric smoke alarms are mandated in most states and Queensland have put into legislation that all houses must have photoelectric smoke alarms by 2027.

SMOKE ALARMS SAVE LIVES! By combining state-of-the-art electronics and superior product design, CAVIUS has produced the world’s smallest Photoelectric Smoke Alarm and Thermal Heat Alarms.

The award winning CAVIUS alarms not only have the latest technology but they look great, last a long time and are incredible value for money!

After a significant investment building, renovating or redecorating, there is no better way to complement your design than with CAVIUS alarms.

The New Zealand Fire Department recommends photoelectric smoke ALARMs and ‘long-life’ batteries; they also recommend one in every room and on all levels of a building.

Both our 40mm and Wireless Family range are much more aesthetically pleasing than the traditional large and unsightly smoke alarms. They are easy to install and activate with the unique ‘Smart Clip” ceiling mechanism. They have an audio alert output of 85dB(A) at 3 meters, generating a piercing alarm designed to wake you from your sleep. CAVIUS 30-day low battery warning increases your chances of identifying and attending to that flat battery. Both ranges have the intelligent multifunction hush button. This button can be used to test the alarm as well as hush the alarm should a false alarm occur. Once placed in hush mode, the alarm will automatically reactivate after 10 minutes, allowing you time to clear the air. It also emits a regular, dim lowlight flash to let you know the device is active and operating.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q How many smoke alarms do I need in my house? A CAVIUS and the New Zealand Fire Department recommend one in every room. To obtain NZ Building Code compliance, contact your local council. Q Why do I have to clean my smoke alarm? A Regardless of brand or type, smoke and fire particles need to reach an alarm’s sensing chamber to activate the siren. If dust, grime or insects enter the sensing chamber the alarm may randomly beep or even worse, block the smokes entrance into the alarm resulting in failure to activate. The best way to look after your alarm is by regularly vacuuming your alarm with the brush attachment. You can download our Maintenance Guide on the CAVIUS website for further cleaning advice. Q What battery do I buy in ten years? A None, the battery in the 40mm CAVIUS alarm lasts the lifetime of the alarm and gives you a 30 day low battery warning. All residential smoke alarms expire (by law) after a maximum of ten years from date of manufacture, even alarms hardwired into a security system. Many manufactures of ionisation alarms recommend replacement after five years, as fuel for the sensing chamber lowers. Q What alarm do I install as a landlord? A CAVIUS Smoke Alarms meet the new Tenancy Regulations. After 1st July 2016, ten-year long life Photoelectric alarms must be purchased for installation into all tenancies under the Residential Tenancies Act 1986; this includes boarding houses, caravans or cabins that are tenanted for longer than 28 days. For further information, you can visit www.legislation.govt.nz

Q If my neighbour and I both have the Wireless Family

alarms installed, will both of our alarms go off if activated? A No. When you install your Wireless Family alarms you place them into LEARN/LINK mode initially. You then nominate one alarm as the ‘master’, this will send out a unique code to only the alarms in LEARN/LINK mode that are near at the time. You can add further Wireless Family alarms to your home in future, by placing them back into the LEARN/LINK mode process. Q What do the New Zealand Fire Service recommend? A The NZ Fire service strongly recommends ‘long-life’ photoelectric alarms and has recommended the use of photoelectric over ionisation alarms for ten years. For further information, you can visit their website www.youronlyvoice.co.nz

COST COMPARISONS A very simple and easy cost comparison is to consider a low-cost smoke alarm at between $10 and $20. Add to this the cost of replacement batteries at approximately $10 per battery, per annum and after 10 years the total cost would be $120.00. The RRP for the CAVIUS Photoelectric Smoke Alarm with a 10-year, ‘long-life’ battery, is just $49.90. The initial cost may be higher, however, over time CAVIUS proves to be more economical.

WHERE SHOULD I INSTALL THE SMOKE AND HEAT ALARMS? PLACEMENT: The best place for any smoke alarm is on the ceiling in the centre of the room they are intended to protect. Installation on the wall is not recommended, nor is it recommended to install an alarm within 50cm from the corner where the ceiling and wall join. Corners of rooms and the apex of cathedral ceiling are areas referred to as ‘Dead Air Zones’. Oxygen gathers in these areas when smoke starts to form. No smoke alarms will sound when placed in these areas. DEALING WITH NUISANCE ALARMS When it comes to smoke alarms in the kitchen, both ionisation and photoelectric can have their issues. It has been observed that ionisation alarms have a propensity to false alarm when exposed to aerosols produced in the early stages of some cooking activities, prior to noticeable smoke production. Even though photoelectric technology significantly reduces the chances of nuisance alarms, these contaminants result in a build-up in the sensing chamber which can impair performance of a smoke alarm.

KITCHEN Over 34% of residential fires start in the kitchen, yet no smoke alarm has been able to be installed directly into the area. That is the reason why CAVIUS designed the Thermal Heat Alarm. By using state-of-the-art technology, the Thermal Heat Alarm monitors normal and expected changes in ambient room temperature. If rapid and constant change of temperature increases, the Thermal Heat Alarm will sound. The Thermal Heat Alarm detects flaming fires in two ways. Firstly, it will work to detect slowly developing flaming fires by using a fixed temperature setting. Secondly, where rapid response to fire is vital, rate of rise is used. The Thermal Heat Alarm is designed for areas not suitable to install smoke alarms; kitchens, garages, workshops and laundries.
