Smith gives, even after death By The Associated Press CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Dean Smith is still giving to his North Carolina players — even after his death. SPORTS Tim BreedNOTEBOOK love, the Charlotte-based trustee of the trust that bears the late coach’s name, said Thursday that letters were sent earlier this month to each of the players who lettered for Smith’s Tar Heel teams — about 180 in all. The letter says Smith directed that following his death, each letterman was to be sent a $200 check with the message “enjoy a dinner out compliments of Coach Dean Smith.” The checks were attached to the letters. The Hall of Fame coach died Feb. 7 at age 83, and a memorial service two weeks later at the campus arena that bears his name drew about 10,000 people with lines snaking around the building more than an hour before fans could enter. It drew a list of attendees that included current UNC coach and Smith disciple Roy Williams, and former players Phil Ford, Brad Daugherty and Antawn Jamison. Upon Smith’s death, tributes flowed in from across college basketball: pregame moments of silence were held at venues where the Tar Heels weren’t even playing. North Carolina ran Smith’s famed “Four Corners” offense — and eventually scoring out of it — to open a game against Georgia Tech. Pacers can’t catch Bucks MILWAUKEE — Ersan Ilyasova scored a career-high 34 points Thursday, leading the Milwaukee Bucks to a 111-107 victory over the Indiana Pacers. George Hill missed a potential tying 3-pointer in the closing seconds for struggling Indiana. C.J. Miles scored 26 points, Hill added 24 and C.J. Watson had 23 for the Pacers. They were without forward David West because of an allergic reaction. Were the Pacers tired after ending a six-game losing streak in Washington on Wednesday? “No excuse,” Pacers coach Frank Vogel said. “We played six straight teams with back-to-backs. Some of them came in with a lot of energy. I thought we played with energy but we just weren’t very good early.” Tyndall fired at Tennessee KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee athletic director Dave Hart says he wouldn’t have hired coach Donnie Tyndall if he’d known the details of his activities during his tenure at Southern Miss that surfaced during an NCAA investigation. After learning of the details Hart fired Tyndall, who was 16-16 in his lone year at Tennessee. In his termination letter today, Hart said Tyndall acknowledged deleting emails that could have been relevant to the investigation. The Tennessee AD said it’s highly likely the NCAA will determine Tyndall failed to cooperate and that he failed to disclose “material information concerning violations of NCAA rules” during Tennessee’s hiring process. Hart says the NCAA also will likely determine that “Level I and/or Level II violations relating to academic fraud and impermissible financial aid” occurred during Tyndall’s Southern Mississippi tenure.
