Excerpt from the Sermon Journal, Monday, June 3, 2019 Written by Pastor Tom Harrison REMEMBER: Presence Presence has both vertical and horizontal components – God’s presence and our presence. We respond to God’s gracious initiative by showing up and having a worshipful spirit. Our faith begins in worship. Everything else within our faith (evangelism, discipleship, missions, etc.) will someday end, but worship never ends. Worship is eternal. We will be present with God forever. If we have learned to love God in this life, heaven is our best news ever. If we have not learned to love God, the idea of being united with God forever may seem like eternal punishment. When we come together to pray and worship, God is honored, His people are blessed, and we are energized and deployed for mission. When students do not attend class, the outcome is predictable. Likewise, influence and impact are damaged when Christians neglect to come together to be the church. Schools aren’t perfect. Work environments always need improvement. Families have dysfunction. The church, like all human institutions, has imperfections, but if we drop out of school, work, family or church because of limitations, we lose our ability to grow and to influence for good. God moves in special power when His people are present and attentive to the things of God. Great things happen when God’s people show up. Presence builds Christian community in worship and in the world.

Something to Think About: Here is a three-part challenge to go with this series: • Challenge yourself, your Christian friends and your family to have perfect attendance in worship. • Challenge yourself to be fully present and engaged in the worship (singing, prayers, liturgies, sacraments, offerings—all of it). • Challenge yourself to come with the expectation God is present and eager to be with you.

Asbury’s Response to Oklahoma Flooding

Flood Buckets

Asbury was the initial distribution point for UMCOR’s (United Methodist Committee on Relief) flood buckets for Northeast Oklahoma. A flood bucket is a five-gallon bucket filled with items useful for cleaning a flooded home, such as detergents, sponges, gloves, masks, heavy duty trash bags, clothesline and insect repellent. An initial shipment of 1,748 buckets arrived at the Venue, and all were distributed in four days.

Tulsa Boys Home

Due to flooding, seventeen boys along with support staff spent ten days and nights in the Venue. Asbury provided several dinners, served by Asbury volunteers, which allowed great interaction with the boys. Student Ministries included them in a pancake breakfast and Sunday morning programming.

Bixby Outreach Center

Asbury provided supplies and volunteers to our existing Local Outreach Partner.

Clean Up Begins

Asbury members started cleaning/mucking out houses this past week, and there are months of work ahead. Floods ruin furniture, walls and floors and leave a layer of “muck” that must be shoveled out.

How Can I Help? • Pray – Pray for peace and perseverance for those who have been flooded. Pray for hearts to be open to Jesus in a new way in the midst of such loss. • Volunteer – If you are interested in serving on a team, please sign up online at asburytulsa.org/flood or contact the church office at 918.492.1771. • Give – You can give to Asbury with the designation of flood relief. All donations will stay in Tulsa and the surrounding areas of Oklahoma and will be used by Asbury’s partner ministries and teams.
