Sport Wanganui News - Term Four 2014

SPORTING ACHIEVEMENTS RECOGNISED The 2014 Ray White Wanganui Sports Awards were held on Friday 21 November with a total of 360 guests attending. It was a fantastic evening with guest MC Ben Hurley keeping the audience smiling and laughing throughout. Ten major awards were presented along with two new recognition categories, Sport Wanganui Services to Sport and Rivercity Gas Disabled Sportsperson. It was a jam-packed programme with the evening also including presentations to six Sport Wanganui Roll of Honour inductees, Bev Shingles was inducted into the Wanganui Sports Hall of Fame, four Tupoho Sports Scholars were announced, as were two Future Champions Trust scholarship recipients. Highlights of the evening were the two ‘couch talk’ segments with Ben quizzing special guests Joline Henry, Jodi Brown and Cath & Dayle Cheatley about their sporting careers and experiences. With a total of 97 nominations received over 11 categories it was always going to be a tough task for the judging panel, but they did well and chose truly deserving winners. Sport Wanganui would like to thank all sponsors, nominators, nominees and guests, all of whom made the event a magic night.

Sport Wanganui have been working with clubs and codes to help lift their profiles, through a dedicated radio advertising campaign. ‘Spotlight on Sport’ provides a month of radio promotion with More FM Wanganui. Representatives from the sport of the month are given the opportunity to join Craig Hanford and Sue Miller in the MoreFM studio during their prime-time early-morning show. On their 6.00am-10.00am weekly programme, Craig and Sue highlight local community events and activities, with Spotlight on Sport featured on two Mondays in the month. The month of promotion comes with a radio commercial produced especially for the sport. The codes can promote anything they want to from events, open days, fundraising activities, or just general awareness about their sport and how the public can get involved. At a time when choices in sport are varied and wide for all ages, it’s important that clubs and codes market their sport and let the public know what’s on offer. The Spotlight on Sport campaign has given codes a great opportunity.

SCHOOLS THANK THOSE WHO GIVE THEIR TIME Sport Wanganui have been helping schools to recognise and reward their sport volunteers through the Lotto Volunteer Foundation Thank A Sportmaker campaign, giving away sports apparel to welldeserving volunteers. Primary schools in Wanganui and secondary schools in Rangitikei/Ruapehu are being offered the opportunity to gift their sport volunteers a Lotto Volunteer hooded sweatshirt, as thanks for the work that they do for the students. The cosy ‘hoodies’ are all courtesy of the Lotto Volunteer Foundation, Sport New Zealand and Sport Wanganui. There are many people in our school communities regularly giving their time freely so that school students can be involved in sports activities. Without these volunteers many children would miss out on valuable sporting opportunities. Sport Wanganui congratulates those school sport volunteers that have received a Lotto Volunteer sweatshirt – carry on the good work! Do you have a sport event you would like people to know about? Send it through to us and we will include it on the Events section of our website. All you need to do is send through the event name, date, time, venue and any extra information you have to [email protected] Please note that the content and quantity will be at our discretion.

E On Friday 26th September 786 kids from 26 schools participated in The Downs Group Rangitikei Tough Kid at McIntyre Reserve in Ohingaiti. Rangitikei, Ruapehu, National Park and even a school from the Manawatu battled it out, as kids squeezed, dived, crawled and slid their way through a mixture of obstacles around the course. Congratulations to South Makirikiri School who are the Toughest School for 2014, closely followed by Hunterville School in second and St Joseph’s School Taihape in third. Special thanks must go to Mangaweka School for their assistance hosting the event, and all the volunteers who represented the schools and helped out on the day. We can’t wait to be back in 2015!

On Saturday 18th October 528 eager participants battled the wind and rain to take on either a 3km, 5km or 10km course of rugged countryside at Rangitikei Farmstay. Muddy crawls, slippery hills, boggy pits, speedy slides and lots of laughs made up a fantastic day at the 2014 McDonald’s Mud Muster. Although a bit dry in the weeks leading up to the event, some intense downfalls a couple of days out ensured the dams were full and the ground was wet, which resulted in LOTS of MUD— true to the event’s name! Special thanks must go to McDonald’s Wanganui for their continued support and partnership with the event, and also to Rangitikei Farmstay for offering their awesome venue and for all their help. Thanks also to the following people who assisted us on the day—your help was much appreciated: Whanganui Maori Wardens Trust, Traffic Safe NZ, Tranzit Coachlines, Pak n Save Wanganui, Harvey Norman Wanganui, Volunteer Whanganui, all of the fantastic course marshals and event volunteers! Be sure to check out the photo page in the newsletter, and visit the Sport Wanganui Facebook page for more snaps from the day!

GREEN PRESCRIPTION NEWS OUR ACTIVE TEENS STORIES Rebecca - 16 years old I have been involved with the Sport Wanganui Green Prescription Active Teens programme and have been coming to the Splash Deck gym for over two years now. I was encouraged by my Mum as she suggested it could help me to get fitter for summer and in preparation for my netball season. Since starting Active Teens my fitness level has improved dramatically. From when I first started to now the biggest change has been managing my gym workout. I was doing so well I was given a more complex workout which I can get through with more confidence. All those involved with Active Teens are very supportive which is what has enabled me to continue to improve my fitness and they give me the encouragement to stick to my goals. I thoroughly encourage others to give it a go.

Chelsea - 15 years old I have been taking part in the Active Teens for over five months. I was motivated to join from my friend who had been involved and got amazing results. I had finished with rowing and had lost the momentum to exercise but by joining Active Teens I was able to maintain my fitness instead of continuing in a sport. The Active Teens programme encourages you to do your best. The Active Teens coordinator Deb and the fabulous instructors are there to make sure you are doing your exercises correctly.

As well as going to the gym we also get to go to Boxfit classes. Boxfit believes in ‘no machines’ as you are the machine. The great thing about Active Teens is we have access to the gym and the pools at the one facility. I love this programme it works for me and would say to other teenagers to definitely give it a go as it’s designed to suit all fitness levels from beginners and over. Right: Rebecca & Chelsea enjoy the Splash Deck facilities at the Splash Centre.

WELCOME RAEWYN GRx would like to welcome Raewyn Robinson to the team. Raewyn joined the team part time in October 2013 and is now our permanent Client Support Person. Raewyn is passionate about helping people become active and supporting them to continue to be physically healthy. She enjoys outdoor activities and you will find her most mornings at 6am enjoying Bootcamp class or out for a run.

JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL TOUCH Junior Secondary School Touch for year 9 and 10 students was offered this term to introduce more juniors to the game and offer another after school sport option. The idea was initiated by Wanganui High School and was supported by Sport Wanganui. A total of 15 school teams are involved from a number of schools; Wanganui High School, Wanganui Girls’ College, Cullinane College, Te Kura o Tupoho, Wanganui City College and also Wanganui Intermediate School. It was a real highlight to see a large number of students involved and enjoying themselves. A special thank you to Wanganui City College for the use of their fields on a Friday after school and also to the senior students from each school and coaches that referee’d each week.

VOLLEYBALL MIDWEEK LEAGUE The volleyball after-school Midweek League for primary, intermediate and secondary schools proved to be very popular for Term 4 with 104 primary, 110 intermediate and 78 secondary school kids giving Volleyball a go. The aim of the Midweek Leagues is to get students participating in organised after school sport in a fun, accessible, ‘give it a go’ environment. The leagues are inclusive of all abilities, are low cost and there are no barriers to signing up and getting involved. The students really enjoy the competition against other schools and the opportunity to play other similar skilled teams. 2015 will see the return of KiwiSport funded Midweek Leagues for secondary, intermediate and primary schools. These leagues are open to all students and are about giving the sport a go and getting involved. Talk to your sport coordinator at school to see what leagues are being offered for 2015.

E The fourth Mitre 10 MEGA Tough Kid® took place on Friday 31st October and another great day was had by all! A whopping 1,402 kids took part from 28 schools, making it our biggest Tough Kid® yet! Cooks Gardens was transformed into a maze of obstacles which had kids wading through sawdust pits, tackling the slippery inflatable while dodging the fireman's hose, manoeuvring through the Wanganui Police bamboo crawl and overcoming their darkest fears by making their way through the haunted house! Special congratulations to Wanganui Intermediate who are the 2014 Toughest School—Senior, and to St John’s Hill School who are the 2014 Toughest School—Junior. A special thanks must go to the Dub.Dee.See Youth Committee for their support in getting The 4:30 Show to town to showcase our youth and the great things that happen in our town!!

On Friday 28th November 67 kids from 28 schools merged together and became Mitre 10 MEGA Team Wanganui! The team departed Wanganui in the early hours of the morning and headed to New Plymouth to experience the TAG Oil Tough Kid®, which was run by Sport Taranaki. With a similar format to our own Mitre 10 MEGA Tough Kid® event, our Team Wanganui kids hurtled themselves around an obstacle course set up right across Yarrow Stadium fields. This included balancing over beams, jumping trucks, crawling through dark tunnels, sliding down the mighty slip and slide and battling their way up the bushy track to reach the finish line. This was an awesome opportunity for our regions kids to come together as one team and experience a Tough Kid® of a different kind. Thanks heaps to Mitre 10 MEGA Wanganui for supporting TEAM WANGANUI!

On Thursday 13 November, 24 year 9-13 students from Te Kura o Tupoho and Te Kura o Kokohuia participated in a Mini Tri event at Springvale Park. The event was organised by Sport Wanganui in partnership with Te Oranganui, the Whanganui Multisport Club and the two kura’s. The Mini Tri was part of an eight week training programme that is aimed predominantly at Maori students to improve young people’s hauora and encourage participation and involvement in sport and triathlon. The Mini Tri was a great opportunity for all participating students to practice transitions from swim to bike and from bike to run. Students had the opportunity to give all three disciplines a go individually or as part of a team. The Mini Tri also acted as preparation for those students who will go on to participate in the TriMaori on November 22nd at Lake Karapiro as well as prep for the TriWhanganui on 3rd December. This event will include all 46 students involved in the training programme from Te Kura o Tupoho, Te Kura o Kokohuia and also Wanganui City College. For more information please contact Amie Simpson at Sport Wanganui on 3492882 or [email protected]

It’s time to say goodbye and good luck to one of our valued and respected sport associates, Dale Cobb. Dale has been a highly effective CEO of the WRFU for six years. Ten years with the Wanganui Rugby Football Union, Dale has been our ‘next door neighbour’ in the WRFU offices and we have enjoyed his generous character, affable humour and good-natured banter. We will miss Dale popping into our office with his opening line, “What’s happening team?” All the best to you Dale! Right: Dale and Steelform Wanganui captain Peter Rowe hold the Lochore Cup.

Sport Wanganui’s biggest single project, Fundamental Movement Skills Programme is generally finished for the year by the end of week six. The final session in the programme, which is in its fourth year now, sees the students undertake a range of tests under the supervision of Sport Wanganui’s trained deliverers. The tests determine the skill level of the kids in areas from basic movement to manipulation and coordination. This information is available for the teachers to use as the basis of a report on the standard of the child’s “physical literacy” just as they would in any of the mainstream curriculum subjects. This is an important part of our philosophy at Sport Wanganui and is in keeping with the outcomes prescribed by Sport NZ, our majority funder and also utilises a percentage of the KiwiSport funding allocated to our organisation to use in areas of maximum need.

It’s that time of the year when we are all getting ready to celebrate the beginning of summer and the end of a long cold winter! The team and I at Inspire only really take note of the weather when we notice an increase in casual visitors who have decided not brave the ever changing day outside. It’s a time for us to reflect upon how and if we truly have been able to impact on the health and wellbeing of the Whanganui Community? The simple answer is YES! We are now in our third year of business and so we are totally focused on ensuring we continue to be at the forefront of the health and fitness industry in Whanganui!

We have recently started our 4th instalment of our successful Why Weight Programme which we currently run on Sunday and Tuesday nights. The main objectives of the Programme are to educate and improve the lives of individuals who need help to get their active lives back on track. Subjects covered include: Weekly weigh-in’s, Nutrition workshops, personal training one to one, group fitness classes and other workshops.

We are also about to finish our first Bioscan Challenge which will see our contestants finish the 12 week challenge on the 3rd of December with their final scans. The Bioscan Challenge is the next step in results based training where all challenge participants are competing against their own results from the first scan to the last scan. The four categories are as follows: Weight (without shoes) Skeletal muscle mass Body fat loss Fitness score

Our new initiative which has been designed to assist both individual, teams and other groups that require specialised testing to measure levels of fitness. The Battery testing can be customised to suit the requirements of groups and individuals. We are in the process of working with the following groups: Wanganui Age group teams Stanford House Kaiwhaiki Netball Club Tests range from agility testing, aerobic endurance, strength, flexibility and all other fitness variables. All tests are based at both Cooks Garden and the Inspire Health & Fitness Centre and bookings are essential! For more information on what’s happening at Inspire Health & Fitness check out our website or like us on our face book page to be part of the Inspire difference!

Each category could have a different winner and most importantly the focus is placed upon the increase or decrease over the 12 week challenge. Next Bioscan Challenge starts first week in February 2015. Our next Bioscan date is for Wednesday 03rd December 2014 so make a booking today with the team.

WANGANUI BOYS & GIRLS GYM CLUB Wanganui Boys and Girls Gym Club member Millie Manning (15) represented New Zealand in the Prime Invitational Gymnastics competition in Singapore on the 8th of November. She competed strongly and won a gold medal on the floor and a bronze medal on the vault. The competition was attended by athletes from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand. New Zealand had a total of 11 athletes that were selected to the development team competing in the Invitational. The team took out several gold, silver and bronze medals as well as a few team placings. The team were accompanied by a Gymsports New Zealand appointed coach, manager and judge who were delighted by the high standard of the New Zealand team. James Keatley, the team coach, said "Millie has really improved since the start of the year". Club manager Julie Holden was thrilled with Millie’s results, “I am very happy for her, she works very hard and she is a fantastic role model for the club. She is very deserving of her success.” Acknowledgment goes to Millie’s coach Kelly Taylor-Ward from the Wanganui Boys and Girls Gym Club who encouraged Millie to trial for the Singapore competition and has given so much of her time and knowledge. Millie and her family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the many individuals and local businesses in the Wanganui community who donated towards Millie’s trip. Without these Photo credit: Alphapix photography generous people helping Millie reach her goal, this experience wouldn't have been possible.

A huge congratulations to everyone who participated in the gruelling hour-long Bootcamp sessions held every Wednesday morning, including three of our cashiers. We’ve had a great turnout for our first special monthly Manic Mayhem events. Numbers increased dramatically compared to our weekly events as we saw kids turn out in support of our Blue September Event and loads of scary little critters crawling out to party with us during our Halloween event. Not wanting to miss out on any of the fun, our staff embraced their inner child and mucked in by getting their faces painted and old uniforms torn up! We saw an increase in admission sales from witches, zombies and other scary creatures - great to see diversity at the Splash Centre. Manic Mayhem will continue every Friday evening at 6pm finishing at 8pm, so if you are between 8 and 14 years of age we want to see you here! Mark the date and don’t be late.

Our very own ‘Major Pain’, Sergeant Lyneve Ryland was very impressed with the commitment and enthusiasm shown by each individual. The six week Bootcamp has finished and ended very successfully. If you missed out on our first Bootcamp and are kicking yourself for it, don’t worry because Lyneve will be back in full force and showing no mercy starting Friday 28th November 2014. Our Outdoor Training programme will be a step up from our Beginners Bootcamp but you will enjoy it just as much. Head to the Splash Centre website for more information or come and see us here at the Splash.

January Holiday Activities This year, Splash Centre had five of our own staff participate in the McDonald’s Mud Muster event and thoroughly enjoyed it. We would like to acknowledge Sport Wanganui’s efforts in organising a great event. We would also like to thank them for supporting our staff during the event. Barry Kiriona (above) and Arana McDonnell (left) took part in the fun event.

Christmas holidays are just around the corner and so are the Splash Centre’s Holiday Activities. End the holidays on a high note by joining us for three days full of activities and fun!

Learn to Swim Holiday Programme Our hugely popular 8-day block course Learn to Swim holiday programme will be running from 5th January 2015. Make sure you contact our Learn to Swim office to book your child an assessment. You can contact Christine or Roslyn by phone on 06 349 2505 or alternatively, you can call in and see us at the Splash Centre.
