Spring 2018 Lesson Calendar Girls on the Run (3rd-5thgrade)

To establish basic expectations to foster a positive, inclusive environment. To begin to build connection within our Girls on the Run team. To identify and celebrate our similarities and differences. Lesson 2: Choosing to be a Girl on the Run: To recognize our ability to choose attitudes and actions that show respect for ourselves and others. To choose attitudes and actions that will help our Girls on the Run team work well together. To increase awareness around the concept of living with intention. Lesson 3: Star Power: To practice using visualization to positively impact our thinking, feelings, and behaviors. To find strategies for activating our Star Power. To recognize when we need help from others to activate our Star Power. Lesson 4: Self-Talk Matters: To identify negative self-talk and how it influences us. To learn how to catch ourselves engaging in negative self-talk. To practice using positive self-talk. Lesson 5: Balance: To explore the concept of maintaining balance in our lives. To recognize the parts of our star where we can find balance. To practice interval running. Lesson 6: Exploring Emotions: To name the emotions we experience. To explore comfortable and uncomfortable emotions. Lesson 7: Stop and Take a BrThRR: To recognize how our bodies react when we experience strong, uncomfortable emotions. To learn a Girls on the Run strategy for dealing with strong, uncomfortable emotions. To understand that we have a choice in how we respond to situations. Lesson 8: Empathy: To define empathy. To identify the steps in showing empathy. To practice showing empathy in a variety of situations. Lesson 9: Making Friends: To understand that friendship takes time and effort. To build relationships between girls on the team.

Lesson 10: Being Friends: To recognize the characteristics we look for in a friendship. To recognize the characteristics we bring to a friendship. Lesson 11: Choosing Friends: To realize that we have the power to choose our friends. To identify qualities we look for in a friendship. To identify situations we may face in friendships. Lesson 12: Communicating with Others: To gain strategies for communicating with others. To recognize the importance of communication. To learn how to stand up for ourselves. Lesson 13: Working as a Team: To practice cooperating with others. To understand how cooperation impacts a team. Lesson 14: How We Help: To list the communities to which each girl belongs. To recognize how each girl helps her community. To understand that we all play an important part on a team. Lesson 15: Practice 5k: To complete a 5k. To think about how we are strong mentally, emotionally, and physically. To set a goal for the end-of-the-season 5k. To learn that hard work allows us to set a goal and accomplish it. Lesson 16: Compromise: To practice compromising with teammates. To recognize how we can help different communities. To choose a Community Impact Project to complete. Lesson 17: Our Strengths: To recognize our strengths. To plan the Community Impact Project. Lesson 18: Choosing Gratitude: To understand that being grateful is a choice. To understand that being grateful provides us with a positive perspective of our circumstances. To recognize the people, places, circumstances, etc. for which we are grateful. Lesson 19: Using Our Star Power: To complete the Community Impact Project. Lesson 20: Our GOTR Toolbox: To determine situations in which we can use the tools in our GOTR toolbox. To reflect on our time in Girls on the Run. *SUNDAY MAY 20 – GOTR 5k at the Asheville Outlets – 9:00am Registration, 10:00am 5k Start*
