Squeeze sparks Reds By The Associated Press

PHOENIX — Dusty Baker rarely uses the squeeze bunt, let alone trying it with a 40-year-old on third base with MLB one out in the ninth inning. But Jim Edmonds showed some hustle scoring from third base on pinch-hitter Chris Heisey’s perfectly executed bunt that scored the go-ahead run as the Cincinnati Reds rallied from a four-run deficit to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 11-7 on Wednesday night. “The more you do things, and the more you do them right, and the more you believe it, that’s what it’s all about,” Baker said. “Gutsy call by Dusty,” said Laynce Nix, whose two-run double in the ninth capped the comeback. Heisey dropped his bunt down the third base line and beat the throw to first base. He eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Paul Janish, and the Reds, trailing 7-3 in the top of the eighth, struck for eight runs in the eighth and ninth. Brewers 3, Cardinals 2: Randy Wolf pitched three-hit ball into the ninth inning and Milwaukee handed Adam Wainwright his first home loss of the season. Trevor Hoffman struck out Brendan Ryan with the bases loaded to earn his 598th career save. Hoffman came in after the Cardinals pushed across a pair of runs in the ninth. “I don’t care if it’s Wainwright or (Chris) Carpenter or (Ubaldo) Jimenez or any of the great pitchers in baseball,” Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said. “We should never be satisfied being held to less than three runs.” Padres 5, Cubs 1: Matt Stairs, taking advantage of a rare outfield start, hit a two-run double and Adrian Gonzalez homered for streaking San Diego. The Cubs (50-71) lost their sixth straight home game and are 4-17 overall since July 27. The announced attendance at Wrigley Field was a season-low 33,267. Braves 3, Nationals 2: Atlanta beat Washington in its final at-bat on Jason Heyward’s run-scoring single in the ninth inning.

Rockies 3, Dodgers 2, 10 innings: Melvin Mora scored the go-ahead run on one of three wild pitches by Octavio Dotel in the 10th inning, and Colorado nailed a runner at the plate for the final out. Mets 3, Astros 2, 14 innings: Jose Reyes matched a season high with four hits and scored on a sacrifice fly by slumping Ike Davis in the 14th inning for New York. Phillies 8, Giants 2: Jimmy Rollins hit a three-run homer and Joe Blanton pitched neatly into the seventh for Philadelphia. Twins 7, White Sox 6: Joe Mauer had four hits, two RBIs and his first regular season home run at Target Field, leading Minnesota past Chicago to increase their season-high lead in the AL Central to five games. Rays 8, Rangers 6: Evan Longoria hit a solo homer and drove in four runs to help Tampa Bay beat Texas, completing a sweep of the three-game series between potential playoff opponents. Yankees 9, Tigers 5: Mark Teixeira homered and Dustin Moseley pitched well enough to overcome the two home runs he gave up in New York’s testy win.
