SECTION A - INTRODUCTION

A.1 Purpose South Australian Institute of Business and Technology (SAIBT) is committed to the delivery of high quality academic outcomes for students through the regular monitoring and assessment of student progress and through the provision of high quality support. This policy sets out the means by which SAIBT meets that commitment of delivery of high quality academic outcomes for students.

A.2 Scope This policy covers all students of the South Australian Institute of Business and Technology (SAIBT).

A.3 Definitions

Academic support program

A series of classes, online exercises or one-on- one activities, supervised by a qualified teacher, to enhance academic skills and/or English proficiency

At risk of making unsatisfactory academic progress

A student who has failed 50% or more of their enrolment in a given study period or fails a course at least twice

Course

A single unit of study that counts towards completion of a program

Intention to Report

Student is advised they are to be reported for unsatisfactory academic progress and will be precluded from the program

Intention to Preclude

Student is advised their place in the program will be discontinued

Program

An approved combination of approved courses in which a student is enrolled

Study period

12 teaching week trimester

Unsatisfactory academic progress

A student who has failed 50% or more of their enrolment in a given study period for a fifth time, fails a required course for a fourth time and does not change their program, or is identified as at risk for a fourth time and fails to satisfactorily complete the academic support program

SECTION B - POLICY STATEMENT

B.1

Principles

SAIBT will monitor, record and assess the progress of each student for the program and courses in which the student is currently enrolled. SAIBT is committed to the implementation of an intervention strategy for any student who is at risk of not meeting satisfactory program progress requirements by offering effective support mechanisms. All students shall be given the best available opportunities to be successful in their chosen area of study.

Policy Monitoring of student progress 1.1

SAIBT will assess students’ academic progress at the end of each study period.

1.2

SAIBT will assign a risk level for students identified as at risk of making unsatisfactory academic progress.

1.3

Risk levels are assessed over the duration of the program and are cumulative – they are not necessarily for consecutive study periods.

1.4

Students identified as at risk of making unsatisfactory progress will be offered counselling and an academic support program will be made available.

Intervention for at risk students There are five stages of intervention for students identified as at risk of making unsatisfactory progress: 2.1

Risk 1: students identified as at risk of making unsatisfactory academic progress for the first time Students will be issued a Risk 1 letter, and  offered counselling, and  be limited to less than a full time study load in the next semester

Risk 2: students identified as at risk of making unsatisfactory academic progress for the second time Students will be issued a Risk 2 letter, and  receive counselling  be limited to less than a full time study load  be invited to enrol in an academic support program

2.3

Risk 3: students identified as at risk of making unsatisfactory academic progress for the third time Students will be issued a Risk 3 letter, and  be blocked from enrolment until they have attended a counselling session  be limited to less than a full time study load  be required to successfully complete an academic support program

Risk 4: students identified as at risk of making unsatisfactory academic progress for the fourth time Students will be issued a Risk 4 letter, and  be blocked from enrolment until they have attended a counselling session  be limited to less than a full time study load  be required to successfully complete an academic support program

Risk 4: students identified as at risk of making unsatisfactory academic progress for the fourth time and who have failed to satisfactorily complete the academic support program will be escalated to Risk 5.

2.6

Risk 5: students who fail 50% of their enrolment in a given study period for a fifth time, fails a required course for a fourth time and does not change their program, or is identified as at risk for a fourth time and fails to satisfactorily complete the academic support program will have unsatisfactory academic progress and:  International students will issued with an Intention to Report  Domestic students will be issued with an Intention to Preclude

Repeating a course 3.1

Risk 3 (course): students who are attempting a course for a third time and have not been identified at risk 3 or above will be issued a Risk 3 (course) letter, and  be blocked from enrolment until they have attended a counselling session  be limited to less than a full time study load  be given an individual academic support program

Risk 4 (course): students who are attempting a course for the fourth time will be issued a Risk 4 (course) letter, and  be blocked from enrolment until they have attended a counselling session  be limited to less than a full time study load  be required to successfully complete an academic support program

Risk 5 (course): students who fail a course after a fourth attempt will be precluded from that course and counselled to change their program. 3.3.1

Appeals 4.1

Students who are precluded from a required course in their program and do not change their program will have unsatisfactory academic progress and:  International students will be issued with an Intention to Report  Domestic students will be issued with an Intention to Preclude

Students who wish to lodge an appeal may do so in accordance with the Student Grievances and Appeals Policy.

Re-admission 5.1

A student who has been precluded from a program may apply for re-admission. Students wanting to re-apply may do so in accordance with the Admissions Policy.
