Denise Scott-Lister, Managing Director We provide a positive tertiary education experience for our STAR and Gateway students which them to continue the journey of lifelong learning. STAR classes provide interactive face to face teaching and learning opportunities. This style of teaching has great success for kinaesthetic learners who benefit most from learning through being able to ‘give it a go’ in a safe environment. Students learning needs and abilities are considered when planning for STAR classes, providing students with a proportionally balanced delivery of practical and theoretical study. Students are kept engaged in learning through field trips and interactive delivery. Our STAR and Gateway programmes are a great way for students to experience tertiary education and to begin study that can lead to a valuable qualification and career. STAR - Equine Academy Equine is a unique but rewarding career choice. Qualifications gained through the study of equine can lead to a multitude of career opportunities nationally and abroad. Wanganui Tutor Sonya Glennie is renowned for her equine expertise and works closely with Training For You to provide a top class equine academy. Sonya will be teaching units from the National Certificate in Equine, Introductory Skills, Level 2. About Sonya Glennie Sonya is an NZ Thoroughbred Racing registered trainer as well as a Sporthorse trainer, coach and competitor. She has won five NZ National Sporthorse titles and has also trained many national title winners. Sonya holds the National Certificate in Adult Literacy and Numeracy Education, Level 5 and is a registered human, equine and canine Bowen Technician. Do you want an Equine Academy for your school? Classes Classes are held each Thursday from 9am – 3pm. Students will study theory in the classroom and practical activities will be held at Sonya’s farm. Horses provided are suitable for beginner students, or students may elect to bring their own horse. Return transport from Training For You to the farm is provided.

What is covered during classes? Units are selected from the National Certificate in Equine, Introductory Skills, Level 2.

Students will be able to: prepare items in a grooming kit and the horse for grooming; groom the horse in a manner appropriate for the activity; clean and oil the horse's feet, and check for health status; and care for a grooming kit. Students will be able to: muck out a stable to remove all traces of soiled bedding, faeces, and urine, and identify reasons for maintaining a well banked muck heap and a clean stable; demonstrate knowledge of stable bedding, and replace and arrange stable bedding; and clean stable equipment and surrounds. People credited with this unit standard are able to: identify, catch, and restrain the horse; prepare the horse for gearing up; fit gear in preparation for exercise, according to supervisor's or trainer's instructions; fit protection to the lower leg of the horse; and attend to post-exercise activities People credited with this unit standard are able to: identify parts of, disassemble, and inspect saddlery; and clean, reassemble, and store saddlery. People credited with this unit standard are able to: mount and dismount from a horse; ride a horse through the basic school movements demonstrating the use of aids; and maintain riding etiquette. People credited with this unit standard are able to: wash the horse; trim the horse's tail and areas of long hair, and pull the mane and forelock; plait the mane and present the horse's tail; finish the horse to enhance its general appearance; and remove plaits and brush out tail. People credited with this unit standard are able to: tack up a horse with gear for lunging; lead the horse to a designated area for lunging, and lunge the horse; and remove gear after lunging.

People credited with this unit standard are able to: analyse raw horse feeds; analyse commercially prepared horse feeds; prepare a stable for a horse; prepare and settle a horse in a stable; and demonstrate knowledge of operating feed processing machinery.

1658 – Demonstrate knowledge of the nature and requirements of a career in the equine industry

People credited with this unit standard are able to describe: the career opportunities in the New Zealand equine industry; the industry training structures and qualifications; further training opportunities in the equine industry; and describe how a work diary is used as a recording tool in the equine industry.

People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of the anatomy of horses; demonstrate knowledge of the life cycle of internal and external parasites, their effect on horses' health, and implementing preventative health measures; recognise signs of good health and ill health in horses, and report suspected ill health; identify and report common horse ailments; and Identify and report lameness in horses. People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of paddock maintenance to obtain optimum feeding potential, and provide supplementary feeding when pasture fails to meet horses' requirements; maintain paddock facilities to ensure safety and working efficiency; and manage horses in a paddock.

People credited with this unit standard are able to: identify plants, grasses, and trees which are potentially poisonous to horses, and recognise symptoms of poisoning; and describe methods of removal, avoidance, and/or treatment of potentially poisonous plants, grasses, and trees.

People credited with this unit standard are able to: check and prepare the vehicle to ensure it is safe, clean, and ready for the horse to enter; pack the vehicle with requirements for the duration of the event, as instructed by the supervisor; prepare the horse with safety gear ready for travel, and attend to the horse's requirements; load the horse on a float or a truck in preparation for travel, and describe methods for loading difficult horses; unload the horse from a float or a truck, and describe the reasons for methodical unloading procedure; and attend to immediate post travel activities relating to horse and vehicle.

Should students wish to complete the whole National Certificate in Equine, Introductory Stable Skills, Level 2 qualification over a two year period, will need to complete the following compulsory standards, 10780, 12383, 497 and 64, plus a minimum of 25 credits from Elective 2 – Work and Life Skills. Please refer to NZQA qualification overview 0215 for details.

Fees Price on enquiry. Fees include all materials, face to face teaching, marking, transport for field trips and course supplies. Students who join later in the year will be invoiced prorate. Invoices are generated at the time of enrolment. A minimum of eight students must be maintained for the academy to run throughout the year.

What is provided to schools? End of Term Reporting Schools are provided with a report at the end of each term written by the course tutor. Individual reports are created for each student which outline the students’ performance in the class, comments about their participation and comprehension, which units they are working on, which units are complete and which units are remaining. End of Year Reporting An end of year report summarising students’ progress and unit completion is provided to each school. Schools are required to report the results to NZQA. Attendance The tutor will provide an email or phone call at morning tea each Wednesday advising of any absences. An email will also be provided at the end of each day confirming that day’s attendance.

Career / Further Study Students can progress onto further study with Training For You. STAR - Early Childhood Education Early childhood education (ECE) is a great career choice. Qualifications gained through the study of early childhood education can lead to a multitude of career opportunities both nationally and abroad.

Classes Classes are held one day per week, 9am – 3pm. Students will study theory and undertake practical activities in the classroom and through field trips.

Early childhood centre visits and guest speakers keep students interested in the subjects they are working on. Students are also encouraged to make resources where possible such as play dough and slime recipes which can provide a break from heavily theoretical topics and make learning interesting and interactive. Training For You has a long standing record for ECE STAR students transitioning onto our campus course to complete their qualification. Many of these students have carried on to university study.

Students are able to describe the basic needs of children in an ECE service and the environmental influences on the provision of basic needs of a child in an ECE service.

Students are able to describe: attachment behaviours and patterns of behaviour of children in an ECE service; and techniques for strengthening relationships between adults and a child through short-term separation.

Students are able to describe: transition situations where children require settling in an ECE service; and strategies for assisting whanau/family and a child through transition situations in an ECE service.

Students are able to: describe the value of play to the development and learning of children in an ECE service; create play resources for children in an ECE service; and use one of the play resources with a child or children in an ECE service and evaluate the resource.

Students are able to: demonstrate knowledge of age-related food requirements relevant to children in an ECE service; plan nutritious meals for a toddler or a young child in accordance with food and nutrition guidelines; and prepare and serve a meal for the child.

Students are able to explain the purpose, aspirations, structure, and relevance of the New Zealand Early Childhood Curriculum, Te Whariki. This unit standard is an introduction to education and care of children in an ECE service.

Students are able to: demonstrate knowledge of whanau/family diversity in Aotearoa/New Zealand; and demonstrate knowledge of effective communication with diverse whanau/family in an ECE service.

Students are able to describe strategies that help to develop relationships with children in an ECE service, and use and evaluate strategies to develop reciprocal and responsive relationships with a child in an ECE service.

Students are able to, in an ECE service: demonstrate knowledge of observations of a child; plan an observation of a child; and observe a child, document the observation, and evaluate outcomes of the observation.

Career / Further Study Should students wish to complete the national certificate they can progress onto one of two Training For You courses:  Working with Children – delivered on campus, Monday – Friday, 9am – 3pm, free for youth aged 16 or 17 and a travel allowance is provided (up to $75 per student per week depending on the students usual place of residence)  National Certificate in Early Childhood Education, Level 3 – delivered on campus, study at your own pace, available nationwide, fees apply. Further study can also include:  New Zealand Certificate in Nanny Education, Level 5  National Certificate in Early Childhood Education and Care, Level 5  Bachelor of Education, Early Childhood Teaching, Level 7 Career options can include - after school care, nannying locally, nannying internationally, work as a qualified early childhood education teacher.
