Board of Directors News School District Endorsements from the Chamber Board of Directors

The Independence Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce endorsement of both the Independence School District and the Fort Osage School District bond issues on the April 4th, 2017, ballot. The Independence Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors voted unanimously to support the enhancements and 67 cent operating levy increase to offset losses in revenue, and to approve the $11,370,000 bond issue to facility improvements throughout the Fort Osage district at the February Board of Directors Meeting.

March 2 15400 E 34th St S, Independence, MO 64055

In March the Board of Directors also voted unanimously to support the no tax increase bond issue for facility enhancements of $38 million in the Independence School District. The Independence Chamber of Commerce recognizes the important role education plays in building a strong community. With a belief that well funded schools develop our future workforce. The Independence Chamber of Commerce knows that an investment in our schools is an investment in the future of Independence. We urge the residents of Independence to vote in favor of these issues on April 4th, 2017.

Legislative Briefing

Six representatives from Eastern Jackson County attended the legislative briefing on Friday, March 10, 2017, and reported on many topics that they are currently working on such as insurance auto limits, insurance industry standards to be regulated, pay raises for state and courthouse employees, charter school bill, externships for teachers and utility rate increases. One hot topic of discussion was the cell towers that are making an appearance all over the city. Brad Smith of Drumm Farm mentioned that cell towers are making a sudden appearance and are being erected without notice or communication to property owners. Mr. Smith added that recently a cell tower was installed in front of the Drumm Farm historic site.

The LEAD 2017 class started the day off visiting the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant for a tour of the facility. Guest speaker, Mike Calvert from the Heritage Commission spoke about the history of Lake City. The group then toured the new Independence Power & Light Utilities building located on 23rd Street. Followed by a tour of Corporate Copy Print and Top Hat Winery on the Independence Square.
