WELCOME FROM THE COLLEGE DIRECTOR/PRINCIPAL

I am delighted you are interested in studying at BCUIC and Birmingham City University. BCUIC is first and foremost firmly rooted in the city of Birmingham – a vibrant metropolis situated in the very centre of the UK. This prime position is further strengthened by the city’s cultural diversity, which reflects the College’s own unique blend of nationalities. Also integral to BCUIC’s character is its flexibility. Every student who passes through our doors has differing motivations and ambitions, and our offer of an alternative pathway to

Birmingham City University – including three entry points throughout the year – can be moulded to varying individual circumstances. We understand that progressing to university is a significant transition – made particularly daunting in a brand-new country – which is why we are dedicated to helping each and every student grow in both confidence and academic ability through the provision of a safe, nurturing environment.

I look forward to welcoming you to BCUIC very soon.

1. HALLS OF RESIDENCE Living in halls of residence is a great option if you would like to experience the ‘family’ feel of student accommodation. You would be living in a large building with other students and sharing communal facilities.

There are two options within halls of residence, depending on your preferred level of privacy. You can share kitchen facilities with others, but have your own bedroom and bathroom; or you can choose to have your own kitchen facilities within a studio apartment and share only laundry facilities and a common room.

I’ve been a Wolverhampton City Councillor since 1998 and am a Cabinet Member for City Economy.

I’ve previously lectured in telecommunication science and networking at the University of Bedfordshire and the University of Ilorin in Nigeria, and I’m currently studying for my PhD. My research focus is on securing cellular-based IoT (Internet of Things) communication networks, such as LTE-V2X and NB-IoT.

Teaches on pathways to Law

Teaches on pathways to Art and Design

I qualified as a nurse after leaving school, and then studied science at university before working for 15 years as an industrial chemist. I then did a conversion course and chose the barrister route. I had tenancy in chambers in Portsmouth between 2004 and 2013, and then became a direct access barrister.

As well as teaching at BCUIC, I run my own jewellery-making business – working with silver and semi-precious stones. I travel round the UK, exhibiting and selling my work, and I also sell online to a global market.

Class sizes are small in BCUIC so you get lots of contact time with the tutors, and the tutors are very helpful and friendly – they explain everything.

BCUIC promotes independent learning, encouraging us to research and explore our own ideas, which is brilliant. It not only prepares you for university, but also for after you graduate and gain employment. The facilities at BCUIC are great too – it has everything you need!

CHARTERED ACCOUNTANT

SOFTWARE DEVELOPER

BSc (Hons) Accounting and Finance

BSc (Hons) Computer Science

NUMAN ASIF, PAKISTAN

I chose to study at Birmingham City University because I want to get the ACCA qualifications, and the Accounting course offers the maximum number of exemptions. I also loved the sound of Birmingham – it’s such a multicultural city. My cousins studied here and told me how great it was! I had an amazing experience at BCUIC. Student Services were very helpful and responsive; any problems I had were immediately addressed. It was easy to mix with the other nationalities too and make friends. I was even elected as a member of BCUIC’s student council! We went on some really good trips – to Drayton Manor Theme Park and shopping at the designer outlet Bicester Village in Oxford. I had a fantastic time!

CLAUDIO CONCEICAO, ANGOLA

I always wanted to come to Birmingham. It’s the second biggest city in the UK and a good central location – you can easily get down to London. The resources available at BCUIC are excellent. The campus is equipped with Apple Mac suites, and the tutors are very knowledgeable and friendly. The computer facilities at Millennium Point – on the City Centre Campus – are also really impressive. Everything at BCUIC was great. It’s a safe, secure campus and I was able to make friends easily because all the different nationalities mixed well together. It was sweet!

JEWELLERY DESIGNER

ARCHITECT

JADE ZHAO, CHINA

MAYAR EL-SAYED, KUWAIT

I came to study here because Birmingham has the largest jewellery school in Europe.

BCUIC’s flexible entry requirements allowed me to access the degree I wanted to study. I felt so welcomed by staff when I arrived, and it was easy to settle in and make friends. Everyone was new and in the same situation, so we discovered Birmingham together!

BA (Hons) Jewellery and Objects

BA (Hons) Architecture

I really enjoyed using all the industry-standard machinery in the BCUIC workshops, and the independent study gave us the creative freedom to express our own ideas. I had no art and design knowledge at all before I came to BCUIC, but now I feel prepared for my degree. The tutors were nice, the campus was green, and it was easy to mix with everyone and make friends. I’d advise new students to go to Birmingham’s galleries and exhibitions, and explore as much as you can! After I graduate I’d like to do a Master’s degree, obtain the professional silversmithing qualifications and then open up my own jewellery studio.

Birmingham is similar to London but it’s more central, so it’s easier to access other places – like Oxford or Manchester. My Foundation course at BCUIC gave me lots of creative freedom and allowed me to experiment with different media. The self-directed study also prepared me really well for my studies at the University. Now I’ve started my first year, I feel a lot more confident than my classmates because I’ve had a head-start at BCUIC!
