Subaru Turbo Blanket Instructions Thank you for your purchase of your PTP turbo blanket!    This  is  a  short  ‘how‐to’  instruction  guide  for  the  installation  of  your  Subaru  Turbo  Blanket.  Before  getting  started,  make  sure  that  you  have  basic  safety  gear.  Safety  glasses  and  a  set  of  latex  gloves  are  recommended.  Also,  the  engine  should  be  cold  before beginning this procedure. Refer to the Subaru WRX factory shop manual for any  recommendations regarding working under the hood.    Suggested tools: You will need a 10mm socket, a ratcheting wrench, and a set of needle  nose  pliers  (or  equivalent  tool  to  grab  wire).  Shown  in  the  photo  below  is  a  ¼”  drive  tool, one regular socket, one deep socket, and a set of needle nose pliers. The stainless  steel wire, which is included with the turbo blanket, is also shown.   

      Inside your shipment will be the turbo blanket and stainless steel wire needed to secure  your turbo blanket in place.

    1. To begin, you must locate the turbocharger under the hood. The turbo is located on  the passenger side underneath the top mount intercooler (TMIC).

2. The turbocharger is located under the OEM heat shield shown above. The heat shield  is  attached by  eight,  10mm  bolts.  Removal  of  the  TMIC  is  not  necessary  to  access  the  bolts required for removal, but may speed up the installation of your blanket. Removal  of the TMIC will not be covered in this guide. After removing the eight bolts, remove the  heat shield from the engine bay. The photos shown below of the OEM heat shield will  give you a good idea of the location of the bolts.

3. Your turbocharger should be clearly visible now, as shown in the photo below. Your  turbo blanket will cover the turbocharger, making direct contact with the turbocharger  casing. The top side of the blanket is the side with the riveted plate on it. The contoured  end of the blanket is for the wastegate actuator arm. The blanket is made so that there  is no interference with the arm during operation.   

 

 

    4.  Attachment  of  the  stainless  steel  wire  to  the  rivets  on  the  non‐contoured  (narrow)  end of the blanket is the next step. Attaching the wire to both rivets using a figure eight  method works well, as shown in the photos below. The bottom photo below shows the  blanket folded in the shape of a “U.” This should give you an idea of how the blanket sits  on the turbo.

      5. Next, it is time to begin fitting your blanket over and around the turbocharger. Feed  the end of the blanket with the wire (the narrow end) down around the backside of the  turbo.  Bending  the  wire  so  that  you  can  grab  it  with  your  pliers  really  helps  with  the  installation. Once you have a hold of the wire, you can move the blanket into position by  pulling on the wire while feeding the blanket downward.

  Tuck the blanket under the wastegate actuator arm while moving the blanket into place.

    6. Tie the stainless steel wire around the rivets in the same manner as on the other end  of  the  blanket.  Make  sure  the  blanket  fits  snugly  over  the  turbocharger.  This  is  the  simplest method of attaching the blanket to a turbocharger that is currently installed on  a  vehicle.  If  installed  correctly,  the  turbo  blanket  should  stay  in  place  indefinitely  and  should be entirely maintenance free. The finished installation should look similar to the  photo below.
