Makey said that this time of year, he and the rest of the AthletiCo team enjoy seeing so many walkers and runners about town and especially at the ‘Firecracker 5k’ and at ‘Ravinia Fun Walk and Run’ events. “Many of our friends stop by for post-race stretching and conversation,” Makey explained.

AthletiCo Located in the same “healthy plaza” as Equinox Highland Park and Soul2Sole Dance, AthletiCo (799 Central Avenue) is in its fourth year as a leader in physical therapy services in Chicagoland. “In addition to orthopedic physical therapy services, our Highland Park facility provides pediatric physical therapy, women’s health therapy, and workplace rehabilitation,“ points out Kevin Makey, who is both a physical therapist and the facility manager at the local AthletiCo. “We just enjoyed another fantastic season, interacting with and treating staff members and students from Highland Park High School and from area middle and elementary schools,” he said.

“While we always hope everyone has a safe and injury-free summer, we know that accidents can happen,” he said. “We are always prepared to assist with formal physical therapy, and we offer a complimentary 30-minute injury screening that most insurance plans will accept. Anyone who is unsure about what the next step might be for pain or continuing aches should benefit from our comfortable facilities and experienced staff,” Makey recommended. allow for unforgettable military ceremonies either inside the funeral home, or at the cemetery.

A funeral home is not something one wants to think about, but when the need for one occurs, Kelley & Spalding (1787 Deerfield Road) can be a comfort.

Kelley & Spalding does no advertising, unlike many funeral homes, and relies solely on word of mouth. Kelley & Spalding can be reached at 847-8314260, or online at through their website at www.kelleyspaldingfuneralhome.com.

Third generation funeral home directors Dean and Jim Spalding calmly and professionally can handle the service as well as the cemetery arrangements or cremation details. The Spaldings also will either notify the newspapers for you, or they will help you compose a death notice or obituary, and they’ll make sure it promptly gets to the publication you select.

Franco & Pino Hairstyling for Men The year was 1971. Two brothers, Franco and Pino Cisternino, opened a barber shop at 1820 Second Street in downtown Highland Park. They offered men’s haircuts, styling, and shaving. Together they built a business based on great service, great prices, and great customer relationships. The business landscape in Highland Park has changed over the years, but this community institution, still in its original location, remains much as it was 40-plus years ago.

Kelley & Spalding, which was established in 1880, has held a membership in the National Funeral Directors Association since the group was first established, and they’re also members of the Cremation Association of North America. “Dino”, as Dean’s friends call him, emphasizes that Kelley & Spalding can gently guide even the most inexperienced through the process. They specialize in all religious denominations, and their close relationship with the Navy at Great Lakes and with the Army at Ft. Sheridan,

By Wes Wenk

One of the oldest businesses in Highland Park, the Cisterninos’ shop is a warm, welcoming place for customers to come for a professional haircut and shave, friendly advice, relaxation, old-fashioned humor, and sports on the TV. Philanthropy in both dollars and deeds is a core value of the Cisternino family. They are known for consistently supporting multiple organizations and individuals over the years. If you know the brothers, you know they’re good people, so stop by to congratulate them on 43 years of business in Highland Park. But if you have never been to their shop, call 847-432-6553 to schedule an appointment. You’ll get a terrific haircut, and your visit could be the beginning of a wonderful relationship with these two fabulous Highland Parkers.

right to the streets of downtown! Yes, the annual Highland Park Sidewalk Sale soon will be open for business. Sponsored by the Highland Park Chamber of Commerce, Sidewalk Sale Days will take place on Port Clinton Square, Renaissance Place plaza, and all the streets of downtown including: Central Avenue, First and Second Streets, St. Johns Avenue, Sheridan Road, and Elm Place. Featured will be great prices on brand-name clothing, jewelry, shoes, accessories, home décor, and gifts. Everybody’s “Uncle Dan”, Brent Weiss, (Uncle Dan’s, 621 Central Avenue) has been a part of the Sidewalk Sale since the 1970s, and he feels it’s a great event for Highland Parkers. “You get the true professionals on Thursday morning, the first day of the sale, who zero in on finding the best possible deals right away. On Saturday, you begin to get the families shopping together, and on Sunday (there are) some truly incredible bargains.” “One of the secrets to Sidewalk Sale, and successful retail ventures in general, is ‘FOMO’ (Fear of Missing Out),” said Weiss.

community until the store closed in 2000, after more than 80 years. A fourth generation Fell Family salesman, John’s son Jacob used to set up a lemonade stand outside the store on sweltering Sidewalk Sale days, and one year he took in more than $3,000 in cold drink sales! On rainy Sales days, the Fell boys would buy a bunch of inexpensive compact umbrellas and quickly resell them on the street to the determined “all-weather” bargain hunters.

Sheryl Oberman, owner of The Stationery Station

Sheryl Oberman, owner of The Stationery Station (600 Central Avenue, Suite 160) at Port Clinton Square, feels the Sidewalk Sale is “a few days of real fun, enjoying the customers, and showing people that we’re happy to be a part of this vibrant town!” A veteran of multiple Sidewalk Sales, Oberman laughed when she recalled, “Some people invariably fight over what they see the other shoppers picking out!” Oberman bought her staff Stationery Station t-shirts one year, causing people to ask if hers was a new store in town. But, after 37 years in business, she said the exposure from participating at the Sale is very healthy for stores in the area, and puts them “on the map” for those who aren’t yet customers. Sharon Nudell, of the women’s clothing shop Sharin’ Unlimited, (1510 Old Deerfield Road, Suite 106) said her major concern after participating in about 15 Sidewalk Sales, is weather. One rainy, hot year she set up see-through plastic tents, but anyone who walked into one for any length of time was overcome

with the intense heat. So to her, the obvious solution was to add a small plastic wading pool in front of the tents! Nudell reported “We had our staff standing with their feet in the pool, staying cool. But many people brought their dogs to the Sale and soon they were using it as a giant water bowl, so we figured we had better get out of the pool with all that dog drool building up!” Nudell added that, all kidding aside, participating in the Sale “really does give something back to the town, as (residents) have supported us so nicely all these years.” That sentiment has held true since the beginning of Sidewalk Sale. “It was fun to go ‘back in time’ and reminisce with John and Happy Fell about their memories of Sidewalk Sale,” said Chamber Executive Director Ginny Glasner.

“They braved–or defied–weather issues in the most creative ways, too.” “We didn’t embrace Sidewalk Sale right away, but by the second or third year, it became a whole lot of fun,” John Fell pointed out. Fell recalled, “I’ll never forget one year when we combined inventory from our Winnetka and Highland Park stores, and we advertised the Sale like crazy ahead of time. ‘that’s W. Clement Stone!’ I was just a kid in my 20s then, and I asked my uncle why a famous millionaire would bother sifting through our stuff for bargains, and he told me, “That’s how a lot of rich people stay rich!” “There is no question that we purchased additional inventory those years, with the Sidewalk Sale in mind,” John added. “But most of all, my memories of 25 years participating in Sidewalk Sale start with being able to see most of Highland Park throughout the weekend, and visiting and joking with everybody we knew as we mingled through the crowd in our new Fell Company Sidewalk Sale t-shirts every year. We would select the color of the shirts months earlier. Looking back now after all these years, I think the most fun we had at the Fell Company was with the Sidewalk Sale. In most years we made some money, but we met so many new friends and customers, that it would have been worthwhile regardless. I think our participation every year really made us part of the community.”

Sidewalk SALE! Fell remembers that prior to the Sidewalk Sale, there was an event called “Highland Park Dollar Days.” His cousin, Harold “Happy” Fell, reports “during Dollar Days, my dad “Red” Fell would greet the crowds at the stroke of 9 o’clock. Many of them had been waiting quite a while for the doors to open. There were fewer merchants then, but Jim Garnett, Glen Cobey, and the owner of Chestnut Courts would all participate. And later, as Dollar Days evolved into the Sidewalk Sale, so many of the same shoppers would show up every year. Some of them would come into the store a few days before the Sidewalk Sale and tell us that they had to go out of town during the weekend, so they would ask for an early glimpse of the merchandise that was headed for the street. These were savvy shoppers, believe me! They knew they could often get a $100 polo shirt for $10,” he said.

“To some of them, it was a sort of a game, to grab some bargains before everybody else could. Even many of the wealthiest people in town enjoyed it. Others would gather up sale items and bring them down to the inner city, which was nice,” he added. “So there was opportunity for additional sales, but most important, it brought us together with so many of our customers, even just to talk and tell stories.” Roger Wolff, longtime owner of the Bootery (483 Cental Avenue), said, “Our Sidewalk Sale has become an event in and of itself. We always have customers who can’t wait for the first day of the sale because the selection is the best and our prices are really good.”

Wolff continued, “I do remember our first Sidewalk Sale in 1978. We had no clue as to what Sidewalk Sale was all about. We had been open only a few weeks that year, and we put out just a couple of racks of merchandise, but when they sold immediately, and I saw the crowds that our neighbor the Fell Company was attracting, we quickly called our sister store in Lake Forest to get more merchandise fast! We added several more racks, and I knew that the next year we would be better prepared.”

“The Fells knew how to run a Sidewalk Sale, and they completely filled the sidewalk in front of their store, which certainly made sense. As my sale grew, I had such a small storefront, that I kept trying to steal some space from the Fells every year. It was always a cat and mouse game for me, trying to squeeze a little more room for just one more table, and at the same time the Fells would try to maintain their rightful space! That said, John and Happy Fell were always very accommodating.”

Admission to the Sale is free. Ample parking is available in the public garages at Port Clinton and Renaissance Place; in addition there are on-street parking spaces, parking decks, and several lots within the downtown area.

In a letter to the Chamber of Commerce on the occasion of its 100th anniversary, Rhoda Perlman wrote, “I enjoyed being the first woman president of the Highland Park Chamber of Commerce from 1974 to 1975. One of my best memories was when I originated the Sidewalk Sale in Highland Park. Many of the businesses had wanted an event such as this for years…I made a motion (to the City) that Highland Park begin to add sidewalk sales. Everyone heartily agreed…I’m delighted that this brings so many shoppers to our town! My sincere hope for every Chamber participant and member is to think about what a wonderful town we work in, and how we can continue to make this the best place for businesses to want to come here.” Highland Park’s Sidewalk Sale now has been a 40-year success. The steady list of participating stores, plus the thousands of returning shoppers, prove that this event is a good idea for the city, for the stores, and for smart shoppers. SUMMER 2013

Highland Park

Bella Via Check out Bella Via any summer night and you’ll probably find diners sitting outside around umbrella tables on the street-side patio and the restaurant’s backyard, enjoying a great evening out in Highland Park. A full-service traditional Italian restaurant, Bella Via has been on Second Street for just over 16 years, serving Southern Italian chicken, veal, fish, eggplant and pasta dishes. Pizza Margherita is on the dinner menu as an appetizer, but most of Bella Via’s pizza business comes from carryout and delivery. Owner Maurizio LoBosco, who also serves as chef, said that everything that goes into his restaurant’s pizzas is made from scratch. “We make the dough and the sauce, and all ingredients are fresh,” he said. “We even grind our own sausage.”

Maurizio LoBosco

Growing up in Italy, LoBosco especially enjoyed preparing and sharing meals with his family. “For Italians, cooking is a social event,” he said. That sense of community he experienced as a child is one of the reasons he enjoys being a part of our town. “I love the whole area, the environment, and my wonderful downtown Highland Park location,” he said. 16

Deep dish or thin crust? Cheese or the whole works? Gluten-free or “gluten-y”? In Highland Park, the pie’s got no limit!

Il Forno’s Pizzeria Il Forno has been tossing up great thin and thick crust pizza for more than 50 years, first in Chicago, then on Roger Williams Avenue in Ravinia, and in its present location on Old Elm Road since 1972. Mike Rudolph, who started working at the pizzeria in 1974, bought the business in 1986.

Owner Maurizio LoBosco, who also serves as chef, said that everything that goes into his restaurant’s pizzas is made from scratch. “We make the dough and the sauce, and all ingredients are fresh,” he said. “We even grind our own sausage.” Mike Rudolph

“We’ve been using the same pizza sauce recipe that founder Bruno Pupolo created in the 1950s,” he said, but noted a trend in pizza toppings that reflects how tastes have changed over the years: “Our customers are asking for more gourmet toppings. In response, we’ve added unique items like hot giardinera peppers, eggplant, artichoke, pineapple, fresh tomatoes, and fresh garlic.” Rudolph loves being a part of the Highland Park community. “I’m proud to say we’re now serving our third generation of families. It’s thrilling to see grandparents bring in their grandchildren to enjoy the same great pizza that they did when they were kids.”

All of Ravinia BBQ & Grill’s pizza sauces are made from scratch, said the restaurant’s owner Bunnie Mesirow. Under that yummy sauce on their specialty BBQ Chicken Pizza is a thin, cracker-like crust with cheddar and mozzarella cheeses, cilantro, barbecue chicken, onion, and sweet barbecue sauce. “As a bonus, the thin crust makes the pizza a little lower in calories,” she added. When it comes to pizza, the customer is always right. “Some of our customers order their pizza without cheese, and some without sauce,” Mesirow said, adding that another option is to dial the spiciness of a pizza way up by adding jalapeno peppers. 20

North Shore Health Center Childhood obesity continues to be a focus of the North Shore Health Center, which has offered comprehensive, high quality healthcare in the area for eight years.

Dr. Tahira Juiris treats a patient

Today more than 21 percent of children in Illinois are obese, the fourth worst rate in the nation. Childhood obesity is associated with serious health conditions including diabetes, fatty liver, and an increased risk of cardiac disease. The good news for the Highland Park area is that the North Shore Health Center offers health and wellness programs specifically for obese pediatric patients. The Health Center promotes increased physical

activity through joint programming with the Park District of Highland Park. “We treat each of our patients as an individual with a personal health plan” says Dr. Guzman, a pediatrician at the Health Center. Pediatricians at the Center work with both the parents and their child to plan intervention strategies. Pediatric patients in a weightreduction program also participate in one-on-one counseling sessions with the registered dietitian to help them establish and work toward healthy eating habits. “The best strategy is to improve the eating habits and physical activity routines of the entire family. Parents and caregivers play a vital role in a child’s lifestyle. It is important they have access to resources and tools so they can develop these healthy habits. We want them to reduce “screen time” for the entire family,” said Anne Wagner, Clinic Coordinator at the Health Center.

Just this past spring 20 families participated in the We Can!/CATCH program offered at the North Shore Health Center. We Can! (Ways to Enhance Children’s Activity & Nutrition) is designed to give parents a way to help children, 8 to 13 years of age, stay at a healthy weight and CATCH is designed to encourage heart-healthy behavior in children. Each year more than 4,500 area residents are making the North Shore Health Center their medical home. The Center’s physicians, who are available Monday through Saturday, have specialties that include Family Practice, Pediatrics, and Internal Medicine. In addition, there are full Dental services available five days a week, and preventative screening. The Health Center utilizes Community Health Workers (Promotoras) to reach out to various community members who may have specific health needs that require individualized education or support. The Women’s Health program is partnered with NorthShore University HealthSystem to provide state-of-the-art care. The Health Center offers family planning services and a comprehensive prenatalpostpartum program. Other services

include nutrition counseling and WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children). Additionally, we offer full-spectrum Pediatric services.

Financial support by local individuals and organizations helped create the North Shore Health Center and today community member donations and a grant from the Healthcare Foundation of Highland Park continues to support operations.

A key community partner is the non-for-profit Friends for Health organization. Thanks to the grant through the Healthcare Foundation of Highland Park, Friends for Health augments care at the Health Center by providing help with specialty care, dental care, and medication assistance. It supports a diabetes program that includes education and prevention activities such as community garden opportunities, diabetes self-management classes, and exercise and fitness options through cooperative programming with the Recreation Center of Highland Park and the Nuestro Center in Highwood. The Health Center continues to develop partnerships with local schools, churches, and other service agencies to bring healthcare programs to the community in general.

Following the winter we just had, summer couldn’t have come fast enough. After being cooped up by the polar vortex through an unusually cold spring (remember how it snowed on April 15?), now is the time to open the windows and to take a break outdoors. But there is one unsung hero of winter that doesn’t get a summer break: your furnace. Just because the cold has stopped doesn’t mean your furnace has. A furnace has a lot of small components that should be taken apart and cleaned to keep everything running smoothly. Aside from a thorough cleaning, having your furnace inspected by a professional could also identify hidden safety issues. For example, a certified service technician will be able to check the ignition sequence and make sure there are not any dangerous chimney issues lurking.

• How old is your furnace? The average life span of a furnace is in the 15-20 year range. Once you hit this threshold, it is time to seriously consider replacement. • Does your furnace need a major repair? • What is the net cost of replacing your furnace? A lot of times people only consider a new furnace’s price tag. The truth is, there are a lot of financial considerations that should be taken into account. Does your current furnace need an expensive repair to keep working? Are there manufacturer, utility, or tax incentives available if you decide to upgrade? How much money will a new furnace save on utilities? Answers to these questions can often add up to thousands of dollars that would bring the net cost of replacement down much lower than you might expect.

Eventually you will need to decide if it’s time to replace your furnace. There are a number of things to consider when making this decision:

One of the most important things to tend to is your furnace’s air filter. Filters come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but one thing they all have in common is that they need to be cleaned or replaced regularly. A plugged air filter can lead to unnecessary breakdowns and costly repairs.

is near the end of its expected life. It could be argued, for example, that it’s not really worth $500 to repair a furnace that’s at the end of its lifespan.

Repair Vs. Replacement

Regular Servicing

Monitoring air filters is an easy task for homeowners, but there are some jobs that should only be performed by a professional. Having a reputable service company perform regular maintenance on your furnace will not only help avoid unneeded service calls, but also keep your furnace running as efficiently as possible. Air throughout your house is circulated through your furnace and, no matter how clean your house is, your furnace will collect dust. After the record setting winter we just had, your furnace’s motor worked double time and passed a lot of air and dust through it.

The Highland Park Chamber of Commerce honored twenty-four exceptional HPHS seniors at the 49th Annual Student Honor Dinner, held on April 30. These students were selected by their high school counselors, teachers, coaches, and club sponsors, not only for their achievements in academics, community service, and extra-curricular activities, but also for their character. The Chamber’s long history of recognizing high school students began in 1965 by then Chamber President Dr. William S. Bradford. As a student in high school, Dr. Bradford received an honor, which in later years inspired him to create the Student Honor Program. “Dr. Bradford recalled the impact his own award had on his education, career, and commitment to community service,” said Chamber Executive Director Ginny A. Glasner. “The Chamber continues this recognition, in the hope that it will have a similar impact on the lives of the students honored.” 28

For example, “We order pizza from Piero’s for our monthly meetings, and we go to Ravinia BBQ for team dinners,” Galatte said, adding “We also like to order delicious treats from Baker Boys.” Design Quartet is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The group is open evenings and Saturdays by appointment. 595 Roger Williams Avenue designquartetatravinia.com

HPHS Alum Has

Focus on Science Highland Park has always been known for its passion for the arts. The Port Clinton Art Festival attracts more than 250,000 visitors each summer; The Art Center-Highland Park offers over 400 classes and hosts 20 exhibits annually; The Music Theatre Company is known for its brilliant productions of classics, new works, and musical experiments; and, for more than 50 years, Highland Park High School’s “Focus on the Arts” has introduced countless students to a wide range of artistic expression, including music, film and live theatre. HPHS alum Ben Farcy, however, stresses the importance of focusing not just on the arts, but on science too. In fact, Ben might just be the first “Giant” on Mars! The 23-year-old son of Leslie and Philippe Farcy of Highland Park, Ben earned his B.S. at Indiana University in just three years. He is currently working on his Masters in Geology at Southern Illinois University, and he’s under consideration for four different NASA scholarships. Two of them are at the Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, one at Johns Hopkins University, and another in Spain. What began as an interest in science early in his career at HPHS broadened into a passion by the time Ben was a senior. Ben said that science teacher Howard Hill told his class, “I want you all to get an ‘A’, but more importantly, I just want you guys to ‘get’ it”, and apparently Ben got it.

Starting in 2024, the group will start flying Mars fans one-way to the planet. Ben, understandably, admits that is he aiming for a round-trip mission! As any kind of manned trip to Mars is not in the immediate future, Ben got his “space fix” recently by attending the Lunar Planetary Society Convention in Houston. He hopes to meet soon with John Grunsfeld, a 1976 graduate of HPHS and a veteran of five Space Shuttle flights. A dream of Ben’s is to also meet Apollo 13 Captain and national hero, Jim Lovell. His former teacher Howard Hill said, “Ben ate up every opportunity to learn. He made connections between all units of study, and he eagerly took advantage of chances to get involved. And talk about a focus on science! He always concentrated tremendously on what we experienced in class, in the lab, and in the field. He was, and is, a fantastic and focused kid!” “Science is about learning more about the world around me, even if that means different worlds around me,” said Ben. “The scientific mindset has a deep-seated curiosity that only works if the person keeps asking, ‘Well, why is that?’, and I think I picked that up at HPHS.” Howard Hill would agree!
