DEAR PARENTS, Discipleship is helping people follow Jesus. But as simple as that is, it takes a cooperative effort. Therefore, our mission for our ministries involving kids and teenagers is partnering with parents to reach the next generation with the gospel. We see it as our aim to do everything we can to help every student become a follower of Jesus through the gospel, build multi-generational relationships in the church, and deepen in their connections with the home. To that end, The Square exists to help students follow Jesus on mission by exposing them to truth, connecting them to the church, and pointing them to family.

HOW WE HELP YOU AT HOME This journal is the first of two journals that will be a discipleship tool for a student to use at home and in coordination with their DGroup (the second journal will be available in August). Parents are encouraged to follow along with their own journal and set aside time for a few minutes at least once a week to share what you’re discovering as you read, memorize, and journal. There is no requirement for using this resource but it is something you can use to show your teen that you are seeking to grow in spiritual disciplines as well. The journal is designed to engage four spiritual disciplines each day (reading, praying, interceding, memorizing). In addition to a Scripture reading plan and a Scripture memory plan, we’ve included the New City Catechism. The New City Catechism covers fifty-two theological questions summarized from historic catechisms that equips students with one theological question each week for a year covering every major and historic evangelical doctrine.

HOW WE HELP YOU AT CHURCH The Square is our bi-monthly student gathering where we seek to gather students to worship, equip them in the gospel, and build friendships that encourage discipleship. These meetings always involve teaching designed to be a safe place for students to grow in their understanding of what it means to follow Jesus, serve one another, and build friendships that foster community. In addition to the Square we encourage every student to participate in a Discipleship Group (DGroup) made up of students their own age and an adult leader. The purpose of DGroups is to meet once or twice a month to provide a safe place for students to grow in their walk with Jesus through encouragement

and accountability. Through DGroups, we are challenging our students to memorize verses, articulate theological questions that they will encounter throughout their lives, and step out bold compassion through gospel outreach.

HOW TO USE THIS JOURNAL The best way to use this journal is to schedule a time you will meet with God. You will need to set aside at least 20 minutes everyday to give time to read your passage, journal, meditate on the verse and question for the week, and take time to pray for the needs highlighted for that week. Every Monday starts with a new prayer focus for the week, as well as a catechism question and Scripture memory verse. The prayer focus each week will include an unreached people group that needs the gospel or a local need of Grace Church. Each day you open up your journal will have a Scripture passage to read and space to write. If you read everything each day you will read through the entire Bible by the end of January 2019. For students or adults hoping to read at that pace you will likely need to schedule a few more minutes each day. However, you can choose just one passage, or follow a different plan altogether. Whatever you choose to read write down what you’re reading every day in the blank provided (“other”) for future reference and to remember what to read the next day. Additionally you are provided with some space to prayer journal. This is an opportunity to share with God anything that He brought to your mind when you read that day. Prioritize reading and praying, and then if you have time, spend a few minutes answering the question from memory and trying to memorize the verse for that week. For those with access to a table or smart phone, you can choose to read your Scripture passage for that day using the Read Scripture App for iOS and Android (readscripture.org). The Read Scripture app follows the Bible reading plan created by The Bible Project (thebibleproject.com) which is the plan this journal uses. In addition, this journal provides a daily prayer focus that starts at the beginning of each week. The prayer guide alternates its focus between the needs of local ministries and the global needs of people groups who have yet to receive the gospel (as highlighted by the International Mission Board).

Outer Ri m People of East Asia Please pray for young adult believers among the Outer Rim people. Family pressure is very great to move abroad for work to provide for the family. At times, they are encouraged to compromise in the application process. When they do go abroad, they are removed from influencing their cultures for Christ. Some leave for several years, and most only come back to visit periodically. Please pray that these young people will listen to the Lord and give him priority over the recent cultural demands. Very few of their families are in need of food, clothing, or shelter. For most of them, it is a matter of bragging rights--"My son is in such and such a place"--or acquiring more modern "stuff."

LIFETALK PREGNA NCY RESOURCE CENTER LifeTalk is a local ministry to women and their husbands and boyfriends who need help, compassion, and resources for dealing with an unplanned pregnancy. Through free counseling, sonograms, and other tangible resources LifeTalk comes alongside women and demonstrate grace and compassion in a time of crisis. This Week pray... • That women who are experiencing an unplanned pregnancy and don't know who to turn to would discover this ministry through normal and surprising ways. • Pray for God to send counselors who are gifted with listening and caring with love, grace, compassion, and truth. • Pray that the enemy would be muted as he seeks to silence and shame women who have considered abortion or undergone abortion in the past. • Pray that the gospel breaks through with truth and hope.

WHAT I S GOD ? God is the creator and sustainer of everyone and everything. He is eternal, infinite, and unchangeable in his power and perfection, goodness and glory, wisdom, justice, and truth. Nothing happens except through him and by his will. PSALM 86:8–10, 15 There is none like you among the gods, O Lord, nor are there any works like yours. All the nations you have made shall come and worship before you, O Lord, and shall glorify your name. For you are great and do wondrous things; you alone are God. . . . But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.

Susu of Guinea (SOO-soo) - Thank you for praying last month for the young believer who was facing persecution in the village. He was forced to leave the pastor's home in which he was staying and live with an uncle who is an imam (an Islamic religious leader). The pastor and other believers prayed for the young man, and they encouraged him to remain calm and not to worry because God would act on his behalf. Less than a week later, the young man's family met together. The uncle called the pastor to apologize for what the family had done, and said that he was bringing his nephew back to the pastor, and the young man was free to believe as he chose. He is now back living with the pastor and his family. Praise God for the way that he moved in this situation! Pray that God will use this young believer and his witness to reach his family for Christ.

HOW MANY PERSONS ARE THERE IN GOD? There are three persons in the one true and living God: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. They are the same in substance, equal in power and glory. 2 CORINTHIANS 13:14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR P RO J E C T

The Love Your Neighbor Project is a student-led initiative to demonstrate the gospel to people in our city through tangible ways. Students gather once a month in their DGroups with others their age and go out serving people by asking for prayer and meeting needs where they are able. •

• •

Pray for our eyes to be opened to the real spiritual needs of people in the city. Jesus saw people away from God as "harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd (Matthew 9:36)." Pray we would have the same compassion he has for them. Pray for boldness for the teams who will be going out every month this fall. Pray that the Holy Spirit would empower every student with love that reaches out to those in need. Pray for Richie Clubine and the other leaders in the Square who are serving to organize these events and plan them out well in advance. Pray for God's direction and help.

Pe o p l e s o f We s t B e n g a l , India (beng-AHL) - Bankura is a district in West Bengal. It has a population of approximately 3.6 million, which is roughly the population of Connecticut. The name Bankura means "extremely beautiful habitation." It is a jungle area with a bit drier climate than other West Bengal districts and is home to one of India's largest earthen dams. The people work mainly in agriculture and small industries such as weaving, stone crushing, and making handicrafts, with the most popular of these handicrafts being terracotta figures. The district is 84 percent Hindu, 8 percent Muslim, and .11 percent Christian. Pray for the few believers in this state. Ask that they will be strong in both word and deed, and that they will remain committed to God and his Word despite hardships. Pray that they will share and multiply throughout their district, state, and region.

East Asian Unengaged Pe o p l e s In the second month of the lunar calendar, the Lawu (pronounced lah-woo) people hold a festival to worship the dragon god. They believe that he is responsible for rainfall and other natural events, and that by appeasing him, they can prevent floods and droughts. Only a few believers exist among the Lawu, and they need strength and perseverance to take the message of hope to neighboring villages. Ask God to establish his church among the Lawu people so thousands more will hear the gospel of Jesus.

Pray for High School students to take advantage of the Bridge Course as an opportunity to grow more deeply in their understanding of the gospel and be equipped to answer questions. Pray for God to open eyes of those who don't know Jesus to see him as a Savior who calls them to trust in him even in the midst of questions and doubts. Pray for all the administrative details needed for each night of the Bridge including childcare, food prep, table set up, sound, and small group prep.

WHAT I S THE LA W OF GOD STATED IN THE TEN COMMANDMENTS? You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not steal. You shall not give false testimony. You shall not covet. EXODUS 20:3 You shall have no other gods before me.

His desire is to see a church planted in each of the 42,000 villages in his state (population: approximately 123 million). From his congregations, he has sent more than 120 missionaries into the villages to reach the lost. Pray for Pastor Binod as he leads and encourages his people.

DGROUPS

DGroups are away for students to connect with others who are their own age and grow together to follow Jesus. We believe growth happens best in circles not rows so we want every student to be a part of a DGroup where they hang out, pray for each other, and challenge each other to put Jesus first. •

• •

Pray for the other students in your DGROUP and that they would grow this year to put sin to death and resist temptation. Pray that the group would grow to be a safe place of honesty and connection where it's ok to have questions and doubts or real challenges. Pray that students would reach out to their friends through the DGroup and that no teenager would be viewed as too far from God to experience love and grace. Pray for your DGroup leader that he or she would be growing in their walk with Jesus. Pray they would be abled by God's grace to balance other responsibilities while caring for the health of your group.

WHAT DO ES GOD REQUIRE IN THE NINTH AND TENTH COMMANDMENTS? Ninth, that we do not lie or deceive, but speak the truth in love. Sunny* is a newer believer among the Western Niger Fulani. Gratefully, Sunny is able to attend a church where the preaching and teaching are solid. Pray for Sunny to grow in knowledge and wisdom. Pray for him to know how to answer questions about his faith in a way that is gentle and respectful.

FCA is an on-campus ministry to students in middle and high school in all the schools in our community. • • • • •

Pray for God to move in powerful ways through Campus Huddle meetings in every middle school and high school in our city area. Pray for ways that The Square could partner with FCA to reach out to students with the message of life through Jesus. Pray for coaches and teachers who balance a great deal and serve voluntarily to connect students to Jesus. Pray for energy, patience, and joy in their service. Pray for Stephen Schuch and other leaders on the Square leadership team who have a heart for campus ministry and are seeking ways to build relationships with students. Pray for Weldon Swann the North Collin County Area Representative in his efforts to connect the local church to what God is doing through FCA.

DID GOD CREATE US UNAB LE TO KEEP HIS LA W? No, but because of the disobedience of our first parents, Adam and Eve, all of creation is fallen; we are all born in sin and guilt, corrupt in our nature and unable to keep God’s law. Sri Lanka Some believers recently met an islander named Harry* who is not native to Sri Lanka, but to another family of islands nearby. His tropical island nation is deeply rooted in Islam, so much so that Harry tells stories of when all the Bibles from all the homes in that land were confiscated and publicly burned. He tells of how when he was younger, he would sneak into his sibling's room to read the Bible because he was so curious. Praise God that Harry continued to follow the pull that led him to faith in Christ! Will you pray for Harry, for the many islanders from other places who are living in Sri Lanka, and for his home island nation of the Maldives? Harry is now being discipled and desires to return home to share the truth of Jesus there, even though he has received persecution from the Maldivian community in Sri Lanka. Pray for the believers of Sri Lanka to reach out to the Sri Lankan Muslims and Maldivian Muslims living among them.

SINCE NO ONE CAN KEEP TH E LA W, WHAT IS ITS PURPOSE? That we may know the holy nature and will of God, and the sinful nature and disobedience of our hearts; and thus our need of a Savior. FRISCO AREA HIGH SCHOOLS

There are thousands of students in every high school in the Frisco area who need to hear the hope of new life through Jesus. Pray for the high school you attend or the school closest to your home: Braswell | Centennial | Lebanon Trail | Wakeland | Frisco | Liberty | Heritage | Lone Star | Independence | Reedy • • • •

Pray that God would strengthen Christian high school students to be unashamed of Jesus and bold in sharing their hope in Jesus. Pray for revival among students to love Jesus more than anything this world has to offer. Pray for God to turn hearts to himself in surrender and worship.

WHAT I S SIN? Sin is rejecting or ignoring God in the world he created, rebelling against him by living without reference to him, not being or doing what he requires in his law—resulting in our death and the disintegration of all creation.

Or t ho dox Gr eek s o f T hessaloniki, Gr ee ce (theh-sah-loh-NEE-kee) - Please pray for the English classes for refugees and the other English classes for local Thessalonians. Pray for God to speak to their hearts, giving each participant an understanding of their separation from God because of their sins. May God put a spirit of repentance and faith in Christ in each heart. Pray for the women's Bible discussion time, asking that God will bring many women to the event and each one will hear the gospel, be convicted of their sin, and desire to know God personally. Ask the Holy Spirit to give the women an understanding of Scripture. Pray that they will have loving discussions of the verses and a sense of the presence of Christ during the meetings. Pray for God to give the leaders the wisdom to lead and opportunities to meet outside the group for more personal explanations.

WHAT I S IDOLATRY? Idolatry is trusting in created things rather than the Creator for our hope and happiness, significance and security. Pretoria, South Africa (pri-TOR-ee-uh) - "Our first discipleship group in Pretoria has just come to an end," writes the Pretoria Urban Sharers Team. "This has been an exciting time in which each participant has learned what is on God's heart and how to obey the teachings of Christ. They have specifically learned how to 'bridge' to the gospel and how to share the gospel with those with whom they come in contact. Please pray for boldness, discernment, wisdom, and the fullness of God's Spirit so they can be effective in the areas where they live. Most importantly, pray that much fruit will come from each of these disciples' lives."

Digo of Kenya and Ta n z a n i a (DEE-goh) - "And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also" (2 Timothy 2:2 ESV). Please pray that as those who labor among the Digo encounter believers, they will be intentionally investing in them to make disciples. There are many believers walking among the Digo who don't feel equipped to share the gospel or who live in fear of their unknown neighbors. Perhaps they need to be trained or simply challenged and held accountable to go and share. Pray that believers will rise to fulfill the Great Commission! Pray that those who can encourage and train believers will do so. Ask the Holy Spirit to lead in all opportunities that arise.

FRISCO FASTPACS

We want to ensure that no child in Frisco has to endure hunger when school is not in session. Caring for kids, one pack at a time. Every week throughout the school year, we deliver individual pre-packed bags to FISD schools that include enough food for 7 meals for each qualifying child for them to eat over the weekend at home. We can only accomplish this mission with your help and the help of others. Along with donations, we are always looking for volunteers who have a servant’s heart and who want to impact and make a difference in the community. Frisco Fastpacs is based solely on donations of food & funds. • • • •

Pray that the people who receive these gifts would glorify God and come to salvation through Jesus Christ. Matt. 5:16. Pray for jobs for the parents of these children that pay enough to meet their family’s needs. Pray that the Body of Christ in Frisco would engage in helping organizations like this in serving our community. Ask the Lord how you can give someone a “cup of water” Matt. 10:42 and if this ministry is something He would have you volunteer and serve at.

WHY WAS IT NECESSARY FOR CHRIST, THE REDEEMER, TO DIE? Since death is the punishment for sin, Christ died willingly in our place to deliver us from the power and penalty of sin and bring us back to God. By his substitutionary atoning death, he alone redeems us from hell and gains for us forgiveness of sin, righteousness, and everlasting life. COLOSSIANS 1:21–22 And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him.

Osaka, Ja pa n (OH-sah-kah) - "In October, our Osaka City Team members gathered for a training session in team building. Each of us learned about the others' spiritual gifts and how we can come together as the body of Christ to use those gifts to equip others and bring glory to God as we take the Good News to the Japanese. Pray that as we work together in unity, God will work through us in a powerful way and we will see lives changed here in Osaka, beginning with the missionaries and then expanding outward (John 17:15-26)."

DOES CHRIST’S DEATH MEAN ALL OUR SINS CAN BE FORGIVEN? Yes, because Christ’s death on the cross fully paid the penalty for our sin, God graciously imputes Christ’s righteousness to us as if it were our own and will remember our sins no more. 2 CORINTHIANS 5:21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Christ’s death is the beginning of the redemption and renewal of every part of fallen creation, as he powerfully directs all things for his own glory and creation’s good. Hindu People s o f Myanmar Please lift up the family of Steve* in the village of "Mother's Home." Steve went to India in search of peace over 30 years ago. He found it in the Prince of Peace and is now a pastor. He came home recently and was able to join with a Good News worker and other local believers as they went out and shared in his home village. Please pray that his family and friends who heard the message will think about the things they learned and will have a desire to know more. Pray that their lives will be changed.

ARE ALL PEOPLE, JUST AS THEY WERE LOST T H RO U G H A DA M , S AV E D T H RO U G H C H R I S T ? No, only those who are elected by God and united to Christ by faith. Nevertheless God in his mercy demonstrates common grace even to those who are not elect, by restraining the effects of sin and enabling works of culture for human well-being. WHAT H APPENS A FTER DEATH TO THOSE NOT UNITED TO CHR IST BY FAITH? At the day of judgment they will receive the fearful but just sentence of condemnation pronounced against them. They will be cast out from the favorable presence of God, into hell, to be justly and grievously punished, forever. JOHN 3:16–18, 36 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. . . . Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

Deaf Peoples Trent and Victoria Mullen*, workers among the Deaf in Mexico, share: "Bible stories make a huge difference for our Deaf friends. Often the Deaf struggle reading the Bible, not because they are less smart than hearing people, but because the Bible is not in their 'heart language.' For the Deaf, rather than words written on a page, stories are expressed using hands, the body, directions, and facial expressions, and these communicate the truth of the Bible. Please pray that God will lead us to find more Deaf people in and around our city in Mexico. Pray that the Deaf we meet will come to faith and become reproducing disciples, and that God will raise up leaders for the Deaf group forming here in our city. Pray that we will continue to learn more Mexican Sign Language and be able to help our Deaf friends craft many more Bible stories into their heart language."

HOW CAN WE BE S AV E D ? Only by faith in Jesus Christ and in his substitutionary atoning death on the cross; so even though we are guilty of having disobeyed God and are still inclined to all evil, nevertheless, God, without any merit of our own but only by pure grace, imputes to us the perfect righteousness of Christ when we repent and believe in him.
