Summer at FBC Allen More than a Program: This summer, our heart and desire is to lead students into becoming disciple makers. The great commission uses three phrases to describe what disciple making entails: go, baptize and teach them to obey everything Jesus commanded. Making disciples is far more than a program. It is the mission of our lives. It defines us. A disciple is a disciple maker. Every aspect of the summer calendar is designed to walk with students in understanding the #purpose of being a disciple of Christ. For some students this may mean seeing the #love God has for them for the very first time. For others it may be finding the #hope of the Gospel of good news of what God has done in their life through His Son, Jesus Christ. It will be a great summer, an exciting summer, and our prayer is that it FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH ALLEN is a summer that brings about a transformation of joy found only 201 E. Family Summer Nights This summer we want to help create moments for families to step away from a busy schedule. To step away from technology, both parents and students alike. To take some time to be together as a family without the pressures of the outside world and to...

just. focus. on. each. other.

Summer 2016 #xafamsummer

So, here's the challenge... Have your family take one night each month during the summer to just spend time having fun as a family. Each month there is a new challenge for you to accept. We have included instructions and even suggestions of what you can do. We would ask you to take a family photo with #xafamsummer, but remember...no technology...just focus on your family during this time. Our prayer is that we can all just stop for one night and listen to each others’ hearts and encourage each other to be disciples of Christ.

“Listen, dear friends, to God’s truth,

bend your ears to what I tell you. I’m chewing on the morsel of a proverb; I’ll let you in on the sweet old truths, Stories we heard from our fathers, counsel we learned at our mother’s knee. We’re not keeping this to ourselves, we’re passing it along to the next generation— God’s fame and fortune, the marvelous things he has done.” -Psalm 78:1-4

JUNE: Family Game Night Tonight we put away the phones, turn off the tv and make sure that all distractions are minimized. Tonight we turn up the competition and come together as a family to crown the true champion. This is not for the faint of heart - for one victor will be raised from the group. That’s right...it’s game night and if you are like my family, it means an all out war for bragging rights. Don’t worry if your family has never had game night before, we’ve got you covered. Not sure what board game to play, we’ve got you covered. Not sure what to say, we’ve got you covered.

The point of having game night is not actually about winning at all, but to bring your family together to see the incredible blessing that each one of you are to each other. So many times we get caught up in the busyness of life and the one aspect that gets neglected is the family. Yes we spend time in the car, and in the stands watching a sibling’s game. But...when was the last time your family has just stopped and spent time together in order to laugh, to cry, and to encourage one another? May this night be the start to something special for your family.

guide

Gu ide to Family Game Night Parents, introduce your favorite childhood board or card game to your kids and students, share your favorite game and teach your parents. Let this time draw you into open dialogue.

Sample Questions: Ask Your Parents: •

What was your favorite memory of when you were my age? What is one thing that is similar to being a teen and something that is very different?

Talk about a time where you failed at something? How did you respond to failing? How did it affect your future?

What was a recent difficulty that you had? How can we as a family be a support to you?

Ask Your Students: •

Was tonight fun for you? Why or why not?

Has there been a time recently that you felt like you failed at something? How did you respond?

Do you feel like you are supported, no matter the outcome, in the family? How can we be a better support for you?

JULY: Movie Night Movies are a central part of our culture. Everywhere we turn we hear about a new blockbuster that is coming out and how we need to see it. Especially in the age of Netflix where movies are available right at our fingertips and binge watching is a daily routine. If you are like my family you have multiple accounts for Netflix and you record different shows for different family members. What once was a time where families

gathered around the TV to share an experience has become a divider for our families. Pick a night for your family to come together to watch a movie. It doesn’t matter if your family heads to the theater or watches it at home. Watch the movie together and plan some time afterwards, such as eating dinner, and spend this time together to have a discussion about the film.

guide

Gu ide to Movie Night Movies influence our emotions, our thoughts and even our beliefs. The questions provided here are designed for families to examine the movie’s message and to create in us a discerning heart that is biblically based. May this be a fruitful time of understanding each other and growing together as you see the unique heart that God has given each family member.

Here are some movie suggestions: The BFG, The Secret Life of Pets, Finding Dory, Ice Age: Collision Course

Sample Questions: • Did you learn anything from this movie? If you did, what was it? • What is the message of this movie? Do you agree or disagree with it? • What did you like best about the movie? Why? Like least? Why? • Who was your favorite character in the movie? Least favorite character? • Did anything that happened in this movie remind you of something that has occurred in your own life? • Would you recommend this movie to a friend? • If you had a chance to ask a character in this movie a question, what would it be? • Does this movie support or contradict biblical beliefs? Explain? • How does the movie affect your emotions? Was that effect positive or negative? • How does the movie affect decisions in your life?

AUGUST: Family Prayer Night As summer comes to a close, we pray that all that God has been doing in us will be done through us as we enter a new school year. The greatest mission that we are called to is sharing the Gospel through daily interactions with friends, teachers and others at school, work and in our community. We are called to share the Gospel with those who do not know. God has called us to be the light in the darkness. Darkness can not overcome the light, but we must be willing to shine our light in the darkness. Plan one night for your family to gather at your student’s school to

pray for the different aspects of their school year. Lift up your student as God has called them to be on mission during this school year. As parents, take your children to your place of work and have them pray for you to also be on mission. After this time of prayer, enjoy a meal together and talk about how each one of you can be on mission, and how God has uniquely equipped you to be a light in your school, work and in your neighborhood. God has called us to “go and make disciples, baptizing them.” May our hearts be led to a moment during this prayer time to have a passion for this calling right in our own backyard.

Pray for: • Students • Parents • Teachers • School Support Staff • Principals • School Administration • Boss • Coworkers • Neighbors • Friends • Family Members
