Summer Bible Study: The Psalms Description for the Connect and Pastoral Teams- The great reformer John Calvin said, “There is nothing more perilous to our salvation than a preposterous and perverse worship of God.” Using not so subtle language, Calvin is getting at the idea that when a church worships God rightly, according to His Word, everything else falls into place. However, when a church succumbs to shallow, petty, preference-based, individualized worship, that church is on a dangerous course that must be corrected. As we walk through a transition in our worship ministry, and seek to deepen our commitment to exceptional, blended, intergenerational and integrated worship services, it is prudent to examine what God’s Word teaches about worship. During the summer of 2018 we will turn to the Book of Psalms, the hymnal placed at the very center of the Bible, for God’s teaching on proper worship. Our goal is that by the time fall arrives, everyone who calls the Chapel their church home to have a biblical, rather than personal, view of worship. We will do this in four ways: 1. Give the Chapel family an overview of the Psalter including structure, genres, Christological emphasis, and use in the New Testament. 2. Help the Chapel family understand each genre found in the Psalms and unpack the meaning of at least one psalm in every genre. 3. At some point during each sermon ask, “How does this psalm challenge our personal views of worship, and what does this psalm teach us about a biblical view of worship?” 4. Provide opportunities for the Chapel family to join the worship already taking place in heaven after having our personal views challenged by God’s Word. Note on Genres: Tremper Longman III in his book, How to Read the Psalms, identifies seven genres in the Psalter 1. Psalms of Praise 2. Psalms of Lament 3. Psalms of Thanksgiving 4. Psalms of Remembrance 5. Psalms of Confidence 6. Psalms of Wisdom 7. Psalms of Kingship (sometimes called, “The Messianic Psalm”) Our Series will focus predominately on the five genres of hymn, lament, remembrance, confidence, and wisdom. We will cover the Kingship Psalm in the introduction to the series and touch on the Psalm of Thanksgiving in conjunction with our teaching on the Psalm of Lament (often times Thanksgiving Psalms are thanking God for answer to a prayer offered in lament). Bellow are examples of psalms in each genre to help the preachers identify corollary psalms: • Psalms of Praise o 103 o 113 o 92 o 19 o 98–hymn of praise for deliverance and dealt with in-depth in Longman book • Psalms of Lament o 22 o 42 and 43 together represent all three types of complaints between the two of them and they were probably one psalm together at one point o 12 o 17 o 69–dealt with in-depth in Longman book o 54 o 109–imprecatory o 26 o 83–national lament o 3

Psalms of Thanksgiving o 56 o 34 o 32 o 30 o 18
