Summer Worship Focus: Celebrating God’s Family We invite you to… Share some family photos Pick out a few favorites from your family photo album and send them to us. We will share them on Sunday mornings before and after worship services as a way of getting acquainted with one another. Share a family story Tell us about a family reunion, a marriage that almost didn’t happen, finding that special love or an interesting process of adoption. We welcome some of these stories to be printed in our summer editions of Chimes and perhaps shared in worship. Take a few moments, write down the story or account and send it to Pastor Schroerlucke, [email protected]. Wear your FUMC nametag on summer Sundays It’s a good way to put name and face together. It just might open a conversation that leads to a new friendship. If you do not have a nametag, please let the person at the Information Desk know and one will be made for you.

We seek to embody grace and hospitality in the manner of Jesus, nurturing our diverse spiritual journeys and joining together as a servant community to help realize a more loving and just world.

His name was Henry Timberlake. He didn’t like his assignment. He was a soldier in the colonial army in the 1700’s when the King of England and the colonial militia were deciding how to “manage” Native Americans. The Cherokee, in the Appalachian Mountains, were an unknown factor. The unknown creates fear. So Timberlake was assigned to live amidst the Cherokee and report back whatever he could find out about these “strange savages”. He went reluctantly. He knew nothing about these strangers and therefore believed the worst. But a curious thing happened. After many months of living with the Cherokee people and carefully noting everything about their daily lives, (creating a diary that remains the most thorough recounting of Cherokee culture), Timberlake came to respect the Cherokee and even care deeply about their future. Because he now knew them as friends, he came to see them as persons of worth, not strangers with strange habits. As I wandered through the exhibit on Cherokee culture, I was struck by the familiar ring of this message. How many times do we have to re-learn Jesus’ message of inclusion? His actions showed us time and again that no one is outside the love of God and therefore no one is outside OUR care. In our country’s brief history, first it was the Native Americans, then African Americans, then women, then gays and lesbians – anyone different – whom we excluded. As the children’s song reminds us, “Jesus loves the little children, All the children of the world.” God, help us know that “all” means “ALL”.

Serving the Homeless – Will You Help?

First Church provides dinner monthly to homeless men at the Porchlight Drop-In Shelter and we need more help with food donations and volunteers. Each month our food donors provide: Saturday dinner: chili, salad, salad dressing, dinner rolls, milk, apple juice, cookies and fruit; Sunday breakfast: eggs, sausage, cereal, milk, orange juice, muffins and fruit; And, since there is no free meal for Sunday lunch, our donors provide a sack lunch of sandwiches, fruit, cookies and chips. Food Donors: We are in need of more food donors for chili, salad, milk, orange juice, apples, bananas, cereal, bread, cookies, chips and muffins. We are also in need of volunteers to work on shelter nights: Food Transport: Every month volunteers come to First Church and heat up the chili, load all the food into the church van, and transport it to Grace Episcopal Church, where the shelter guests are quick to offer help to unload. We need 2-3 volunteers to help with this transport each month. It would be especially helpful to have a person or persons who can do this every month, so that there is someone available who “knows the ropes.” Food Servers: We serve dinner every other month (Marshall UMC alternates with us) and need 3-5 volunteers each time. We serve dinner in July, September, and November. Get friends or family together and you’ll find it’s a lot of fun, as well as being a fulfilling and blessed experience. The men we serve are very appreciative – because we care and because the First Church chili meal is pretty tasty!

Last December I was driving a foodfilled van over to Grace Episcopal for our Marshall UMC friends to serve. The snow was swirling against the windshield and I was thinking about being homeless on a night so dark and frigid. In that moment, I couldn’t think of anything I’d rather be doing than taking a delicious hot meal to those seeking shelter from the cold. To sign up or learn more, please give me a call at 608-256-9061, ext. 16 or email me at [email protected]. Thank you.

Susan Jeannette, Director of Outreach Ministries

P.S. – A huge “thank you” goes to Dave Storey and Steve Crocker who serve breakfast every month. They arrive at 5 a.m. to cook the eggs and sausage and enjoy every minute of it!

Annual Conference – June 12-15

The Wisconsin Annual Conference will be held in Wisconsin Dells from June 12-15. This is the annual gathering of United Methodists from around the state. Bishop Linda Lee will preside. Attending from First Church will be Pastor Keith Schroerlucke, Rev. Tina Lang, Leigh Roberts, Doug Knudson, and Bobbi Reynolds. Also attending in other capacities will be Curtis Wittwer, Julie Miehe, Donna Veatch and Bill White. It is at annual conference that the conference budget is approved, appointments for our clergy are confirmed and other church business is conducted. This year, attendees will elect delegates to the General and Jurisdictional quadrennial conferences. The General Conference determines policy and law for the denomination. This will be held in spring of 2012. Please hold these persons attending in prayer at this critical time in our church’s history.

Youth Auction Recap FUMC Foundation Workshop – Sunday, June 26

“Leaving a Legacy” 9:30 and 11 a.m. in Fellowship Hall You are invited to participate in an informative, informal workshop focused on the importance of preparing a will and ways to include gifts to the church in your will. A will is one of the faithful stewardship tools we use to say “thank you” to God for the many blessings we’ve received. Come and learn ways of determining and distributing the charitable portion of your estate. The workshop will be led by Rev. Jean Ehnert Nicholas, Vice President of Programs and Resources, Wisconsin United Methodist Foundation and by Sheila Boothby Stevens, Attorney at Law, Michael Best & Friedrich. The same hour-long workshop will be offered twice with an optional light brunch from 10:30-11 a.m. to allow for extended discussion, Q&A, and social time with workshop leaders and participants. Pre-registration is requested. Sign up at the Information Desk on Sundays or email [email protected] to reserve your spot.

What a Mother’s Day! Thanks to all the generous auction item donations and the generous bids people put on the items, we made over $2,000 for our youth mission trips this summer! Some of the bidding got pretty exciting, especially during the live auction. Thanks to all who participated, especially the planning team: Lynn Fry, Pam Cotant, Garrett Farin, Amanda Fry and Hannah Fry.

Jr. High Convo Recap

It made no difference to this year’s small contingency – Convo was just as much fun. Everyone had a great time, heard great music and inspiring messages, got to know each other better and even played a few rounds of human fooseball!

Welcome, First Church New Members! May 2011

New members join a fellowship of growing and committed disciples seeking to build upon the faithful journeys of the past as we make a difference in the name of Christ today. Please take time to seek out our new members and welcome them to the fellowship of our church and the journey we will share together.

Patrick Rowley Patrick moved to Madison in January from Virginia Beach where he worked at a maritime science and industry museum on the downtown Norfolk waterfront. He now works at UW’s Space Science & Engineering Center on a project to provide training to museums around the world with the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration “Science On a Sphere” exhibits. He graduated from The College of William & Mary, where he was very involved in the Wesley Foundation, and did his graduate work at Mississippi State. Patrick comes from a family of Methodists: His father is a Methodist minister and Navy chaplain (currently serving in Dover, Delaware as the chaplain for the families of the fallen marines and sailors), and three uncles and one aunt who are Methodist ministers in Virginia and North Carolina. After testing out several churches in Madison, Patrick decided First Church was the right place, primarily based on the hospitality and welcome he received his first Sunday. He’s now a part of the Handbell Choir.

Kathy Daggs & Scott Divine Kathy graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire with a degree in political science, and, unlike many political science majors, has stayed in that field. She has worked on a number of campaigns including local races, state assembly and senate, and the 2008 presidential race. She also spent three years working in the State Senate. Currently she works for a political consulting organization in Madison. Scott went to Holy Cross Lutheran School in Madison and was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Sun Prairie. He graduated from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities with a major in global studies. After graduation he spent a year studying and becoming fluent in Chinese in Taiwan. He now lives in Milwaukee and works for an industrial supply company. Scott and Kathy both grew up in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin and are getting married this August. They enjoy biking, boating and traveling. They have been attending First Church services since November. They knew they wanted to become members and get married here with the first loaf of new member bread! They are looking forward to getting more involved with the church in the months and years to come.

Delaney & Kellye Walker-Pontius Kellye has been a United Methodist almost all her life. She was born in Oklahoma, moved to the Midwest to live in Milwaukee, then in West Des Moines and now Sun Prairie. She and her husband Jim are parents to daughter Delaney, and Jim’s two teenage sons. Our Reconciling Ministry status brought Kellye to First Church. This is a ministry near and dear to her. While living in West Des Moines, she chaired the committee that led Walnut Hills United Methodist Church to an affirmative vote to become a reconciling congregation. She holds master’s degrees in adult education and human relations. She says she “loves being involved in my church.” She sings in the Chancel Choir and is looking forward to becoming more connected at First Church.

Jan & Curt Weatherhogg Curt is a retired pediatrician, having practiced for 38 years. He was widowed in 2004 after 52 years in a wonderful marriage. He has three children and seven grandchildren. His hobbies include golf, travel, calligraphy, and playing the trumpet in three bands, including the Blessed Brass. Jan worked as Curt’s pediatric assistant for 30 years until he retired. She then went to work as a Medicaid Outreach Coordinator and later as a Medicaid/BadgerCare HMO Ombudsman, handling grievances for the enrollees, until she retired. She enjoys traveling, making jewelry, reading and gardening. She has one child and loves being able to spend lots of time with her grandson, who is three years old. On December 4, 2010, Jan and Curt were married here at First Church, with their four children standing up for them. Their families have had a long history of knowing each other so it was truly a wonderful event for all. “For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one spirit” 1 Corinthians 12:12-13

Ralph and Marian Alton

It’s Now the Alton-Van Dyke Scholarship

The Alton Scholarship Committee has voted that the Scholarship be known as the Alton-Van Dyke Scholarship, effective this spring. After Bishop Ralph Alton died in 1994, Van and Nancy Van Dyke developed a plan and began to raise funds for a youth scholarship, to be named after Ralph and Marian Alton. Ever since 1995, Alton Scholarships have been awarded annually to graduating high school seniors who are church members and who have been active in the church’s youth program. This month the Alton Scholarship Committee voted to incorporate both the Alton and Van Dyke names into the scholarship title. Both Bishop Alton and Van Van Dyke believed in the value of participation in the church youth program as important to starting a lifetime of Christian service. Bishop Alton said, “The youth program is where the youth learn to be Christians.” The committee believes it is fitting and appropriate that both family names be attached to the scholarship program, which now has an endowment balance of more than $431,000. The funds are invested and administered by the church’s foundation. Nancy Van Dyke continues to serve as an active member of the committee, which has been chaired by Jim Hoyt ever since the program was created.

Van and Nancy Van Dyke

Alton-Van Dyke Scholarships to be Awarded on June 5

On Sunday, June 5, the church will award Alton-Van Dyke Scholarships to eight graduating high school seniors in the class of 2011. The scholarships will be presented at the 9:30 a.m. worship service. The Alton Scholarship fund, recently renamed the Alton-Van Dyke Scholarship, was created in 1995 by the family and friends of Bishop Ralph and Marian Alton. Alton-Van Dyke scholarships are awarded each year to graduating high school seniors who have actively participated in youth activities of the church while in high school. This year the Alton -Van Dyke Scholarships are in the amount of $1,500 each. Also, this year an Alton -Van Dyke Scholarship for an individual preparing for the ordained ministry will be awarded to Sonja Parr. That scholarship is for $4,000. This is the third year Sonja has received an Alton-Van Dyke Scholarship for her seminary studies.

More than $108,000 in scholarships has been awarded over the seventeen years of the program. During that time the scholarships have grown from $325 to the current $1,500. The number of scholarships awarded varies from year to year, depending on the number of qualified applicants who apply. The following 2011 graduates will receive this year’s Alton-Van Dyke Scholarships: • • • • • • • •

Sunday Faith Development Opportunities The Journey – 9:30 a.m. in Room 208. A fellowship-based class with a focus toward parents and couples meets to share life journeys and discuss topics of interest. (Last class is Sunday, May 29.) Theology for the 21st Century – 9:30 a.m. in Room LL05. The group is studying John Dominic Crossan’s latest book, The Greatest Prayer. Crossan takes a fresh look at the Lord’s Prayer by studying its meaning in a biblical context. Delving deeply into the story of the Jewish nation in Jesus’ time, he shows how Jesus, couched in the words of this prayer, advises his followers to reject violent methods of resisting their Roman captors, and instead work for the coming of the Kingdom of God, the only way to achieve true freedom. Come and join the lively discussions.
