The CSFA – More than a Yankee Doodle

As our great nation recently celebrated its 241st year of Independence, regardless of current political views, it’s necessary to remember our country is a product of deeply held beliefs and ideas championed by individuals who were willing to risk it all. Strong beliefs and ideas are at the heart of every great change, and ten years ago one of those changes was spawned by a choice made by a group of fitness directors in South Florida who were willing to risk, giving birth to the CSFA.

While hardly as impactful to world history, the CSFA has meant many things to many people. For some, it’s a brand new association you’re just beginning to learn about, hoping you can take advantage of networking opportunities while pursuing your CSFD. For others it’s been a sounding board you turn to when you need to vet ideas and weigh decisions. For more it’s a place you’ve trusted to help grow your career. And for a few, the CSFA is the reason for your career. Whatever the case, this association was born out of a set of beliefs and ideas that deserve to be celebrated. It’s been through no small effort by countless individuals that the CSFA now stands at over 300 members, is present in 28 states, and supported by more than 20 corporate partners.

Please join us where it all began at the 2017 Florida Roundtable July 16th – 18th in celebration of the CSFA’s 10th Anniversary. We’ll be at the Country Club at Mirasol and The Club at Admirals Cove, and besides two outstanding days of education there will be club tours, celebratory receptions, and the largest vendor showcase of the year. On top of that, the CSFA is giving away its 10th annual Future of Fitness Scholarship Award, Vision Award, and Lifetime Achievement Award.

In the meantime, if you’d like a top to bottom account of CSFA history, please read the complete story beginning on page 4 by Founding CSFA President and CSFA’s Inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Lynn Hearn, as she shares the passion of the CSFA from its beginning until now.

The future of the CSFA is here and we can’t wait to share it with you. Be sure to take a look at the Roundtable agenda on page 7 and also welcome our newest board members, Brendan Crotty, Amy Schlossenberg, and September Woods, whose profiles can be found on page 3.

Thank you for making the CSFA great. Happy reading and I look forward to seeing you in South Florida. Yours in health, Kevin Caldabaugh

WELCOME NEW CSFA BOARD MEMBERS The CSFA is pleased to welcome its three newest board members: BRENDAN CROTTY

Amy would like to do whatever she can to assist in boosting the national awareness of the CSFA. In addition, she believes that the fitness directors can learn and benefit from one another, which is advantageous to the CSFA.

River Oaks Country Club, Houston, TX

Brendan Crotty is a native Houstonian and graduated from Texas A&M University in College Station, TX with a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and minor in Business. After attaining his degree, Brendan worked for ClubCorp in the Houston area for 5 years. He held the title of Intern, Assistant Fitness Director, and Fitness Director and served in those roles at three different ClubCorp business and sports clubs. Brendan joined the management team at River Oaks Country Club as the Director of Fitness in March of 2009. River Oaks Country Club opened a 20,000 square foot Fitness Center three months after Brendan joined the team. Today the facility offers massage, Pilates, training, M.A.T. and group exercise and has a team of 70 employees that create wellness experiences for the membership. Brendan’s certifications include NASM CPT, NASM CES, and M.A.T. JumpStart. He is also a member of CMAA.

SEPTEMBER WOODS

Canoe Brook Country Club, Summit, NJ

September Woods is the Performance Center Director of Canoe Brook Country Club. She has over 10 years’ experience in senior level management at private and resort golf club facilities throughout the world. She specializes in turnaround and start-up situations and is sought out for business plan development and implementation of operating procedures and service standards. She holds multiple fitness certifications, from Olympic Lifting to Transformational Breathing, but most proudly, from Titleist Performance Institute.

Brendan is excited to offer his experience, knowledge, and passion of the fitness industry to the CSFA Board. He is driven to continue the growth of the association’s membership, particularly in the south, and contribute to the strong foundation of standards and education that the organization promotes.

Prior to her position at Canoe Brook Country Club, September was the Director of Performance Training at the world famous Baltusrol Golf Club, and there had the privilege of working for one of America’s Top 50 golf professionals. September’s international experience with the Sergio Garcia Junior Golf Academy at PGA Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain, secured her reputation as a leader in the private country club industry with a proven track record of developing comprehensive golf fitness programming for multi-generational upscale country clubs.

AMY SCHLOSSENBERG

Amy graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in Nutrition. She completed her post-graduate internship in Nutrition in New York. Amy has worked in the fitness and wellness industry for over 20 years.

“I’m an avid learner. My interests are in continually learning how to professionally better educate and motivate people. I’m a seminar junkie! One of the favorite parts of my job is meeting professionals like yourselves that constantly push forward and invest in their skill set to maximize their potential. I enjoy sharing my passion for human performance and seeing the lives of the members I serve change for the better.”

Amy first began teaching group exercise in college and taught for 12 consecutive years until she became more involved in personal training. In addition, she worked as a fitness entrepreneur for number of years until she officially became an employee of Lakewood Country Club as Director of Fitness. Amy is nationally certified through NASM, AFAA, and TPI.

10 YEARS AND GOING STRONG! The CSFA Vision… An Evolution of Private Club Wellness

The Evolution of Spa

As the CSFA celebrates 10 years of growth for the association and the industry it represents, it is only fitting to reflect back on how we started, how far we have come and where we are going.

The origin of “spa” and its meaning, “finding health though water,” spans through history and many cultures including Greek, Roman, Russian, Asian and Turkish. Today “spa” has been redefined as a place that promotes wellness by providing a variety of therapeutic treatments intended to renew the body, mind and spirit of its guests.

Much like any pioneer concept, the CSFA started with an idea, a vision, and the possibility of “what could be” if the concept of wellness was introduced and facilitated in the private club setting on a widescale basis. It was the recognition that although golf, tennis and social offerings had historically been the main features attracting members to clubs, the focus on an optimal “lifestyle” made clubs the ideal setting for the merging of fitness, spa and wellness programs as an attractive member benefit. To provide services that were not only a convenient part of daily club life but that afforded health benefits and improved quality of life was an appealing concept that added value to club membership. The private club environment became the ideal melting pot for three industries, all with roots in ancient practices but experiencing modern day growth and relevance.

Elizabeth Arden is credited with creating the first day spa in the U.S. in 1910 when she opened the Red Door Spa in Manhattan. Edmond and Debra Szekey opened

The Evolution of Fitness

Since the late 1970’s and early 1980’s fitness facilities and programming had become an emerging industry with large fitness facilities and small studios opening up across the United States. The founding of Gold’s Gym by Joe Gold in 1977 ushered in the big box gym concept, while the 1980’s were fueled by high energy fitness programming and aerobic exercise offered by large fitness chains including LA Fitness, 24 Hour Fitness, and Jack Lalanne’s European Health Spas. Jane Fonda and her exercise videos ignited a group fitness craze and exercising in groups went mainstream, with people attending classes at big gyms and studios.

Another major influence during this time was Dr. Ken H. Cooper, widely recognized as the “father of the modern fitness movement.” Dr. Cooper presented a new philosophy that focused on disease prevention instead of disease treatment. Early in his career, Cooper stressed the necessity of providing epidemiological data to support the benefits of regular exercise and health. Data from thousands of individuals became the foundation for his “aerobics” concepts. Dr. Cooper’s message, programs and ideas established the evidence-based from which current fitness organizations and national certification bodies use today.

the first destination spa in 1940, Rancho La Puerta, located south of the border in Baja California, as a health retreat for like-minded individuals seeking a balance of healthy living combining physical exercise, good nutrition and education while reconnecting with nature. In 1958 Debra Szekey opened the Golden Door Spa in Escondido, California which was the first to offer customized weight loss and fitness programs. The first fitness spa, The Ashram, opened in Calabasas, 4

California in 1974, offering an intense, no- frills, bootcamp-style weight loss and fitness program. In 1979 Canyon Ranch opened in Tuscan Arizona and in addition to programming for fitness, nutrition and education, introduced a medical component for guests including registered dieticians, board certified physicians and exercise physiologists among others to offer comprehensive and customized health and wellness services. The late 1990’s saw innovative medical doctors begin to introduce “medical spas,” which combined Western and holistic medicine in a luxurious, spa- inspired environment along with spa services.

extends from reactive to proactive approaches to health, wellness YEAR ANNIVERSARY falls firmly on the 2007 • 2017 proactive side, incorporating attitudes and activities that prevent disease, improve health, enhance quality of life, and bring a person to increasingly optimum levels of well-being.**

* Preamble to the Constitution of the WHO, www.who.int/about/ definition/en/print.html.

** The continuum concept is adapted from Dr. Jack Travis’ Illness Wellness Continuum. Travis was one of the pioneers of the modern wellness movement in the late 1970s.

As modern spas evolved, they were often thought of as an oasis, a temporary destination intended to “re-set” one’s daily habits and to address conditions resulting from the stresses of the modern world. The focus on prevention, learning about a healthy lifestyle, and the value of balancing exercise, good nutrition, and relaxation was the challenge that guests would then attempt to sustain once they returned home to their everyday life.

The Evolution of the CSFA….

The emergence of the first fitness centers in private clubs occurred in the early 1990’s and were typically small areas of the club that were repurposed to meet the requests of some members wanting convenient access to fitness equipment and programs within their own club. By 2001, these small operations had grown in popularity and service offerings. With the core of these operations mostly fitness based, the majority of directors at the time originated from the fitness industry, but were quickly discovering the requirements of their role reached beyond the realm of fitness. It was this quest for “more” that inspired a small group of eight directors in South Florida to meet in the summer of 2001 to network and discuss their operations; the “how to’s,” the challenges and what best resources were being used. A small survey was developed for the following year’s meeting as the basis for discussion and the first roundtable was born. Directors now had good benchmarking information to report back to their respective club managers, boards and committees. This data broadened the scope of what was developing beyond their club walls and proved valuable in creating a vision and progression for the directors to grow and enhance their operations. The number of directors attending the summer roundtable grew annually until finally in 2006 in the meeting hosted at the Country Club at Mirasol, Directors representing over 50 private clubs were in attendance and the idea of formalizing the association was born. The group discussed the importance of creating recognition for fitness, spa and wellness professionals within the club landscape and the need for education and establishing standards of operation. Although most facilities started as simply a gym or fitness only program, the Wellness model with a multidimensional approach

The Evolution of Wellness

Wellness, like fitness and spa, is a modern concept with ancient roots dating back to the Greek, Roman and Asian cultures. In the 1950’s, 1960’s and 1970’s, the writings and leadership of a network of physicians and thinkers in the U.S. presented models of wellness that focused on prevention in addition to conceptualizing a multi-dimensional approach to health and well-being. The concept of an alternative to doctors, drugs and disease gained momentum from 1980-2000 when the medical, academic, government and corporate communities began to take note and embrace the concept. From the Global Wellness Institute

According to the Global Wellness Institute, formed in 2007 and established as a non-profit organization in 2014 to educate the public and private sectors about preventative health and wellness, wellness has now become a 3.7 trillion-dollar industry. Consistent with the World Health Organization’s definition of “health,” the Global Wellness Institute defines wellness as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being.*It goes beyond mere freedom from disease or infirmity and emphasizes the proactive maintenance and improvement of health and well-being. Expressed on a continuum that

5

was a natural fit for the private club. The need to consolidate latest research, trends and information from quickly evolving fitness, spa and wellness industries and apply the relevant information to private club operations was a role that the group saw as being an important one. In addition, the elements of a private club proved to be the ideal conditions for wellness to thrive as clubs already had many of the other wellness lifestyle components in place.

The small-scale surveys and roundtable format of the early years slowly transitioned to the larger State of the Industry Report and Trend Report, as the Annual Meeting grew in scope and size to include education not only for directors and club management, but for the professional staff as well. In 2016 and 2017, the CSFA took the “show on the road” in a national outreach effort to serve members across the country while creating more visibility to grow the association. In 2017, the CSFA has grown from a small Florida Association to a National Association of over 300 members representing 27 States.

In 2007 the CSFA was formed as a non-profit 501(c) to provide a foundation for “Best Practices” for Private Club Wellness operations. The establishment of the CSFA was made possible by two Founding Sponsors: The Florida Chapter of the Club Managers Association of America (Fl-CMAA) and the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) and ten Founding Clubs who shared in the vision of the role the CSFA would play in helping to guide, grow and report on this emerging private club sector. We owe gratitude to our Founding Clubs: Lost Tree Club, Old Palm Golf Club, The Club at Admirals Cove, Country Club at Mirasol, Quail Valley Golf Club, Woodfield Country Club, Ballen Isles Country Club, Frenchman’s Creek, the Ritz Carlton Golf Club and SpaJupiter, and Addison Reserve Country Club, who saw the benefit and need to facilitate the growth of wellness as an important member benefit within private clubs. Another critical success factor with the CSFA from the beginning was the inception of a Corporate Partner Program which identified best-in-class companies who were committed to serving club wellness operations and helping to grow the industry in the process. These partnerships have provided support, efficiencies and quality products and services to CSFA members and clubs.

A Look Towards the Future

Back in 2007 Spafinder named “spa real estate” a top trend, after tracking the rise of a new type of residence that essentially let people live at a destination spa, and in 2015, the Global Wellness Institute identified Wellness Communities as a top trend. Ahead of its time, this formula for ultimate wellness living was already happening within private clubs as potential members began basing their membership decisions more frequently on the wellness facilities and programming offered. With a deep history rooted in gathering for social, sport and dining purposes, private clubs are now becoming the ultimate destination for health and wellbeing. The progressive club facilities rival the most comprehensive destination spas with “circle of care” programming including physical therapy, a vast range of fitness modalities from medical fitness to performance training, nutritional counseling, therapeutic spa and skincare services and health/life coaching professionals dedicated to executing a concierge approach to improved member health. As we celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the CSFA, the future of the association and growth of wellness is bright. As the private Club Industry continues to evolve and seeks to attract new members, the concept of wellness communities offering lifestyle programs and services to a multigenerational population becomes all the more important. Much like the wellness model itself, clubs will find themselves somewhere on the continuum, questioning what they need to do in order to be competitive and meet the needs, wants and expectations of their current and future members. Assisting in this process, the CSFA will continue to play a major role offering education, consulting, networking, reporting on trends and consolidating the best of fitness, spa and wellness information for private club operations.

Early on, the CSFA board was fortunate to meet with the CMAA who shared wise advice on the structure of the newly formed association and with the growing interest in wellness within private clubs, recognized the value of the CSFA in providing education and information as an allied partner of the CMAA. The CSFA continued to grow yearly, transitioning from a small Florida based Association to a National organization offering education via workshops and webinars, presentations on wellness for general managers, an annual “Future of Fitness” Master’s Degree Scholarship, a Job Bank, and a website filled with valuable resources, directories and networking tools. In 2013, the CSFA assisted the CMAA with the content for a book entitled Fitness, Spa and Wellness in the Private Club, a compilation of articles on a variety of topics relating to best practices. A long-term CSFA objective was achieved in 2015 with the publishing of the CSFA’s Private Club Spa and Fitness Management Resource Manual and the Spa and Fitness Director Certification course based on the manual to establish core competencies for directors, an industry first.

Lynn Hearn is the Director of Spa & Fitness at the Lost Tree Club in North Palm Beach, the Founding President of the CSFA, and the recipient of the CSFA 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award. 6

5 SPA WAYS TO SAVE LABOR AND KEEP STAFF HAPPY 1. Know Your Budget. Labor comprises most of a spa’s budgeted expenses so make sure you know your budget information well. Understand your labor costs as a percentage of the revenue. I recommend keeping track of your actual labor costs as compared to your budgeted labor costs each week and adjust. Remember if you increase your revenue you can increase your labor.

4. Train and Then Train Some More. To avoid costly mistakes, provide ongoing training for your staff. Training saves labor costs in the long run. Every missed booking costs money. Every discount on a service increases your labor percentage. This adds up. With training, you can reduce mistakes and keep staff happier through on-going education. Your employee retention rates will be better. Don’t forget the costs associated with losing and/or hiring staff.

2. Watch the Clock. Ensure employees are clocking in and out honestly and correctly. The savings you will gain by eliminating the “early in,” “shortened lunches” and “late out” will be surprising. Over a period of 365 days this number adds up.

5. Become a Data Wiz. Create spreadsheets to record your labor costs as a percentage of your revenue every payroll period, even by category. Massage revenue to massage labor; salon revenue to salon labor, reservations team labor to overall revenue, etc. This exercise will benefit new mangers as they look for opportunities to capture lost sales and lower labor costs. You can better manage what you know.

3. Set Schedule Policies Based on Demands. Have policies in place for adding and reducing staff levels based on the demands of business. The worst thing managers can do for morale is to send staff home early without consistency. On the other hand, it’s just as damaging to interrupt staff members on their day off and “beg” them to come in. Saving labor (or capturing revenue) this way is poor business management. Set staffing level policies such as adding a therapist when productivity reaches 60% (the ratio of actual hours of service to available hours of service) or use a reduced fitness coverage schedule when occupancy is under 50%.
