Congratulations to the 2015 Chamber Large Business of the Year – Summerville Medical Center! Summerville Medical Center has been a vital part of our community since they opened their doors in 1989. Since then, they have continued to invest in our needs beyond the typical community hospital services, such as obstetrics, neonatal, emergency and surgical care, and diagnostic and therapy services. They have added more specialized services, including advanced wound care, robotic surgery, bariatric surgery, cardiac rehabilitation, and a sleep center. In response to the rapid growth of families with children in the community, they recently invested more than $3 million to ensure our children have the highest level of pediatric care close by, including the addition of a 24hour Pediatric ER and a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). They always keep the patient and their family in the forefront of their care and planning. This is evidenced by their recognition as a Joint Commission Top Performing Hospital on Key Quality Measures for the last five years -- an achievement only attained by 11% of the nation’s hospitals. They have also achieved an “A” grade with the Leapfrog Group for their outstanding record of patient safety, and routinely ranks high in patient satisfaction. This quality has been maintained despite record breaking inpatient and pediatric admissions, ER visits, and surgical volume in 2015. Recently, they rose to a significant challenge during the “thousand year” flood in October 2015. For at least 48 hours, they were one of only two hospitals in the Tri County region able to receive EMS patients due to road closures that cut off access to other area hospitals. More specifically, they were the only pediatric-ready facility available. Our judges had this to say about our 2015 Large Business of the Year: “It’s hard to imagine any other business contributed more to the Summerville community than they did during the ‘thousand year’ flood in October 2015. That takes them over the top in my opinion.” “Their community investment - $18 million since 2013 and $3 million for pediatric care – is pretty impressive!”
