College Accepted to College Ready

We Asked Ourselves: Do we have the right mission? Yes! Every student is capable of being College and Career Ready. Do we tweak our current model? No. We must do more. Do we rethink the entire school experience for both students and educators? YES!

Our First Try: Blended Learning Math Pilot Program Overview of the 2011- 2012 blended learning math pilot: ü  Blended Curriculum Integrating Algebra I & Geometry ü  Teacher-directed Rotation ü  Three Math Teachers, 35 Students each, Two Hour Daily Math Block

Partnership with Khan Academy: Modular, Flexibility in utilization by teachers and students Free, No large financial investment needed Strong Partnership, Iterative user design process Teacher Dashboard, Real-time data for teachers and students

Blended Learning: Lessons Learned

Challenges of a ‘traditional’ blended learning environment include: v  A single scope and sequence curriculum, not allowing students to move at their own pace v  Teacher-directed learning, with students unable to drive their own learning v  Students regulated to grade levels, prohibiting a truly personalized pathway v  Physical constraints of classroom walls, architectural structure and school design

Our Shared Vision Students are empowered to self-direct learning

Provide opportunities for deeper skills development across curricula Offer authentic, real-world experiences that allow students to explore passions and careers Personalize a student’s pathway through a competency-based content progression Ensure meaningful opportunities for students to foster community and a sense of belonging
