SPEND YOURSELF Post Session 2 Prep

Begin with the story of the Capitol: opulent, excessive, self-focused. The Katy Perry song can be used to illustrate the life style of self-focus, but that it is voluntary slavery, slavery to comfort, wealth, possessions, status. The next question can essentially be summed up as “Put your money where your mouth is.” We often say that we believe certain things and support certain things, but money can reveal what we really care about. See the following stats. Next, explore the idea of possessions and happiness. Then take a look at the rich list video. Ask how students define poverty. If need be help them to see a bigger picture, how impoverished much of the world really is. Last, use the final questions as a sneak peek to the last two sessions and help students start discussing how we can learn from those who have less than us. The danger in this entire discussion is to sound to heavy handed about our wealth and the situations that we live in, but that is not the intention at all. Instead work hard to help students see a bigger picture of the world and realize the reality of how much we have and also ,referring back to Session 1’s discussion, how good things and things that we love have the power to enslave us if they are not properly prioritized.
