Uncommon Leadership 501 Teaching Syllabus & Outline Teachers: Pastor of Biblical Soul Care Please Note: This teaching series represents material compiled from various sources outside of Biblical Soul Care, including members of the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors (ACBC); Association of Biblical Counselors (ABC); and Christian Counseling and Education Foundation (CCEF). Purpose: To equip and train key leaders and formal counselors at Harvest Bible Chapel to be competent to counsel at the corrective level of counseling so that the church can provide the right level of care at the right time to those who are hurting. 501 Part 1 (Core) Learning Objectives: At the end of this training, the 501 participant will be able to demonstrate:  Sufficient wisdom and knowledge to pass the BSC Theological and Counselors exam  Demonstrate an understanding and ability to effectively communicate the basic concepts, presuppositions and distinctive features of BSC including but not limited to BSC Philosophy, Vision, Mission, Core Values and key doctrines addressed in a biblical counseling framework  Ability to teach, counsel and illustrate by diagrams the “4 Hearts” along with the Fruit to Root Diagnostic and Developmental Life Circles  Will possess skills to help counselees identify motives, ruling idols, and patterns of thinking in their life that are flesh centered and how to repent, change and grow more like Christ  Develop a applied theological understanding of some of the most common advanced issues in counseling  A basic competency to counsel some of life’s most common and challenging issues: marriage, suffering, depression, addictions, anxieties, abuse, etc.  Display the spiritual leadership conduct & character qualities of 1 Tim 3:1-13 and exhibit the fruit of the Spirit in Gal 5:22-24 501 Part 2 (Practicum) Learning Objectives (BSC Formal Counselors only) Note: (experiential training for those seeking a full endorsement as a formal counselor at HBC): At the end of this experiential training, the BSC Apprentice will be able to demonstrate:  Ability to discern, assess and evaluate people and their problems in a distinctly biblical way; which will be confirmed through a successful completion of the BSC observation and supervision hours  Skills and gifting to lead a formal counseling case on their own; which include commitment and compliance to the BSC Policy, Procedures and Database Management system

Express Biblical Wisdom and Discernment within the BSC counseling framework (from beginning assessments to graduating cases to “suspending or ending” a case to calling on the elders for support) Pursue an enriched and maturing personal life and relationship with Christ. Biblical maturity in speaking the truth in love with discernment to the problem based on 1 Thess 5:14. Display the spiritual leadership conduct & character qualities of 1 Tim 3:1-13 and exhibit the fruit of the Spirit in Gal 5:22-24 Prepared to pursue an external biblical counseling certificate through ABC or ACBC or other elder endorsed training.

UL 501 Pre-requisites:  Watch the original 18 part DVD series Biblical Soul Care for the Local church (see BSC Admin for online username and password. Must be approved by Pastor of BSC).  Read Christ-Centered Biblical Counseling by James MacDonald  Read Instruments in the Redeemer’s Hands by Paul Tripp  Attend Uncommon Leadership 101, 201 and when offered 301 Required Reading: Uncommon Leadership 501 is like a graduate level counseling course and the required reading and projects will reflect a graduate level workload. Below is a list of required reading & assignments you will need to do in order to fully understand and appreciate Biblical Counseling in the local church. A Suggested Reading List is available for each session at the time of teaching. 501 Core Training Requirements: In order to successfully complete UL 501 Core, the participant should be prepared to meet the following expectations.  Attendance – to be eligible for the Certificate of Completion, one cannot miss more than 2 training sessions  Successful completion of an “Personal Improvement Project” (PIP)  Successful completion of quizzes and exams  Surveys – surveys will be given regularly throughout the training. In order to receive the certificate of completion, class participant will need to complete all surveys 501 Core “Personal Improvement Project”:  During Session 3, Counselor Tools Part 1, class participants will pick an area of their life where they want to change and grow.  The area of their life can either be an issue related to an ongoing struggle with sin and/or an issue related to an experience of significant suffering or trouble.  Class participants will chose which area they want to focus on and then submit a plan of action as to how they will counsel themselves biblically to address their issue of choice.  BSC Pastor and/or Lead NVC will work with each person on specific scriptures related to their issue and related readings to help each person work through their trial

Certificate of Completion and Endorsement:  After successful completion of UL 501 Core, the participant will receive a Certificate of Completion. This certificate does not endorse one to counsel at a formal level within the church. Rather it recognizes the hard work and diligent effort one puts for in attending this rigorous training opportunity.  After successful completion of UL 501 Practicum, the apprentice will be recognized as one competent to counsel at the corrective level of care and will receive a Certificate of Endorsement by the Elders of Harvest Bible Chapel and Dr. Garrett Higbee. Steps to become an Endorsed BSC counselor at HBC:  All of Part 1 (Core) and Part 2 (Practicum) of 501 1. 2. 3. 4.

Member in good standing of HBC Committed member of and regularly attend in a HBC small group Volunteer to be an advocate – done at any time (5 – 12 hours) Complete all BSC pre-requisites to 501 Core a. HBC 101 b. HBC 201 c. HBC 301 when offered d. BSC for the Local Church – 18 part dvd teaching series e. ITRH and CCBC 5. Successful completion of 501 Core training 6. Receive Certificate of Completion for successfully completing 501 Core 7. Complete Part 1 BSC Application 8. Observe a counseling case (10 – 15 hours) 9. Review BSC Policies & Procedures with BSC Staff or Lead NVC & sign agreeing to follow 10. Co-lead a counseling case w/ BSC staff or Lead NVC (15 – 20 hours) 11. Complete Part 2 BSC application (counselor/theological exams) 12. Lead counseling case while being observed by BSC staff or Lead NVC (15 – 20 hours) 13. Interview w/ BSC Executive Director and Pastor & Receive Certificate of Endorsement 14. Attend BSC Endorsement recognition dinner
