Thankempty Girl Gets Some Glasses Girl (in a thin, reedy, complaining voice): Ugh. What a horrible day. The first thing that happened today was a stubbed toe! I got up and banged it on my dresser. AND I had peanut butter and jelly for lunch. Ugh. The jelly soaked right through the bread. And now I have nothing to do. I’m bored and tired and grouchy. Ugh. What a horrible day. Mr. Gratitude (in a nice, hearty, booming voice): HEL-LO! What do we have here? Girl: Ah…it’s just me, bored and sad. Mr. G. (picking up the empty bag the girl is holding): Uh-oh. You do have problems. You are completely thankempty. Girl: Thankempty? Mr. G.: Your bag. See? It has nothing in it. You are thankempty…you haven’t thought of anything to be glad about. Girl: To be glad about? I don’t have anything to be glad about! I’m having a very miserable day! Mr. G.: OH! I see! You haven’t discovered your blessings! Girl: My blessings? Mr. G.: Yes! The many, many wonderful things Heavenly Father has given you. How happy you’ll be when you discover all your blessings. Girl: But I don’t see any blessings! All I see is a stubbed toe, and a yucky sandwich, and a boring afternoon. Mr. G.: Just a minute. I have the very thing to help you. (Rummages around in pocket or bag and finds glasses.) Here! These are gratitude glasses. They help you see lots of things that you’ve always had but just haven’t noticed. Girl: (puts on the glasses and looks around in astonishment) O—o---oh! Look! Look at ALL my blessings! (Bends over to pick up balloons on the ground). “What’s this one? I always have food to eat and I am never hungry.” That’s true! What a good one! Oh, and this one! “I can walk by myself.” That’s a good one! I like to be able to go wherever I want to go. How about this one? “I have time to play and have fun.” That’s true! I have time for that right now! (She has put all the balloons in her bag.) Look at my bag! It’s getting full! Mr. G: Yes—thankful! It’s so much better than being thankempty. Now you’ve started counting your blessings, don’t stop! Soon you’ll be so very FULL of thanks that you’ll discover you’ve gone from pretty sad to REALLY glad. Girl: Just LOOK at all of these blessings (starts to sing “I am Glad for Many Things)
