UF has claimed a school-record fourconsecutive bowls and will be making its eighth-consecutive January Bowl appearance, the longest active streak in the nation. In addition, the Gators will be appearing in a BCS Bowl for the seventh time, tops in the SEC and tied for the third-best total nationally. Florida’s total of five BCS Bowl wins is tied for the top total in the nation and with a victory it will have the top total in the nation in all-time BCS wins. UF will be making its 40th bowl appearance.

• The first meeting between these two teams came on Homecoming in 1980, when the Gators won 13-0. That was a tough season for the then-independent Cardinals, who faced Miami, Florida State and Florida that year. Louisville lost all three games. OCT. 24, 1992 (GAINESVILLE) FLORIDA 31, LOUISVILLE 17 • The second meeting between the schools came in 1992, again on Homecoming. In Steve Spurrier’s third season at Florida, he guided the Gators to a 31-17 win over Howard Schnellenberger’s Cardinals.

ill Muschamp, a 17-year coaching veteran, has 13 years of experience in the Southeastern Conference and spent a season with the Miami Dolphins as Assistant Head Coach for Defense. Not only did Muschamp, a highly-respected coach among both his peers and his players, bring collegiate and NFL experience back to Gainesville, he also brought a wealth of big-game experience. He has coached in two national championship games, winning the ultimate prize in 2003 while defensive coordinator at LSU, and coached in a third BCS bowl game following the 2008 season, when Texas won the Fiesta Bowl. In addition to his national championship past, Muschamp has coached in the SEC Championship Game twice and in the Big 12 Championship Game once, coming out on the winning side in each of those three contests. Muschamp has guided the Gators to an 11-1 performance in 2012, becoming the fifth team in school history to win 11 games in the regular season. UF won three games versus top-10 teams for the first time since 1997 and only the second time ever and defeated seven bowl eligible teams against the nation’s No. 1 schedule according to the NCAA. Muschamp directed the biggest regularseason turnaround for the Gator program in 32 years, improving by five victories. His first season in 2011 produced a 24-17 victory over Ohio State in the TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl, UF’s school-record fourth-straight bowl win. His first squad was one of the youngest in school history; 15 true freshmen and 52 underclassmen saw action – the secondmost in school history. In his six seasons as an SEC defensive coordinator, Muschamp’s defenses have ranked among the nation’s top 10 in total defense every year, while always maintaining a top-15 rating in scoring defense, including three times inside the top 10. In five of his nine seasons overall as a Division I defensive coordinator, the high-energy coach’s team has allowed under 100 yards rushing per game and has twice led the nation in rushing defense.

The 1994 graduate of the University of Georgia moved immediately into coaching following his collegiate career, working as a graduate assistant at Auburn from 1995-96, earning his master’s degree in 1996. He became a secondary coach at West Georgia (1998) and Eastern Kentucky (1999) before moving on to his first defensive coordinator position at Valdosta State for the 2000 season, where he helped the Blazers to a 10-2 record and the Gulf South Conference Championship with an 8-1 league mark. Muschamp served as defensive coordinator at LSU (2002-04; he was LSU’s linebackers coach in 2001) and Auburn (2006-07) and was a finalist for the 2007 Broyles Award as the nation’s top assistant coach. He was the coach-in-waiting and defensive coordinator at Texas from 2008-10 prior to his arrival in Gainesville. The son of a football coach, Muschamp turned down appointments at West Point and Annapolis to become a four-year letterman as a safety at Georgia from 1991-94, where he was voted defensive co-captain as a senior. In his playing career at UGA, he earned his way from walk-on to scholarship player by the spring of his redshirt freshman season and eventually was named co-captain for his senior season. He also earned a spot on SEC Academic Honor Roll in 1993. Muschamp and his wife, Carol, have two sons, Jackson and Whit.

CARTER’S CORNER The Allstate Sugar Bowl By Scott Carter, GatorZone.com Senior Writer

T

he first sign that the 2012 season was going to be different for the Gators came in the second game. Florida was at Texas A&M and trailed by 10 points at halftime. A halftime deficit meant only one thing in Will Muschamp’s first season: a loss. The Gators were 0-5 when trailing at the half under Muschamp and with eventual Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel guiding the Aggies up and down the field, the prospects looked grim for the Gators. But, this Gator team is different from the past two seasons when Florida transitioned from former coach Urban Meyer to Muschamp with a 15-11 record. The Gators quickly proved how different in the second half, shutting down Manziel after halftime in a 20-17 comeback win. The Gators won seven in a row to start the season before six turnovers cost them in a 17-9 loss to Georgia. However, the Gators quickly rebounded to win their final four regular-season games, including a 37-26 win at Florida State that included a 24-point fourth quarter to silence Doak Campbell Stadium. The Gators’ 11-1 record and No. 3 ranking in the BCS earned them a trip to the Sugar Bowl, where they will face former Florida assistant Charlie Strong and his 10-2 Louisville team. The last time Florida played in the Sugar Bowl in 2010; Strong was on UF’s sideline in his final game as the Gators’ defensive coordinator in a 51-24 win over Cincinnati. Florida’s comeback season didn’t happen by accident. The program has undergone a major transformation in two seasons under Muschamp, head-coach-in-waiting at Texas until Florida athletics

8

director Jeremy Foley convinced Muschamp to return to Gainesville, where he spent a decade growing up. The Gators are a team built around defense and toughness, much different from other Florida teams to play in the Sugar Bowl. When Florida won its first national title in 1996 with a 52-20 romp over Florida State in the ’97 Sugar Bowl, former coach Steve Spurrier’s Fun ‘N Gun offense dominated the headlines. When the Gators won two national titles under Meyer and Tim Tebow closed his career in Orange and Blue in the 2010 Sugar Bowl, Tebow and Meyer were the focal points for fans and media. These Gators are dirt-in-your-fingernails blue collar. Their offense is led by sophomore Jeff Driskel, who has proven to be an efficient game manager, and senior running back Mike Gillislee, a between-the-tackles runner who became Florida’s first back to eclipse 1,000 yards since 2004. When it comes to star power, most look first toward the defense. Safety Matt Elam earned first-team All-American honors from The Associated Press, and defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd and linebacker Jon Bostic also showed up on several postseason award lists. The kicking game has perhaps the best tandem in the country in placekicker Caleb Sturgis and punter Kyle Christy. Florida’s climb back toward the top of the national polls happened faster than many expected. They said this was supposed to be a rebuilding year, and that 2013 was the year the Gators might once again rise back to prominence. The Gators obviously didn’t listen.
