O ur Visio n Christ-centered, multigenerational, family and community relevant ministries through worship, discipleship, and mission.

O ur Missi on REA C H, T EA C H, and SEN D We REACH out to our congregation, community, and the world to TEACH the word of God as provided in the Holy Scripture, and SEND our members and missionaries to be witnesses to God’s grace and His promise of eternal life to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Wors hi p Services Break F re e Our Saturday evening service begins at 6:00pm in the Family Life Center. This transformational service involves modern music, multimedia, and a style of preaching that is practical and participatory. Traditions At 8:00 and 11:00am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00am service. Conn ect At 9:30am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns. Fre edom At 11:07am Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a non-traditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.

Philip’s Focus Around Shalimar As I write this week’s Focus, I would be remiss if I did not take time on behalf of the church to thank Steve Larson for serving as our Church Administrator. Steve has determined that his career goals are better aligned by returning to the business sector and will be pursuing opportunities in the area effective the end of June. We want to thank Steve for his contributions in such a short time. Our staff and I also want to thank Steve for this past year of serving with us. We will all miss Steve and wish him and his wife Renee all of God’s blessings and favor as they begin a new season and chapter of their lives. Thank you again, Steve, and our prayers and love go with you. SPR will be coordinating a search for a new Church Administrator in the coming days and will update our congregation as needed in this process. Please keep this search in your prayers and with the Larsons during this time of transition. As the temperature soars, we are grateful for all the good things summer brings. Our Discipleship Roadmap sermon series continues through July. If you would like to respond to discipleship through baptism or reaffirmation of baptism, we would like to invite you to the next beach baptism on July 13th at Beasley Park at 9:00 am. If you are interested in exploring your next step of discipleship, our Discover class can help on July 14th. Discover also teaches about how to become a member of Shalimar. If you are seeking fellowship and would like to get to know the people of Shalimar UMC, there is a great opportunity just ahead on July 14th called Sunday Night Live. Everyone is invited to come enjoy some ice cream! The event is planned by Fun-n- Fellowship and is for the whole church! Come and enjoy! Did I say ice cream! Our next Healing Service will be hosted on July 14th at 12:30 in the sanctuary. If you are in search of healing physically, emotionally, or spiritually, come allow others to pray for you. We will claim the promise of James 5:13-14 “Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.” The annual patriotic services are this coming Sunday at worship at 8:00 am, 9:30 am, and 11:00 am. Shalimar has a tradition of doing these special patriotic services so well and we look forward to what Dr. Brad Bradford, our chancel choir, orchestra, and worship arts volunteers have in store for us this year! I know it will be great!

May all in our congregation and community have a blessed and safe 4th of July! Our great nation is 243 years old this year! We are so grateful to all of you who serve, defend, and protect our freedom. Happy Birthday, America! Shalom, Philip

Preparing for the Next Disaster Hurricane Michael was a wake-up call for many people in our area. It was the first category 5 hurricane ever to hit the contiguous United States, and the devastation was enormous. Relief and rebuilding efforts continue in the Panama City area and will for years. In response to this, the Alabama-West Florida conference is engaged in new efforts to become better prepared to respond to such disasters. They have developed a new office for long-term recovery efforts led by Rev. Chris Ackerman as the Hurricane Michael Recovery Director and Tammy Tisher as the Assistant Director. Under their leadership, the gargantuan task before them is starting to gain momentum and show signs of progress. Most of the work, however, is being done on the district level. In our Pensacola District, the coordinator is Ron Toole, of Trinity UMC FWB. He has done an admirable job of gathering resources and specifying needs for each church that will be useful in the event of the next disaster. Our representative in this effort is Larry Lewellen who has had experience in disaster response and pays great attention to detail. We all owe a debt of gratitude to Larry for taking on this important task. If you would like to help in the disaster recovery efforts of our church, here are some things you can do:  Just ask! Larry Lewellen will be delighted to hear from you!  Involve your Sunday school class or small group. If your class would like to work together on a project, UMCOR is collecting cleaning kits, hygiene kits, and school kits to deliver. These are made up ahead of time and stored to allow for immediate response to a disaster. For a most updated list of supplies, go to this website: https://www.umcmission.org/umcor  Donate to UMCOR. Just write UMCOR on the memo line of your check. Or you can make a donation online on our website or at the kiosk located in the FLC. At the time of a disaster, we will make appeals for donation of specific items. Shalimar UMC won’t generally collect unless specific items are requested.

continued

 Join a work team. The conference is asking each church to send three teams a year to help with clean up and restoration. These teams usually go for five days straight. Shalimar UMC is planning to partner with Trinity UMC on this effort under Ron Toole’s leadership. If you would like to participate, please contact Larry Lewellen.  Become ERT certified. Early Response Training covers the basics of early disaster response, including roof tarping, cleaning out damaged homes, spiritual and emotional care, team protocols, and more. In some cases, only certified people will be allowed into an area when we first respond. If you are not already ERT certified, or if you need to be recertified, we are hosting a training day on August 17. Call the church office to register and bring a friend! You do not need to be a member. Hurricane Michael hit close to home, and many of us have seen first-hand the devastation and life interruption that happens. It is only a matter of time before we have another opportunity to help or be helped. Disaster preparedness is something we can all be involved in. Pastor Brian

Blessings for Children is an SUMC mission outreach to community families with children ages newborn through fifth grade. We have been operating since January 2019 out of the #10 2nd Street home behind the church, and we are open every Wednesday from noon to 3:30 p.m. Volunteers share God’s love and serve His children by providing clothing, personal care items, and school supplies. During the month of May, we were able to bless 41 children which brought the number of children served since our January opening to over 70. With your support, we have shared diapers, socks, underwear, t-shirts, toilet paper and other needed personal care items, along with school supplies. Every third Sunday of the month, you can bless the ministry and children by dropping any of these items in the narthex or Family Life Center lobby (a complete list of items can be found at sumc.io/blessings). We are happy to shop for the items for you if you would rather make a financial donation to the church (designate it for Blessings for Children). Through this ministry we are making a difference to these children and their families as we share God’s love, pray with them, invite them to participate in our church’s activities and provide real and needed help. Your prayers, your donations, and your gifts, are so appreciated, and we invite you to please stop by on Wednesday afternoons to see what God is doing through this ministry that you support! We would also welcome you as a volunteer!
