O ur Visio n Christ-centered, multigenerational, family and community relevant ministries through worship, discipleship, and mission.

O ur Missi on REA C H, T EA C H, and S EN D We REACH out to our congregation, community, and the world to TEACH the word of God as provided in the Holy Scripture, and SEND our members and missionaries to be witnesses to God’s grace and His promise of eternal life to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Wors hi p S ervices B reak F re e Our Saturday evening service begins at 6:00 pm in the Family Life Center. This transformational service involves modern music, multimedia, and a style of preaching that is practical and participatory. T raditions At 8:00 and 11:00 am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00 service. Conn ect At 9:30 Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns. Fre edom At 11:07 Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a non-traditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.

Philip’s Focus Excited About the Next Two Sermon Series Our next two sermon series will be from two of the great books of the Bible. First, we will begin a five part series from the Book of James. In August, our new series will teach our whole church the principles of early church that led to explosive growth right out of the Book of Acts. This new series will invite us to find our role in the body of Christ and challenge us all to share “deeds of shalom” to impact our world. In our world today, we need to anchor ourselves in the Biblical teachings so that we can be fully the church God wants us to be! The book of James teaches us about faith. We will learn about the faith to make it through trials. In addition, we will look at deeds confirming our faith. James teaches us about integrity saying we are not to be double minded or like one who looks in a mirror and forgets who they are as soon as they walk away. One of James’ most noted teachings is “faith without works in dead.” We will also explore the damage careless words and gossip can do to our faith. The tongue, James teaches, is like a match in a forest fire or a rudder on a ship. The tongue is a little member but it can do such damage. Our words can bring curse or blessing and James teaches us about faith leading us to building up not destroying through our words. We will learn about humility with the teaching, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” And we will learn about how faith and prayer work together. What a great series this will be! The Book of Acts has been called the fifth Gospel by Biblical scholars. The Book is written by the author of John’s Gospel. So Acts is considered a continuation of the Gospel of John. There are scholars who reference Acts as the Gospel of the Holy Spirit. It is also nicknamed the Gospel of the Church. The Book of Acts presents the best blueprint for being a church making disciples in the Bible. One day I sat down to read a few chapters in the Book of Acts. You want to know what happened? I just kept reading and read all 28 chapters in one setting. The stories about the church were so compelling and inspiring I could not put it down. In this upcoming series in August, we are going to the scriptures for our “game plan” to grow Shalimar United Methodist Church! We are going to invite everyone to just be themselves and find their role in the Body of Christ. This series will challenge everyone in the Church to be a witness/evangelist in our everyday life just being ourselves by deeds and not so much with words. We also are going to teach and learn about practical deeds that will impact our community and world which are the “deeds of shalom.” This series will also lift up the bright future game plan for growing our church! continued

continued

One final word, we are asking everyone in our congregation to commit to being in worship during the six weekends of this series from Acts. The series will be begin August 4th and continue through September 9th. Let’s plan to be in worship every weekend unless prevented! Shalom, Philip Dr. Philip McVay, Lead Pastor [email protected]

This Week’s Guide for Groups & Individuals The book of James is thought to have been written by James, the brother of Jesus. James didn't leave to start churches, so it is thought that he is writing his letter as encouragement to Christians everywhere to stay strong and not lose hope. Read James 1:1-8.  What images come to mind when you think of a wave?

How is it affected by the wind and the tide? How does that translate to us being affected by the world?

What do you think of when you hear "double-minded"?

Read James 1:9-18.  What do you think of when you read that God tests us?

What's the difference in test and temptation?

Read James 1:19-27.  When have you been slow to speak and slow to anger?

Are you quick to hear or quick to respond most often? What are the differences?

What do you think of when you read about the person who forgets what he looks like?

Prayer for the Week: Lord, teach me to be firmly grounded, not being pushed by the influences of the world. Allow me to listen to the words of others, not waiting for my opportunities to speak, but to really listen to them because I desire to know them and understand them. Keep my anger slow so that I can be quick to love and forgive. Help me see what tests and trials come my way, and when they differ from temptations. Increase my faith so that I may do your work.
