The club at the end of the street President A very warm welcome to all returning members and a special welcome for new members to season 2012-13. This season is all important with our 100th Birthday celebrations happening in January 2013. th

On the 11 August 2012 the season 2011-12 wrapped up for the Woonona club. This was the date of the SLSNSW Awards of Excellence in Sydney where we had a number of nominations in the running for NSW accolades. Congratulations on the following finalists: Phil Geary - Facilitator of the Year Gina Crick - Masters Athlete of the Year. Your club, Woonona, in the category of the “NSW Club of the Year” made the top four in the State, but where pipped at the post by Far North Coast branch club Ballina Lighthouse - congratulations. Thanks to everyone for last year and I look forward to an excellent season ahead with all officer and committee positions filled at the Annual General Meeting. Thank you to all members that took on a position. If you have any questions on any aspects of the club please don’t hesitate to give me a call. Peter Evert  0417664097

2012 Social Committee Helen Bow, Gabi Bow, Gail Evert, Tess Evert, Megan Tremain, Katie Bell, Stacey Paddon, Dan Meehan, Phil Clifford and Eon Chapman. The biggest event that we will be celebrating this year is Woonona SCLC’s 100th Anniversary. The plan is to hold a Family Fun Day on Sunday the 27th January and finish the day with a Black Tie Dinner that night. Please keep these dates free. The events are open to everyone and we hope to see all of you there to help celebrate. More details will follow in the next few months. Sunday SIPS is back! We are hoping to have our first SIPS at Woonona Bowling Club to play Barefoot Bowls. If you have never played lawn bowls then this is your chance! It is a lot of fun. Date to be confirmed.

on to one of the committee members you know. We have a great club with great members. Please get involved and have some fun with us.

House Committee The next major project for the House Committee is the Club extensions. At the end of the 2011/12 season we held a meeting for all members to discuss our plans. One of the reasons for the extension is that we have “outgrown” our club house. We need more storage space so that we can better serve the community. We would also like to enjoy our wonderful location more and put a deck on the eastern side of the club. We have met with Ryan Park who supports the project and has already written to Council on our behalf. The next step is for us to meet with Council to see how we can progress the project. This is going to be a huge project and we hope everyone gets behind this improvement to your facilities.

Grants and Sponsorship The Club has received notification that our application to ClubGrants was successful and we have been awarded $10,000 from the local Woonona-Bulli RSL club. This funding will go to replacing the All Terrain Vehicle. If any member knows of any sponsorship opportunities within our community please let me know. Helen Bow  0438662333.

Website & Publicity Update We are looking at updating our website, and would like all members to send us topical and interesting stories and photo’s to add to the site. With our 100 year celebrations coming up, we would love to see some old photo’s . We rely on members to inform us about what’s happening, so please let us know about competition results, stories & tales for our newsletter or website. Sandy, Brennan, Daniel  [email protected]

We have lots of other social ideas like Trivia Night; Poker Night; Race Day; Sand Dance and New Year’s Eve party. If you have an idea then please pass it To get your story in the next issue of black & white, email [email protected]

Boating Dates to remember

Welcome to season 2012/13. We are again entrusted to help members of the public to prevent serious injuries and drownings. I would like to thank all of the bronze candidates for volunteering to learn new skills, and encourage them to learn and revise as much as possible. Surf lifesaving and first aid skills are extremely useful whether you are on patrol or with your friends on and off the beach.

I expect to significantly improve my fitness by the start of the season on 23rd September and I encourage all members to work on their fitness too. To quote a certain Warrant Officer: “Physical fitness is critical to our confidence in our ability to complete a task, to our body’s ability to acclimatize to adverse weather, and to our ability to think clearly in stressful conditions.” If any member has any suggestions, preferences or queries about this season’s surf patrol, let me know.

Boat Captain Hey welcome back to last years’ rowers and a big welcome to those of you who have decided to participate in this endeavour. Again we look like having quite a large contingent of rowers in 2012-2013 so it is extremely important that we all keep open communication on all matters surf boat related. Potentially we could have the following crews in 2012-2013: U19 3 crews; U23M 2 crews; U23F 2 crews; Reserve Boat 1 Crew; Masters 2 crews; Open Women 1 Crew; Open Women/Female Masters 1 Crew; Yes that is 12 crews! We still need some female rowers for the Open Womens crew and the Open Womens/Masters crew. If you have any leads please let me know ASAP. We are currently working on training programs and will be doing the training roster again this year. We will be having Kangaroo Court on Sunday 19 August from lunchtime at surfclub. All last year and current year rowers need to attend to get information about the coming season. Not a lot of dates have been published as yet, but here is an indication of what carnivals we intend to be represented at. Those in bold are confirmed dates.

Competition Convenor Beach, Board and Ski competitions will commence in October 2012. The Sydney Water Series is a local surf carnival open to anyone who would like to compete in swim, board, running or even ski events. Juniors (up to age 14) events are held on the morning and Seniors (everyone else) are held in the afternoon. I would like to encourage you to consider representing Woonona Surf Club at these carnivals as it makes for more fun to have a bigger crowd – the club also gets points for every event entered. We are not after elite athletes just anyone who wants to have a go and get in the mix. See the juniors calendar for Carnival dates, if you are interested in competing, please contact me for entries. Junior Activities Chairperson With the assistance of a Junior Activities Committee (JAC), we’re taking a running start to an awesome year, we want the junior club focus to be on friendship and enjoyment through consistent quality and communication, and lots of social events, so we’ve started planning the year for you. A club is as active as it’s members, so we want everyone to contribute this year, all members (yes mum & dad too) will be recruited to join the camaraderie, cheer on the nip’s, and help all our events run smoothly. Please feel free to attend all the events in the calendar, talk to any of us to find out how you can contribute, and what’s going on. Aaron Dobner 0410213050

Training There will be training provided this year for age managers, event managers and competition managers. We’re planning a special patrol to do ‘just nippers days’ and junior competition volunteer officials. Beach, board and fitness training will be arranged soon, watch this space.

Youth Co-Ordinator Welcome back to the most crazy, fun-loving, and of course best looking people in the club- the Rookies obviously. This year is going to be so exciting, jam packed with more competitors, more training sessions, more certificates, and of course, more social events. We’re going to become the absolute best lifesavers we can be through the new Cadet Program, as well as provide fantastic water safety at our local nipper days and at other nipper carnivals. On top of this, we are going to improve our competition status, with male and female beach sprinters, board paddlers, swimmers and flag-goers. We also have three very experienced and professional trainers, who are going to help us to become great competitors, or even just to be better lifesavers. And let’s not forget about the social get-to-togethers! We have BBQs, movie nights, the sleepover, Bondi trip, Jamberoo, plus much more. Don’t forget- Nippers start on October 21st, I really need you all to be there!! Rookies, this is our year to show the club how awesome we all really are. So get excited! And get involved! Gabba 
