MISSIONS MINISTRY The book of James speaks about the need for our faith formation to be action oriented. James 2:15-17 says, “If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill,’ and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.” Our faith in Jesus is a never ending cycle of giving and receiving. Our journey of spiritual formation begins with our recognition and acceptance of the abundant love and grace of God. It is out of this love from God, specifically through Jesus Christ, that we are able to grasp the depth of God’s love and then begin to share that love with others. As we progress in our faith journey, we must look to the example of the ways Jesus lived his life of teaching, loving, healing, feeding and acting with compassion on all he encountered. This life of caring for the marginalized, the widows, the orphans, the sick and the oppressed may be fleshed out differently for each of us, but it is part of our faith that I believe must be part of sharing the Good News.

One of the greatest aspects that I love about the journey of faith is when we give and share God’s love with others we are always changed by the experience. We begin to see others through a new lens and maybe even see them as God sees them. As we travel this path the more we spend reading and contemplating the life and work of Jesus, the more we will be able to emulate those traits as well when we encounter others, and the more we will live out the call in James chapter 2 of our faith being alive with fruits of action. I look forward to the new ways Cynthia Insko will lead our congregation in Spiritual Formation as we seek to be more faithful and authentic followers of Jesus Christ.

On March 29th our Sanctuary Choir, along with a string orchestra from Eastern Kentucky University, will present Handel’s “The Messiah” during our morning worship service. I hope you will mark your calendars now and will invite others to join you. I hope you are finding the Lenten Devotional Guide written by our church members helpful as we continue our journey through Lent. I’m grateful for each of the writers, the readers, and those who were able to be present to record the hymns. If you have not been following the guide you can find it on our web site at www.fbcfrankfort.org. We still are in need of a couple of handbell ringers to join our ensemble. If you can read music and would be interested in joining, please let me know.

BUS DRIVERS NEEDED Our bus ministry is in need of a couple of drivers to drive our 15 passenger bus one Sunday per month. This entails picking up passengers before Sunday School and returning them home after worship. We have several members who depend on this ministry each week. If you would consider helping in this, please contact Tom Midkiff or Richard Summers for more details. You do not need a special license to operate this bus. It does require some time and patience. Prayerfully consider volunteering today.

Even though the weather was working against us, Bowling with Bob was a huge success! Thank you all who came to play or support those who came to play!

While the youth did not have the opportunity to lead us all into the Lenten season beginning on Ash Wednesday due to weather, they will have the honor to lead through the contemplation of Christ’s last hours at the Maundy Thursday service on April 2nd. I hope you will plan to attend.

When we made it through January without a lot of snow and bitter cold temperatures, I thought we might have a rather mild winter compared to last year. As the calendar rolled over to February, I began to breathe a sigh of relief, and then…well, you know. A ten-inch snow, single digit temperatures for daytime highs and sub-zero nights brought schools and businesses to a standstill. In times like these, I am even more grateful for the basic necessities of life. This kind of brutal weather tends to make us appreciate things we might otherwise take for granted. It also makes people better neighbors as they check on one another and offer to go to the store for each other. Good always comes from challenging situations. Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way to care and share. Spiritual Formation

Like Christ, we value love over hate, serving over being served, sacrifice over self-indulgence, truth over deception, justice over injustice, inclusion over exclusion, generosity over greed, humility over arrogance, forgiveness over revenge, healing over hurting and peace over war. Also like Jesus, we become passionate about confronting evil, righting wrong, lifting up the lowly, finding the forgotten, liberating the oppressed, healing the sick, feeding the hungry, comforting the grieving, loving the unlovely, encouraging people to achieve their potential, forgiving people who make mistakes, giving people a second chance, teaching people how to live peaceably with one another and inspiring people to build bridges of goodwill, understanding and reconciliation instead of walls of suspicion and hate.

These were the things Jesus did everywhere he went, and they are the same things God calls us to do. When we do, we truly reflect the heart and nature of God. Cynthia will be guiding us this year as we embark on this faith journey. Lift her up in prayer and take advantage of the opportunities she will offer for you to “love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and your neighbor as yourself.” I look forward to seeing you this weekend, whatever the weather is, as we learn more about becoming like Christ and ask God to help us live a life that truly reflects His heart and nature. Until Sunday, Bob
