As the Lenten season is coming upon us, it is important to understand what that means for us as Christians and as children of God. The Lenten season is our journey with Christ, the journey that takes him from life, to death, to resurrection. We journey with Jesus as he tries to understand his place in the world, as we try to understand our place in this world, and as we understand Christ after the resurrection. Ash Wednesday is the service that starts the Lenten season and this year Central Christian Church will be having multiple services, so that as many people that want can be a part of the season of Lent. Ash Wednesday has the theme of death and with it comes our understanding that we are mortal, that death is inevitable. “By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; you are dust, and to dust you shall return” (Gen. 3:19, NRSV). We do not know when it is that death will come and take us, but what we can do is prepare ourselves, make a connection with God, so that when death does come, we will be ready. It is how we prepare ourselves for the coming death and what we do with our lives in our time on earth that the Lenten season lets us understand. This is where the idea of repentance comes into play. In the New Testament (The Second Testament) the idea of repentance is one of reconnecting with God and the idea of changing one’s mind, coming to a new way of thinking. So as we travel this season of Lent, starting with Ash Wednesday, if you choose to engage in the tradition of giving something up for 40 days, that is great. But what I challenge all of us to do is to try not to just give anything up, but to add to ourselves by being more aware of our relationship with God. For when we meet God we will fully become aware of who God is, but before we meet God we need to be fully aware of who we are. This is the perfect time to understand ourselves and how our relationship with God has prepared us for our journey to death and then to resurrection. Have a wonderful Lenten season and a beautiful relationship with God. In Christ’s Love for All,
2016 Regional Assembly Central Christian Church has been asked to host the 2016 Regional Assembly, which will be held on October 7-9. We have graciously accepted this invitation. This is a wonderful honor for our church to host representatives from other Disciples of Christ congregations from the State of Missouri, as well as the General Minister and President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Sharon Watkins. With this honor comes many responsibilities and we are asking for any members to volunteer and help us, as well as the Region, plan and execute the Assembly. If you are willing to help out in this endeavor, please contact the church office at let us know. This will take many hands working together side-by-side to plan this event. With everyone’s help we can make this one of the best Assembly ever. Thank you in advance for your help and participation.
