Call

Official Publication of the Sunset Canyon Land Owner's Association

Letter from the SCLA President The 2010 year started at a fast pace for the Sunset Canyon Landowners Association. I welcome everyone to the 2010 SCLA membership, committees, and Board of Directors! This will prove to be a year of challenges and learning experiences. I thank you for the courage to volunteer and your commitment to the Sunset Canyon community, and welcome your input and enthusiasm. As a volunteer group we must keep in mind that each of us has a life outside of this community and association, and respect each other’s commitment to our families, friends, and professional lives. To recognize and value the privacy of the others and our neighbors, as well as support and give assistance when able, is what makes a community strong, valuable, and effective. With this in mind, the Board has set into play various new measures and habits that should prove to be helpful to the SCLA members, SC community and its volunteers. The first measure to mention is the formation of committees, dedicated to specific community priorities, chaired by dedicated members, supported by Board Officers, and needing additional help by SC neighbors. Please consider the following committees and select one to which you can volunteer your time and talent. Speak with the committee chairs for more information and meeting times. Contact details are listed on the SCLA website at www.sunsetcanyon. org/contact.html. All are welcomed! Copyright © 2010 Peel, Inc.

Infrastructure/Maintenance Committee Chairperson Gary Hale • Communications Committee Chairperson Phil Auldridge • Community Events Committee Chairperson Ben Fletcher • Welcoming & Membership Committee Chairperson Sandy Hale • Deeds (CC&Rs) Committee Chairperson Matthew Wilcox • Bylaws Committee Chairperson Michael McGown Second, the SCLA and its new Board are dedicated to open and clear communication. Therefore, the association’s website, www. SunsetCanyon.org, has been designated as the source for publishing, gathering, submitting, and requesting any and all Sunset Canyon community information. Please bookmark this site as it will be undergoing improvements and revisions throughout the year. Visit the website often to be informed about the SC community and the association, through its links on formal SC documents, building requirements, association membership, and calendar of events. Additionally, as you can see with this first issue of the 2010 Canyon Call, the Communications Committee has been at work implementing a new monthly community newsletter. The newsletter publishing and distribution has been (Continued on Page 3)

Canyon Call Special Member Meeting Called by the SCLA Board of Directors Date: May Board Meeting, Tues., 4 May 2010 Time: 7.30 PM Place: Sunset Canyon Baptist Church, 4000 E Hwy 290 Agenda: Member vote needed for the following two (2) motions, Motion #1: The SCLA Board is requesting that members approve an expenditure of an estimated $1000 to obtain a written legal interpretation on the official authority of the SCLA on issues such as, voluntary & mandatory memberships, construction reviews, and deed restrictions. The SCLA Architectural Review Committee voted unanimously that this is the most important issue to the committee. The Board agreed that this issue is very important and is asking for a vote from the members on this expenditure per Section 12.01 of the By-Laws of Sunset Canyon Landowners Association, which

require membership approval for expending funds on or incurring any obligations for legal or professional services. This legal opinion is to be used by the existing, and future Boards of Directors, to guide the Association in official matters. The Architectural Review Committee has obtained an estimate from lawyers who are members of the Community Associations Institute, a national organization that provides education, tools and resources to people who govern and manage homeowners associations. Motion #2: The SCLA Board is requesting that the members approve an expenditure of up to $2500 per year to purchase liability insurance to insure the Board of Directors and committee members against legal action taken due to their positions in the Sunset Canyon Landowners Association. This is a

maximum amount and could be significantly less ($1000) depending upon the legal opinion as described in Motion #1 above and the quantity of properties for which the Association has authority. The Board is currently bearing personal risk, for voluntary positions, to provide services to the landowners of the Sunset Canyon neighborhood in which most residents are not members.  This is a situation that must be resolved if a SCLA Board of Directors is to act successfully on behalf of its members. The Architectural Review Committee has obtained an estimate from insurance agencies who are members of the Community Associations Institute, a national organization that provides education, tools and resources to people who govern and manage homeowners associations.

Canyon Call Sunset Canyon Goes Digital   Almost 2 years ago, a free online forum was created to allow Sunset Canyon members to communicate with each other on matters of community interest.  The forum uses the popular “Google Group” platform, which restricts access to the forum to actual residents or property owners of Sunset Canyon.   Participation in the forum has been overwhelming, and membership has increased over 50% just since November of 2009.  The basic structure of the forum allows any SCLA resident to post a question or comment regarding any Sunset Canyon related issue.  The posting is then transmitted via email to every forum member who has opted to receive forum emails. As individual email accounts  and internet access become ubiquitous throughout our nation, our SCLA Google Group will become the de facto primary mode of communication within our neighborhood. If you are not already a SCLA Google Group member, you may join free by visiting the signup page on our website at:  www. SunsetCanyon.org/google. Sadly, a small number of current Google Group forum members

have chosen NOT to receive forum postings via email.  Perhaps there was initial concern that emails from forum postings would be overwhelming in number.  In fact, over the roughly 2year life of the group forum, member postings have averaged less than one per week.  If you are a SCLA Google Group member, but are not receiving emails from the forum, you are missing out on being informed about issues affecting our community, and are depriving yourself of the primary benefits of forum membership.  I would encourage those forum members who do not currently receive forum emails to reconsider their choice, sign in to the Google Group (see our website portal above), and “Edit my membership” to opt in for email distribution.  This selection can always be changed at a later date if you find the volume of emails to be overwhelming.   An even simpler way to begin receiving Google Group email distribution is to just shoot an email indicating your desire to me at: [email protected], and I will gladly make the change to your account on your behalf!
