The Season of Advent is upon us! Celebrate the start of this holy season with us on Christ the King Sunday, November 24 by decorating Advent wreaths in Martyrs Hall. We’ll have some decorating after the 8 o’clock service, and all classes will join together at the 10 o’clock Christian Formation hour for cider, hot chocolate, and family wreathmaking! We will provide some greenery, but please clip your own holly, magnolia, and other evergreens to add to the supply. Kits including foam ring, pins, and candles are available for purchase at $10 each. See you there!
1.1/2 c chopped nuts Combine flour, baking soda, and salt in a bowl. In a separate, large bowl, beat butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and vanilla extract until creamy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Gradually beat in flour mixture. Stir in morsels and nuts. Drop by rounded teaspoon onto ungreased baking sheets. Make them smaller as opposed to larger. Bake for 7 minutes! They may not look done, but they are (unless you made them too large.) They may still look too light, but they will cook a bit more after you take them out. If you like them chewy and moist, do it this way. Cool on baking sheets for 1-2 minutes; move to wire racks to cool completely. Lay parchment/wax paper between layers if you need to stack them to prevent sticking. Enjoy!

“Fifty Years Later: The State of Racism in America” You’re invited to join the Dean as he travels to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Cathedral in Jackson, Mississippi for this groundbreaking Episcopal forum on race relations sponsored by The Episcopal Church and the Episcopal Diocese of Mississippi. Forum panelists include Presiding Bishop Katherine Jefferts Schori, The Rt. Rev. Michael Curry, Ms. Myrlie Evers-Williams, The Honorable William F. Winter, and Ray Suarez. It’s quite natural and easy to be grateful for these blessings and gifts. But what about some of those places of gratefulness that may be a bit more unexpected? Recently I have found myself grateful for Dr. JoAnn O’Quin. She is reminding me that there can be gift in unexpected places, in places such as Alzheimer’s and dementia. There are many of us who have a family member or friend who is caring for someone navigating one of these diseases. Dr. JoAnn O’Quin, professor at University of Mississippi and author, has a beautiful and knowledgeable way of sharing how none of us are alone as we navigate these waters and all of us can love those with these diseases and support those in caregiving roles.
Joining us to help facilitate our local post-forum discussion will be Dr. Stephen Haynes, Professor of Religious Studies at Rhodes College and author of The Last Segregated Hour; Dr. Andre Johnson; and Dr. James L. Netters, Associate Professor of Rhetoric & Religion and African American Studies at Memphis Theological Seminary. This is an event that you won’t want to miss!

Meet Katie Ratton
A Word From Your Organist/Choirmaster As those of you who regularly read this column know, we’ve been in the midst of a campaign to raise funds for the absolutely beautiful Yamaha 9-foot concert grand piano currently sitting in our Cathedral nave. At the time of writing this article, we have raised almost the entire $40,800 to purchase this instrument outright! I want to thank all of you who have enthusiastically supported this endeavor with your kind words and incredible generosity. The funds raised for this piano came entirely from private, non-pledge donations and from designated funds at the Cathedral and is completely separate from our operating funds and expenses. I am incredibly thankful to have had the unqualified support of the clergy, Finance Committee, Cathedral Chapter, and from so many in the congregation to purchase this musical work of art that is already enhancing our Sunday morning worship experience. This is a 100-year investment in the music ministry of St. Mary’s, and with this instrument, we will finally have a piano that can fill the cavernous Cathedral space and that can be used to attract different talent for our thriving Music at St. Mary’s concert series. Finally, I would be remiss if I did not publicly recognize Jim Johnson. Jim is the individual who found this piano for us, was able to negotiate a dynamite price tag, and who was the driving force behind this entire campaign. Jim immediately recognized what a gift this would be for St. Mary’s, and we are incredibly grateful to him for his vision and steadfast support. Katie is a prosecutor at 201 Poplar and wife/mom to her husband Rob and three children, Sara Kate, Anna, and Gabe. Where did you grow up? I grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, go Cards. I went to college at the University of Kansas and eventually made it to law school at the University of Iowa where I met my husband, Rob, in torts class. What books or tv shows are you reading/watching right now? I'm reading Still Alice by Lisa Genova. It's a book about a psych professor at Harvard who has been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s. It sounds really depressing and horrible but it's actually pretty good and oddly uplifting. As for television, Rob and I are latecomers to Breaking Bad, so we are feverishly getting caught up and making our way through season 2. What makes you delighted in this moment? Delighted in this moment? The weather!!! Everything about fall is fantastic, from the leaves, to college football, to bourbon and red wine, to layering clothes, to snuggling under the covers, to the smell. Fall rocks. What do you like about St. Mary's? I love the vibe of St. Mary's. I love that my kids can be themselves and maybe even a little less than themselves at times and we are never kicked out or asked to leave. I love how St. Mary's not only "accepts everyone" but how "everyone" is really what defines St. Mary's.

Sunday, November 24, 2013, 7:00 p.m. Due to the late date arrival of the Pilgrims, coupled with a quick exodus of Rhodes students to final exams thereafter, this year’s annual Christmas at St. Mary’s will get us all in the Christmas spirit, just a little earlier than usual.

Any treasures you've found in Memphis? I suppose it would be hokey for me to say St. Mary's, but it's true. I also like Shelby Forest and Overton Park; the Levitt Shell, no doubt; WEVL has some good things going; the new HiTone on Cleveland seems to be a great thing now that they have early shows for us older people; and I have just been introduced to Wise Acre which I really liked a lot. I think that Memphis in and of itself may fast be becoming a treasure.
What are ways you feel God's presence and love in your life? I feel God's presence and love in my life through my kids On Sunday, November 24 at 7 pm, the Rhodes Choirs will perform and husband. I was clearly fond of my husband before we had their annual Christmas Concert at St. Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral. This kids, but seeing him with the kids makes me love him even more. 75-minute program features a variety of music of the season. The It's difficult to explain. And those three kids: God knew what was Rhodes Singers, Women’s Chorus, Men’s Chorus will be the featured up when those friends came into this world. It's a feeling of comensembles, with a special performance of BealeCanto, a professional plete and total gratitude for my family at times—while those times men’s vocal ensemble. James Harr, Mona Kreitner and William Skoog may be super brief, and at times far between,—followed by, well, are the conductors. maybe not so much gratitude, yet those glimpses are God for me.

►MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 17, AT 3 PM-SERVICE OF VESPERS AND ORGAN RECITAL: On Sunday, the 17th, at 3 pm, Scott Elsholz and Ty Legge of St. Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral will join forces at the 1950 Aeolian Skinner organ of Christ the King Lutheran Church, 5296 Park Avenue. The Vesper service will be abbreviated and will include a recital featuring Buxtehude, Schalk, Widor, Mendelssohn and Mozart for four hands and the infamous Toccata and Fugue in D minor of J. S. Bach. This event in memory of Ida Legge serves as a fund raiser for the CTK Music Fund. A reception given by Dr. Hubert Dellinger, Jr., will follow in Schrader Hall. Handicap accessible.
FLOWER MINISTRY AT ST. MARY’S CATHEDRAL
Each Sunday the Altar at St. Mary’s is graced with two beautiful arrangements donated by parishioners. There are several ways to donate to the Flower Ministry in memory of, in thanksgiving for, or in honor of loved ones. Suggested donations are: Altar Flowers $125, Branches and Greenery during Lent $75, Paschal Candle $75, Baptismal Font $150, and Bread, Wine and Candles $50. Suggested donation for Easter lilies/palms and Christmas poinsettias/greenery is $25. The Flower Ministry coordinates the donations and has a team to bundle and deliver the Altar Flowers each week to parishioners who cannot attend services. If you would like to donate to the Flower Ministry, please call Jan Morrell at 575-3258 or
