Bow Wow Express Holiday Festival 2nd Annual Bow Wow Express Holiday Festival Expected to Draw over 1200 People and Hundreds of Dogs. Family and dog-friendly event will provide holiday fun and raise money for the ADA’s Bow Wow Reading program for at risk readers. The Austin Dog Alliance will host the Bow Wow Express Holiday Festival on Sunday, December 18th from 1 – 4 pm at Milburn Park, 1901 Sunchase Blvd. in Cedar Park. The ADA suggests a $20 donation per family to participate in all the fun activities. The proceeds benefit Austin Dog Alliance’s Bow Wow Reading Dog program designed to help below grade level readers improve their skills. Austin Dog Alliance’s Bow Wow Reading Dog Program provides pet therapy teams to local schools and libraries. Teams are currently working with children in Round Rock ISD, Eanes ISD, Austin ISD, and Leander ISD and at the Pflugerville and Leander Libraries on a regular basis. The Holiday Festival will feature activities designed to be both fun and educational for families, including train rides, cookie and dog biscuit decorating, and carnival games. “Story Time with Bow Wow Reading Dogs is always a popular activity. The featured book this year is The Polar Express,” says Debi Krakar, Executive Director of the ADA. “We will also have vendor booths with gifts for dogs and dog-loving humans. Hot Chocolate, complete with whipped cream and sprinkles, will be served and photos with Santa will be available at an additional cost,” she adds. New this year is a costume contest for dogs and their handlers. Those wishing to participate are asked to donate $5 or bring a new dog leash or collar for ADA’s rescue dogs. The costume parade begins at 2:00pm. Prizes will be awarded in five different categories. Other fun activities include Christmas carols and ornament, snowflake and bow making. There promises to be something to please both human and canine members of the family. To learn more about the event, please contact Austin Dog Alliance at (512) 335-7100 or visit www.AustinDogAlliance.org. THE CHRONICLE COATS FOR KIDS As a recipient of a gift, have you ever turned around to immediately give a gift back to the giver? Many who have received coats for their children and grandchildren at the annual Coats For Kids distribution day have returned the same day to volunteer. They gave their gifts right back to the community‚ a circle of service truly indicative of a successful program. Coats for Kids is a program in its 25th year that provides warm winter coats each December to disadvantaged children and teenagers in Central Texas through a community-wide collection and distribution process. Each year, The Junior League of Austin, Jack Brown Cleaners, KASE 101 and KVUE partner with the community to ensure the children of Central Texas stay warm. On average, 30,000 coats are distributed per year with the help of over 2,600 community volunteers. So how can you participate? Donate a new or gently-used coat to your nearest Jack Brown Cleaners, organize a coat drive through many outlets in your community (schools, places of worship, offices, neighborhoods), volunteer during sorting days or distribution days or spread the word. FACTS • Distribution Day: Saturday, December 10th from 8AM - 3PM • Distribution Site: Palmer Events Center, 900 Barton Springs Road • Community Coat Drive: Monday, November 14th through Wednesday, December 7th.
