tests, but sensitivities may differ. M. W. Toussaint and co-workers ranked the sensitivities of five screening tests and five standard tests for 11 chemicals. The standard tests generally were more sensitive, as measured by LCr,Q or EC 50 values. Nevertheless, three of the screening tests had sensitivities similar to the standard tests. The Microtox, lettuce root elongation, and freshwater rotifer tests could be used in combination for predictive screening studies and at a cost comparable to a standard test. (Environ. Toxicol. WASTEWATER Bacterial corrosion Corrosion of concrete sewer pipes from microbial activity of Thiobacillus may result in environmental contamination and expensive repairs. N. A. Padival, J. S. Weiss, and R. G. Arnold isolated a natural competitor from a corroding sewer pipe and attempted to displace the slower growing Thiobacillus organisms and prevent corrosion. They conducted competition experiments in continuous-flow stirred-tank reactors using T. thiooxidans and T. neapolitanus as the low and neutral pH challenge organisms, respectively. They isolated as the competitor a yeast from a corroding sewer pipe with a pH < 3. Both the low pH and neutral pH systems were spiked with yeasts at lower concentrations than the challenge organism. Results indicated that the yeast displaced the corroding microbes under both nitrogenand carbon-limiting conditions. The study demonstrated the potential for biological corrosion control for concrete sewer pipe, but may not prove to be more cost effective than traditional control measures. (Water. Environ.
