The Day of Pentecost May 19, 2013 8:30, 9:45 & 11:00 a.m.

Pentecost is the festival that celebrates the gift of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the Christian church. In Acts Chapter Two, Jesus told the disciples to wait in the city where they would be clothed with power from on high. Fifty days after the Resurrection of Jesus, they were gathered in one place and they were praying. There the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples with a mighty wind and tongues of fire. They were filled with the Spirit and began to preach the good news in many languages.

FOREST GREEN

We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the Church. The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls women and men to all ministries of the Church. In a broken and fearful world, the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in Church and culture, to hear the voices of people long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God’s new heaven and new earth, praying, “Come, Lord Jesus!”

9:45 & 11:00 “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling”

Sung by the Sanctuary Choir with the Brass Ensemble, David Burrell, director This anthem has been placed in the choir library to the Glory of God and in memory of Felecia Miles by the Outreach Sunday School Class.

Wilberg

Love divine, all loves excelling, joy of heaven, to earth come down; fix in us thy humble dwelling; all thy faithful mercies crown! Jesus thou art all compassion, pure, unbounded love thou art; visit us with thy salvation; enter every trembling heart. Breathe, O breathe thy loving Spirit into every troubled breast! Let us all in thee inherit; let us find that second rest. Take away our bent to sinning; Alpha and Omega be; end of faith, as its beginning, set our hearts at liberty. Come, Almighty to deliver, let us all thy life receive; suddenly return and never, nevermore thy temples leave. Thee we would be always blessing, serve thee as thy hosts above, pray and praise thee without ceasing, glory in thy perfect love. Finish, then, thy new creation; pure and spotless let us be. Let us see thy great salvation perfectly restored in thee; changed from glory into glory, till in heaven we take our place, till we cast our crowns before thee, lost in wonder, love, and praise.

*The Doxology

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise God, all creatures here below! Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise God, the source of all our gifts! Praise Jesus Christ, whose power uplifts! Praise the Spirit, Holy Spirit! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

*The Scripture Reading

Acts 2:1-4 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.

The Silver Beaver Award

Scouting through First United Methodist Church (Pack 1, Troop 1, and Girl Scout Troop 12051) happens through the leadership of our Chartered Organization Representative Dale Greene. Dale has been involved in Scouting since his son Tom enrolled as a Tiger Cub 13 years ago and is responsible for integrating the outreach of Scouting in the life of the church. Two years ago he led the team to revive Pack 1 after decades of dormancy, and last year he brought Girl Scout Troop 12051 under our Scouting umbrella. In 2007, about a dozen families were involved in Scouting through the church. At present nearly 100 families are affiliated with the Scouting outreach! On May 3, the Northeast Georgia Council awarded the Silver Beaver Award to Dale. It is the highest honor that a council can bestow. Please join our troop committee in expressing congratulations to Dale, and let his example of service and leadership inspire all of us to higher levels of involvement in the great work of Scouting in our community.
